For curiosity's sake, what's the anime that you were so excited and hyped for but let you down the most after you completed it?

Mine would personally be Wolf Children (movie) and you can even say Violet Evergarden (anime). I have way more but I'll just use these as examples.

Nothing angers me more than Sword Art Online. A very promising premise ruined by horrible characters, no plot, etc.

One of them is definitely Dramatical Murder's anime. The Visual Novel was just so perfect, and the anime was so... WTF did they do??? Just... ugh.

In order to be disappointed, you need to be highly anticipated good things from the show from the beginning. So it has to be a series you like it alot initially, and it turns shit afterward.

In that case, Ancient Magus Bride and Kino's Journey 2017.

Also to a lesser extent, Dangan Ronpa 3 anime and No. 6.

Every episode I watched I could feel my hype slowly dying and turning into frustration.

Favorite genre; Slice of Life/Cute girls doing cute things/Moe
Favorite characters; Tsundere/Lolis/Flat-chested tsunderes voiced by Kugimiya Rie

Basically, most anime that rated 1 or 2 in my list
"People who don't see that anime has changed are either wearing "glasses" or watching only a certain type (and or era) of anime"
"Having a low mean score doesn't necessarily mean one doesn't enjoy anime. Rating system is not a school grading system."
"Elitist is people who think he is superior than others. Not necessarily ones who insulting/critisizing your favorite anime or people who enjoy a certain type of anime"
"Fanboy is people who translating "your favorite anime is shit" into "you are shit".
"Being a fanboy is an indication of elitism"

Isn't always about Subaru and Emilia ever since episode 1? Shuffle has that worse than Re:Zero.

Violet Evergarden.
I was so hyped when the teasers and PVs came out. It was beautiful but ended up being a disappointment.

I haven't seen a ton of anime, but mirai nikki was pretty disappointing. The last few diaries just felt so...lame. It felt like pretty lazy writing. Speaking of lazy writing I wasnt a fan of the out-of-left field plot device which gave it an underwhelming ending. When it started I thought it was going to be great, and I still enjoyed it, but it really fell apart about 2/3 of the way through

hmmmmm
hard to pick between Shingeki no Bahamut Virgin Soul and Legend of the Galactic Heroes since I was hyped watching both since I had watched the prequels to both and considered them really good
but LOTGH is much longer so I probably would say it was more disappoint as a whole I guess

Ehhhh? That's unusual coming from someone like you. But I will admit that the anime was really disappointing. Very slow beginning, and just as it builds up, the conclusion comes and you just sit there and say "What...THAT'S IT?"

Another anime I'll mention is Aldnoah.Zero. It looked promising in season 1...and then Season 2 happened...

Mine would probably be Absolute Duo.

I liked the premise, but when it got to the requisite "beach episode", I couldn't handle it and so dropped it.

Of course, there's also Diabolik Lovers More,Blood, Netsuzou TRap and Vampire Knight (the latter in which I may take another chance at, but we'll see).

Well for one thing, wrestling is too manly for me... I like sexy martial arts type fighting the most

Next, it was pretty much the exact same thing every episode... like... actually pretty much the same :/

Toji no Miko is another candidate.. it has many of my biggest fetishes but almost no fanservice, so its a gigantic buzzkill

Your Lie In April was a garbage not from the first ep but almost from the start so I guess it doesn't count and in that case I'll go with Gyakusatsu Kikan and Shisha no Teikoku.
Both of these movies started nice but as time passed, became worse and worse, it's not like they were completely bad though. The main issue I had with them were missing informations. The whole story in both of them would make more sense if they were TVs or whatever else with more screentime.
Not sure about Shisha but I talked about Gyakusatsu with someone and was told that novel did a lot better job at telling the story. Made me wonder why couldn't they edit the plot so that it suits the time they had to show it. Was it because of production costs? Bad directing?
Sometimes you gonna change the ending when it comes to adaptations, skip some events and stuff but what these 2 movies did was a real mess.

In the deepest, darkest part of a forest lived beautiful and strong beast princess. Beckoned by the moonlight, she wandered into a country of humans, and in the moonlit garden of a small castle, she fell in love with a prince. But the princess was a beast. She had ashen wings on her back. Not knowing what to do, she went to see a witch and said, "I want to live as a human. I want to be united with him". [...]

I had many disappointments watching anime. The latest one was Fate/Extra anime. The story is a mess, the fights ranged from bad to slightly above average (except the first one, who was legit cool) and the execution was a disaster. While not outright terrible, it wasn't what I expected at all.

Date a Live. It was more boring than expected and the visuals did not look like a 2013 anime.

Haven't really finished it but after seeing some, its definitely a dissapointment, especially as an anime directed by AKIYUKI SHINBO

Space Dandy. Was looking forward to it because Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo fame was involved in it, but it ended up being shit.

Psycho-Pass 2 is another one, since I enjoyed the first season, but the second season was underwhelming.

I also could not cry at all for either Clannad. It wasn't bad and After Story was pretty good but it also did disappoint me a bit.

I was a bit disappointed by it but not enough to ruin the series for me.
I think the anime that dissapointed me most was guilty crown I thought the art and soundtrack were amazing but the stroy was poor, especially the 2nd half. : (

Rewrite - I'm still wondering how can you so spectacularly botch such a promising anime.
Big Order - Let's say, I am huge fan of Mirai Nikki, so I was quite hyped.

Berserk 2016 - Not a big fan of Berserk, but watched the 1997 one, and i have a huge dissapointment on the animation.
Aho girl - i was looking for good Sugita Tomokazu's comedy, but instead i get a very annoying heroine.
Pupa - My friend told me, it has a very good PV, and...

Boku no Hero Academia. Everyone kept telling me how great and exciting it was. Went into with an open mind, couldn't be more boring and cliche. Alot left unexplained and poorly written. Don't know how something like that can ever be so popular.

Someone persuaded me to watch Akame Ga Kill with the premise that it had a Battle Royale atmosphere and deep sociopolitical critique. What I got instead was bad action fanfiction that 12-year old me would have written.

My most disappointing anime is Magical Girl Raising Project, it looked so promising with it being magical girls in a battle royal setting, but it all felt too rushed and ultimately I only enjoyed some of the kills. It didn't help that I watched it just after Madoka Magica (one of my favorites).

As for "mainstream" anime, that prize would go to:

Madoka magica.

It was boring and pretentious, the ending did help though.

Attack on Titan got me hard because I kinda jumped on the bandwagon back when season 1 was ongoing but I had not much expectations otherwise, "it's popular so it must be decent right". I hate how much potential it had and fucked it up.

But there's more disappointing still. I had high hopes and thought Psycho-Pass would be deep and thought-provoking. What the fuck did I watch? I need my time back but I can't. Why is it so popular? It's shit through and through. My no-drop policy made me stay until the final episode of season 1 and I had hopes that it would get better. It didn't.

Definitely Eden of the East. Solely because as I was watching I was actually considering it to be my potential favorite anime of all time, I loved it so much. But then the series ended and I said "Well okay, I still have 2 movies which will conclude everything for me and make this an easy top 5 all time, all I need is a decent ending."

And that never came in my opinion.
Problems that cannot be solved do not exist in this world.
