This show makes no sense

In ep 21 or 20 Edward has to make a Philosopher's Stone for the homunculus so they wouldn’t kill Alphonse. There reasoning for needing Edward was that homunculus can’t do alchemy. But they have the sewing life alchemist on there side who can also do alchemy. so why didn’t the sewing life alchemist just do the alchemy? most people would argue that you need to see truth to do the alchemy to make a philosopher stone, this is false as Doctor Marcoh creates a stone without having to see truth for the Ishvalen war. Others would say that Ed is more skilled. But, I’m not buying that Ed’s more skilled, he is a prodigy, but how skilled do you have to be to put your hands on a transmutation circle. sure he changed it a little. But according to lust they knew how to make a philosopher stone and they put the prisoners above it which kinda proves that they knew they needed two transmutation circles. The only logical conclusion I can think of is that the homunculus forgot how to draw the top circle correctly and couldn’t read doctor Marcoh’s handwriting. Knowing the brothers predicament and there willingness to regain their bodies, they would have to scattered breadcrumbs, hoping the brothers would know how to translate the books for them. The only problem with that theory is that they burned down the library which wouldn’t make sense. Wait why did they burn down the Library?!?!?!?
Perhaps I read something wrong, If anyone has an explanation that would be super.
