Was this thread made in protest of the "this is why I hate Isekai" thread?

Ah well, I'll bite regardless. Personally I'd have to say 'Overlord'. I love a series that isn't afraid to spend a lot of time world-building and showing PoVs from multiple different characters, but at the same time precisely connecting each and every character and event by a thread which connects at one point or another. The show being an Isekai is just a coincidence.

Konosuba.
It's easily the best one, because it subverts expectations you have for the genre.

The answer is always Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The original intention of the author was that Julian got transported from our world to the one of logh, but back then yaoi isekai didnt sell well so it got vetoed by the publisher.

Since this is just another listing thread, I'll say Sword Art Online. It gave a new life to isekai genre.

Easy, Spirited Away is the best isekai. Inuyasha is another good classic example. For more modern examples of good isekai, look to Bakemono no Ko or to Hataraku Maou as a great example of reverse-isekai. Modern isekai is almost categorically hot garbage with the exception of maybe KonoSuba because it's a parody of the hot garbage.

Edit: I almost forgot that Youjo Senki exists. It's pretty solid. And I guess Overlord is acceptable.

Juuni Kokuki is most probably the best among all the isekai I've watched so far. No game-like world, no harem, no cheat abilities, good plot, no fan-service and no pretty-looking tsunderes with a shit personality to ruin everything.

You can ignore this mainstream isekai trash and watch THE ORIGINAL isekai, Aura Battler Dunbine, which aired in 1983.

I don't get the hate for Re:Zero. We finally got an Isekai show where the MC is a flawed human being. The guy is constantly forced to face the consequences of his actions and faults and it largely realistic. Hell, I will never forget the slap in the face moment when Emiliya said 'The 'me' in your head must be amazing'. Which while not necessarily subtle was there to force the MC to realise that he's essentially in love with the Idea of what Emiliya represents instead of an actual person. Which helps him mature in a way where I don't see happen in anime that often. His pride was shattered and he was forced into character growth. Once again. Doesn't happens as often as it should. Its not some masterclass in writing but its a solid show in my opinion and I've yet to hear a valid narrative criticism of the show to straight up justify it being called awful.

This caught me off-guard too. Made me ponder over the way I had been seeing interpersonal relationships so far. Shit's good...but people are upset because the otaku-pandering waifu-bait whose name I can't remember (i jest) was given a tough position to be in, or given the 'cold' shoulder.

The show stands out because there's a good bit in the dialogues to chew on about and understand the POV of any said character.

Juuni Kokuki hands down
it's in its own league, but if you're looking for shit like re:zero then you're in for disappointment

it has an actually good MC and awesome worlbuilding, the new world is actually fantastic and not a generic waifu spawning shithole

there's also magic knight rayearth if you're into magical girls (and in general more shoujo feel anime) and Escaflowne for mecha fantasy isekai

Ugh, that makes sense knowing this community but its very disappointing. I would think the whole impaling him would be a perfect justification as to why on a subconscious level Subaru would struggle to be able to feel the same way about her, but hey what do I know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Log Horizon, by a landslide. Give it a try.

Eanki said:
Log Horizon is an anime with a worldbuilding prowess that had impressed me, and I'm weaned on the best of Western fantasy literature. If you know Brandon Sanderson's Three Laws of Magic, then all you have to know is that it understands and embraces that fully. It's Chekhov's Gun the Anime.

MMORPG-based isekai series have a distinct advantage over other isekai types: MMORPG mechanics allow for a pretty strong backbone in constructing a hard magic system. In fact, it’s one of the easiest ways of establishing a hard magic system, really.

Hard magic systems, as opposed to soft magic systems, have clearly defined rules so that the reader can understand and predict them, in accordance with Brandon Sanderson’s first of three laws of magic: “An author's ability to solve conflict with magic is directly proportional to how well the reader understands said magic.”

Log Horizon understands this, more than any other of the recent wave of isekai stories. And this is what enables the core strength of the series: interconnection. The author has a solid established system that he then gets to mix and match. He has established ingredients and then how he uses them determines his dish. And by god, he's making a lauriat. As per Sanderson's Third Law of Magic: "Expand on what you have already, before you add something new."

It is important to consider the effects that a magic will have on a world. If for example your magic can create food out of thin air, what will that cause, what will happen? How will it affect trade, politics, warfare, education and social norms? Asking these questions and working out what effects your magic system will add depth to your world.

And that is where the series shines the most. It's about payoffs to amazing little buildups that snowballed hard into importance. It's a series that continually expands on what it builds up and it doesn't end in just one payoff.

It's also an ever evolving world. It's not static, where discoveries are forgotten and the world is continually and forcefully stuck into one dynamic. No. Unique interaction of the game rules becoming reality slowly in multiple aspects, as well as character actions, shape and continually reshape the rules of the world.

And it's not done yet.
