US President Donald Trump has cancelled a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, blaming "tremendous anger and open hostility" from the North.

He said it was possible a meeting could still take place but warned North Korea against committing "foolish" acts.

The meeting would have discussed ways of denuclearising the Korean peninsula, building on a historic North-South Korea summit in April.

The "unexpected" decision, Pyongyang said, was "extremely regrettable".

In a statement released by the North's central news agency, Vice-Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said the country held Mr Trump's efforts to hold a summit "in high regards".

"We tell the United States once more that we are open to resolving problems at any time in any way," he said.

But even before the US president's announcement, doubts had emerged on both sides about whether the talks would take place.

Mr Trump's statement marks a fresh twist in the turbulent relationship between him and Mr Kim.

Last year saw the two exchange lurid insults and mutual threats of annihilation. This year though has seen warmer relations.

In the build up to the meeting, as a goodwill gesture, North Korea released three Americans it had in prison..

North Korea had also dismantled tunnels at its only nuclear test site only hours before Mr Trump's announcement.

A senior administration official later gave more details about the summit's cancellation, saying North Korea showed "a profound lack of good faith" in the run-up to the meeting.

There were a series of "broken promises" from Pyongyang, the official told reporters, including when the White House sent the deputy chief of staff to Singapore to meet North Korean diplomats ahead of the summit.

"The North Koreans didn't show up. They simply stood us up."

The official also said President Trump had "dictated every word" of the letter to Kim Jong-un after talking with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The meeting - in Singapore on 12 June - would have been the first time a sitting US president met a North Korean leader.

> TRUMP "TRIGGERED"

> NK still destroy their nuclear site infront of international jurnalist anyways
> Ready to talk to US anytime they want while proceed with the rest of observer

seems like north koreal will do nuclear disarmament with or without US.... Trump administration is just big ball pain in the ass to deal at this point because they demand too much and too forceful....

There will definitely be a part 2 to this. Whether it's a good or bad part 2, I can't say yet.

korea doing nuclear disarmament is a good thing and showing they actually willing to do so... it's the US side that become the bad side... is they really actually want "peaceful deal" or just simply want to enforce their soverignity by force out of NK? (which obviously will rejected, lUl)... i don't know what US expect... NK will doing it with or without US anyways... the problem if the US keep threating cornered rat...

North and USA relations don't go very well at all though. When Kim Jong-un bombs up the South and enslave the weakend South Koreans, then it will be the one Trump who can stop him from enslaving South Koreans and get rid of North for good.

north bombs is a bust, china is enraged because thier failure is dangerous towards china territory (and possibly small part of russia)... which even chinese goverment media like shinhua, peoples daily, and south chinese mounring post and russian goverment media liek sputnik and RT heavily criticze NK.... something you didn't see everyday... so if anything, the one who stop NK nuclear weapon developemtn is china and russia.... US is only worsening the tension... and infact, NK still destroy their neclear faculty without US involvement right before trump retreated... so US now pretty much is just 3rd party annoyence....

what war? north is desperate, cornered, facing failure, and lose it allies... south currently lead by goverment (moon jae-in) who use peaceful approach towards NK (unlike prevous park geun-hye)...

Prospects of U.S.-North Korea Summit brighten after Trump's Tweet

Prospects that the United States and North Korea would hold a summit brightened after U.S. President Donald Trump said late on Friday Washington was having “productive talks” with Pyongyang about reinstating the June 12 meeting in Singapore.

South Korean President met North Korea's Kim Jong Un Saturday: Seoul

South Korean President Moon Jae-in met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday to discuss Kim’s possible upcoming summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, the South said, the second inter-Korean summit in as many months.

Hilarious how so many Trumpets ate those compliments from South Korea up without a second thought, and Trump immediately shits on their comments by threatening to nuke North Korea. Haha beautiful.

Love how South Korea's Moon is still attempting to broker deals and negotiations in the benefit of the US even after the US fucked them over. Good shit from them, hope it all works out.
