My social skills aren't the best and the main things i search about happen to be anime, shitposting, politics and memes.
Well, at least i have enough common sense to know that it isn't a very good idea to talk with people about the first three, so i'm only left with one choice.

And well, here lies the problem: It's not like that what i watch is niche, but that i don't know how to explain the appeal of it to someone who isn't much into anime.
Last week on college this girl asked what was the last thing that i had watched, and i simply answered "Bokurano", but then she asked me to explain what it was about.

It was a bit tricky, knowing that because of the way Bokurano tells it's story, it's pretty difficult trying to explain it without spoiling the entire first cour. So i just gave some vague and bland answers like "Oh, it's about humanity" and then said that i didn't tell everything for the sake of simplicity, but at the same time she was googling that and answered me with "Yeah, i could notice that". I mean, how do i convince an outsider of a show whose poster is a bunch of kids in front of a giant robot?. In the end she just replied me with "Oh, it isn't very mainstream, is it? The last one i watched was OPM on Netflix some months ago"

And how could i explain to anyone the plot of stuff i'm watching this season without it sounding dumb? And even if i do, how can i make such person understand why i'm so hyped about it without i, myself, sounding dumb?

"Why do you care so much on what others think?"

Well, i don't, i go to college wearing indoor slippers and i was only reminded that it wasn't normal by that same girl.

Let your emotions explode. Even if my friends don't understand what I'm on about half the time, they respect the fact that I passionately enjoy what I do and do not give me a hard time about it. If you don't care about what others think then let away! You shouldn't let some girl stop you from expressing what you want to say. It's impossible to persuade a normie into watching anime through regular descriptions. If you sound boring they will probably think it's boring.

Going back and explaining the story of something just takes forever and it can be easy to get tied up on details. So I just don't bother doing as much, it'll almost invariably sound dumb by nature. If I'm telling my roommate about an anime I'm watching, I usually just say the basic premise of it and what it seems to focus on to make it cool to me. When I told him about Kaiji, I just said that it's a gambling anime, that it had a really cool knack for keeping tension going strong and had some cool tricks and twists up its sleeve. He tends to do the same with stuff that he watches or plays that I don't know about.

I usually just say anime is like cartoons for grownups, as Japan is not afraid to tackle darker, more mature subjects. Unlike these pansy-ass American cartoons.

lol. i'd probably leave off that last part unless it was obvious the person was trying to antagonize me.

Never give spoilers or detail anything, just be as superficial as possible.

Try something like this:

-> Hey bro, watching any anime lately?
-> Yes sir, just finished Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan 2, you should definitely check it out!
-> What is it about?
-> The MC has psychic powers and tries to avoid any unnecessary contact with humans, he also hides his powers from everybody and never use them for personal gain. It is really funny and the episodes are just 5 minutes long, you should give it a try.

you can talk about most anime like you would talk about any western tv shows etc just keep it simple and avoid the weirder animes then you should be fine.
I mean you can't expect to have a conversation about eromanga sensei being the savior of anime with an average person.

How about you put actual effort into your answers? Bokurano isn't a difficult title to explain to non-anime fans so you could have easily explained the premise at the very least. If you read the synopsis for Bokurano on a novel or western TV series the only noticeable trope grounded in anime conventions would be the mech, that's it. The series focuses more on drama and psychological elements than mecha so it's not as if the appeal would be totally lost on someone who isn't familiar with the ridiculous shit you can find in anime.

Explain the synopsis. If it is vague, just explain the prologue about in interesting way. If he keeps bugging you, tell him to watch himself. You don't need to spoonfeed him.

Watch news. You care about current issues as you may apply it into a class debate. It is a healthy way of promoting social awareness that current generation is lacking.

Regardless how poor your social skill in real life can be. Just muster up saying "I watch anime... well in short, a porn but y'know animated"

just that, and I'm probably sure that it'll end there.

Ok, I'm gonna be "That guy" right now...

Do "Normies" even exist?

Seriously, everyone....fucking EVERYONE is on the internet nowadays, and even if you're not a degenerate anime fan fapping to cartoons and shit, you're more than likely doing SOMETHING weird on the internet that others don't consider "normal".

Normies DO NOT exist anymore.

Since I just came from that Hachiman thread, I'll use Oregairu as an example how to explain an anime to a "normie".

"It's about a socially awkward kid in high school. Everyone gives him shit for being a huge edgelord but the dialogues are funny and the animation looks nice."

Can throw something out like that without sounding too much of a weeb.

Considering the way the plot is presented (Which is one of the cores aspects of the experience), you can't simply explain Bokurano whitout spoiling a full cour.

And let's remember that the fact they're kids in an "adult" setting is also an anime thing. May i remind you that no one wanted to fund Stranger Things before Netflix because they though such trope wouldn't work.

I'm supposing you were ironic.
If not: Yes, i watch news.
On the internet, though, miss me with the mainstream media.

Yup, they do.
You're just too focused on "The internet community" and forget that many people just use their phones to post photos and chat with friends.

> How do explain stuff i watch to normies without sounding incredibly dumb?
1) Use template words from reviews of self-important critics.
It's not "a fun story", it's "an epic story exploring themes of friendship and excessive violence".
Note: any story longer than 12 episodes is automatically "epic", any story shorter than 12 full-length episodes is "succinct".
Muggles would not understand you anyway, might as well look smart doing it. Smarter people would understand what you're doing, and appreciate your sense of humor when you're describing a comedy about pantyshots and tsunderes as "drama about interplay of sex and violence".
They will not watch it anyway, so why bother with accuracy?

2) Describing any good anime in detail is boring and/or incomprehensible. Keep it short.
The other person doesn't really need to hear about transforming robots, it's enough to tell that the anime is about sci-fi space battles.

3) Instead, tell the other person why you like that anime and/or what makes that anime stand out among the others.
Tell that it's a story of people's souls getting forged in the fire of war, tell how you appreciate the author's sense of humor, whatever. If you liked the anime, you probably know what to tell here.

4) The muggles aren't comfortable with their own sexuality. Otherwise, they would have been anime fans. Gloss over all parts that are sexual fanservice.
For example, you like "a heroine's character design", not the fact she doesn't wear a skirt.
Better yet, tell how you like her bravery and beautiful friendship and ignore the parts of the friendship that involve sleeping in the same bed and groping each other in the shower.
