Has anyone noticed this?
I was watching AoT season 3 and I noticed none of the characters ever blink. After that I watched a few other anime from a few different studios and noticed that characters rarely (if ever) blink, sometimes you can see a characters eyes for a whole 30 seconds and they don't blink once.

To compare I looked at some western animation that I watched recently, the season finale of Adventure Time. And they blink at an almost weirdly normal rate, just as you would expect a person to, even if they are a monster or candy person or even if they only have tiny simple black dots for eyes.

Honestly now that I have noticed it I find it massively distracting.
Next time you guys watch an anime you should pay attention to if the characters ever blink, it will freak you out and you will never be able to watch anime the same way ever again.

I noticed.

Those bigger eyes of theirs must carry a lot of moisture

I don't get distracted by it since I'm occupied with reading subtitles. As for Adventure Time, that show is lovely, I love their facial expressions.

I've noticed this since I watched Hayate almost a decade ago, but I've scrapped the thought about it and just barely even care.

I actually went and watched some scenes from my favorite anime to see if characters blink naturally.
And 2/3 kinda do.
Watamote does most of the time
Panty & Stocking does most of the time
Little Witch Academia does sometimes, but a lot of the time characters don't blink.

It doesn't bother m, its unnecessary to worry about trivial things like that in anime

There is a scene from episode 15 of season III of Shana when there is a info dump and I remember thinking it was weird seeing these characters blinking almost non stop

It's also one of the steps to having bloodshot eyes. :P

Back around December & January, when I first got my PS4 Pro, I wasn't blinking while playing video games, and my eyes were bloodshot for weeks because of it.

And, that's why you aren't perfect ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Stop imitating anime characters...

It's not they don't blink, it's because they blink so fast that you can't see it. Try watching in slow motion next time.

Unfortunately this is the sad truth of anime...
But come on guys, a blink is like 3 frames of animation, are you saying they can't do that?

Animating blinking is dumb, and it would probably look weird for characters with such big eyes to be doing that on a regular basis

Yeah ok, I'll reinvent the Gregorian calendar and put everyone on metric time.
Then we can have 100 hours in a day.

if they blinked that means the animators would have to draw more frames etc etc,too much work

This, it may not seem much, but animating blinking constantly can take up a ton of editing time.

anime is not drawn in full animation or full 24 FPS anyway so they must have blink on those missing frames lol

Honestly, I don't care about it, it's useless. We can still enjoy an anime even without it so it's not a problem

Yeah?, and?...

Characters in anime frequently keep wearing the same outfit episode after episode, and nobody really blinks twice at it.

Female characters in anime almost never lose their hairstyle when their hair gets wet, and nobody closes their eyes and pretends it didn't happen.

Characters in anime that have cell phones never seem to have ringtones, the phones always vibrate, and nobody bats an eye about it.

Characters in anime frequently catch a cold just from being in the rain, and nobody gets all wide-eyed about it.

Characters in anime do a lot of things that aren't very true to reality. Anime is primarily animated fiction, so being true to reality and physics aren't often the top priorities.
What did you expect?

If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

That just isn't true, I have seen many anime series that have blinking characters, if you watch out for the blinking, you notice it on many series.

I know it doesn't apply to every anime but honestly it's most of them. I'm watching Cell's at Work, AoT season 3, Angels of Death, and BNHA season 3 at the moment and I've just finished watching Rolling Girls and Your Lie in April.
None of these shows have characters blink at a realistic rate.

It might be weirder if they actually blinked at normal rate, could be more distracting or it could be the same so why bother

I think the reason they don't blink is to save budget costs as you would have ot animate that as well.
