How about you guys? For me, I don't watch anime when I'm feeling such negative emotions. There were times when I 'tried' to but I can't concentrate on the anime at all. There's this nagging awareness remaining inside me like "I didn't actually watch this anime" when I finished an episode. Are there more people out there like me?

Not at all really, to be frankly honest. I’ve watched anime in all kinds of different set of emotions, and I consider it a good thing since it tends to lighten my mood more often than not.
Of course, I pick out a suitable anime to watch firstly, for example watching a slice of life show when reality really hits hard.

Then again, it really depends on how negative the emotions are. If I’m enraged or something of the sort, I just do nothing, but if it’s a matter of depression, then for sure anime comes to mind first.

Ah, I can relate to this too, only if it’s a mild depressing case usually though.

Yeah, if it were me, I'd probably think to suicide if I watch a depressing show in an over-depression state xD

No.
I can't concentrate in anime if I'm feeling sad, but I do read manga when it happens.
For some reason I can concentrate reading, so it helps me a lot to distract myself.

No.

Hell, when I'm feeling angry/sad/depressed, I can barely concentrate on anything (be it TV shows, anime, hanging out with the boyfriend and our friends, work, et cetera).

Of course, like the person above me has said, it seems like I can concentrate while reading books? Be they manga or otherwise, so...

Maybe you two have better concentration. Reading manga didn't work for me. Not only manga, watching SoL, playing games or visual novels, and other anime-related things are out too. The only thing that worked for me is playing a match of Dota 2 but the anger/sadness/depression transform into frustration so I stopped that too. I can't sleep either when I'm in that state so the only thing I do is sitting like a rock and staring the wall until the emotion subsides ;_;

No, I can't bring myself to watch AND concentrate on an anime when I have strong negative emotions. I usually play a fast-paced game to get my mind off of what I'm feeling.

Don't like to watch anime when I'm angry, sport is better.

And when I have a really bad day, then I rather like to hang out with friends to cheer myself up.

You refer to use a fictional means to distance yourself from reality?
I do not know bro, the word entertainment and fiction do not tell me anything.

Watch a new anime? Probably not.

Rewatch a favorite anime? Yes. Since I already know I like it, and I know what happens, it's just a good time to enjoy all the things I love about the show and help me get in a better mood.

Sometimes, I watch anime according to my mood, for example when I'm "happy " I see animes of comedy or when I'm anxious, I see animes "Shounen " etc.

When I'm irritated I have problems with focusing on anything and try to watch funny vids from games on YT to cool down, I don't watch anime at times like that. When I'm sad, I'm just a little bit / somehow slower and sleepier for a certain amount of time. It doesn't differ from the usual me that much since I already have to deal with sleeping problems and so, it doesn't affect how I watch anime and what kind of anime I pick to watch.
I'm watching anime since 2012. I also play games, sometimes.

Don't bother me if you want to 'become friends' or things like that.
It's tiresome. I know you just want to collect some meaningless numbers.

That's the magic of this. I can access to a greater depression level with the help of some good anime. Well, in my case it's positive because my artistic talent is related to my mental health (Drugs is for the weak).

I do, and depending on what I watch, it can help change my mood by taking my mind off of whatever upset me earlier, or it can help let out that emotion vicariously.

Same with you OP. I've tried but the feelings get in the way of enjoyment. It's better for me to take a day's break off so hopefully, I'll be able to watch anime with a better mood next time. There are times when it worked a bit but I know it's not the full enjoyment that I can get.
