In all likelihood, the new anime project is going to be a movie.

An accurate adaption from Kyoani? Don't even think about it. The new project is most likely a movie to portray the after story. Gilbert will stay dead I assume.

Yeah, even if I want a remake, I don't think they'll make one. I've finally seen the last episode and it wasn't that bad. Of course I'm disappointed by how it's different from the novel, but at least the story is consistent. Some episodes were really moving, it has beautiful visuals and musics. And I'm curious about the new project.

I am a little disappointed at the last considering the level that episode 9 had; but already this, a nice ending and leaving the future OVA to close the series. The series in consideration I give an 8, since I liked seeing it every week.

Me decepciona un poco el final considerando el nivel que tuvo el episodio 9; pero ya esta, un final agradable y dejando el futuro OVA para cerrar la serie. La serie en consideración le doy un 8, ya que me gusto verla cada semana.

Nice shot. A few flat, not bad, but slow episodes in the middle. However, a great ending few episodes.

The one with the mother passing away and lawing behind 50 letters was beautiful.

The finale showed Violet's growth and was really nice. The whole show might have been slow and possibly, maybe drawn out. But I loved every second of it.

I'm reculantly giving it a 6/10.
It's visually outstanding but the story and episodes started to get really formulatic and predictable, which made the feelsy moments really bland.
I also think Violet as a character was pretty uninteresting for most of the time and sometimes even Mary Sue-ish.

Kyoani killed Gilbert, which was the entire point of the novels, but well.. they announced more VE work, so we can suffer some more.. great. 1/10

I don't think that's the entire point of the novel. It's not about the romance.

I believe it's more of the journey that Violet took to be able to feel emotion and to connect with people rather than staying as emotionless tool for killing.

What Gilbert truly wants is for her to be free and become normal.

Yes, it's heartbreaking that they didn't meet but we got the Light Novel for that.

The novel was more of other people's perspective about Violet so we didn't really saw 'much' of her growing up as a person (we didn't even see her cry that much like in the anime).
On the other hand the anime show her struggling more on learning new skills (being a doll), the novel just made her into a perfect doll from the get go.

I never said anything about romance.
And they could've showed us Violet crying and getting emotions without killing Gilbert off. Kyoani scriptwriters are just terrible at doing things. Why would they even change such a good novel and turn it into this garbage?

An excellent ending for an outstanding show. I hope that in her falter and blush at the end, she looked up and saw Gilbert. Maybe we'll know for certain some day.

There is always war somewhere in our world, and therefor there are always loved ones who are left behind, and veterans who are no longer whole. I think this show is something that might be of help to them, at least a little.

OK, so lets get this out of the way:

Is this show as good as everyone who hyped it said it would be? No.
Is it still worth a watch? Yes.

While the technical aspect is pretty much flawless, there are a lot of things I would change about the story. First of all, have some balls and kill the mayor for good. Have Violet find his corpse or something and make her move on. I really hoped she wouldn't cling onto that hope in the end, I really hoped that she would have moved on with her life, but I guess not.

Then again, it's understandable seeing what the mayor did for her. What isn't understandable to me is how the flying fuck a 13/14 year old girl gets into a battlefield and starts slaughtering batallions with only a knife. If she followed the mayor to the war out of loyalty, despite having no combat prowess, and then the mayor died trying to protect her because of that, she would be a more believable character.

Now moving to the good side of this show. Despite a dreadfully slow start, the second half is waaay better than the first. It has good stories, and my personal favourite is the one where the sick mother writes the letters for her future daughter to read after she dies. That was genuinely emotional even if some might say that it "tried too hard", and if I'm going to remember anything about this series, that story would be it. Also, while Violet doesn't have a believable background, I think that her development was handled nicely, despite her still believing that the mayor is alive.

So, what score does it get? Well, it would be a 5 or 6 if it wasn't for that one story and how beautiful visually the series is, and i think that those things deserve quite a bit of praise.

<confirms Gilbert is dead unlike in the LN
reeeeeeeeeee

13 episodes and over 4 hours wasted for an anime that can be explained like that: "This anime is about a robot chick getting to know her boss is dead " and nothing more. Side characters were more enjoyable than the main one.

Moral of the story? Dead people are dead.

After the misleading trailers/teasers, I'm sure everyone was expecting a huge anime, with epic fights as well, etc.

To be honest, the anime didn't live up to the hype it received during the teasers, but I'm not that disappointed.

The main story is a bit tricky, I'd say. The story, the climax itself was barely interesting. For me at least. I loved seeing how Violet kept growing up. It was an episodic series for most of the time, but we could see how all these episodes led up to Violet's maturity. I'd say the character development was much more interesting than the story itself. She learnt to live without orders, etc.

I was expecting more, but it was a good anime, nonetheless.

Very enjoyable show with a decent ending and spectacular animation as it’s highlight. A few episodes stand out over others as most told seperate stories but the majority were engaging. Wouldn’t call it a masterpiece but it certainly isn’t “trash” like some people are calling it.

Sobbing, I can't believe they ended it like that!!!! I LOVE IT and UGHHH Benedict in this epiSODEee😭❤️I don't think I've ever watched a single one without shedding at LEAST a couple tears. The OST is absolutely STUNNING and Violet's character development ripped my heart out and restored it again. Idk why everyone is being so harsh, this is a 12/10 for me.

I refuse to believe the Major is dead too lol I'm sitting eXtRa tight for the next season, hopefully we get some more time with Leon aswell!

A really impressive last episode. =)

The conclusion to the action on the train was intense, as Violet did well to dis-arm the bombs on the bridge. Same goes for Benedict too, for the only action I've seen him do at all in this show! XD

But this episode still had a lot of emotional punch though, as the meeting between Violet and Gilbert and Dietfried's mother went by on a sombre note.

The ending was really good too, as we hear a lot of the letters from the other characters, with Hodgins being one of my favourite letters being read out loud by Benedict. Violet's letter was still the best of the letters by far, which also had a strong emotional punch to the scene with her words and her expressions.

All in all, Violet Evergarden had a lot to live up to the rather ridiculously unrealistic hype placed on itself. Of course it wouldn't match it all the way, as the earlier episodes after the pilot episode was slow and uneventful at times. But the second half really got into its stride and never looked back. with episode 10 being the only episode that I'd consider to be of masterpiece quality.

Kyoto Animation continues to do an excellent job with the visuals and animation and praise must go to the soundtrack as well. Very well done. =)

9/10 is my final score and I look forward to the new project that KyoAni has for Violet Evergarden in the future.

Sigh - to much of KyoAni being.. themselves- and to much source material deviation for my taste; I always expect some (its hard to make a fully loyal adaption of most LNs or even mangas) But this almost might as well be another parallel universe. 7/10 some 'good feels' and 'good animation' But a poor adaption of the material in my humble opinion.

I don't hold to much hope for the special announcement to 'fix' any of the source material stuff; likely another client etc; but if the manga to actually do something right with the 'ova/special' might bump it up to a 7.5+

All in all a solid 7/10 show for me.

Adding Gilbert mother at the end with Dietfried's final "order" to Violet, and also them adding a bit of flying letters festival at the end was a nice touch! Violet's letter narration at the end was a nice melancholic end to the series, and to Violet saying one final "goodbye" to Gilbert. Looks like they are keeping Gilbert dead so far in the main TV series at least, which I think it is a good decision since they never alluded to it like the LN.

The show did drop its ball here and there with certain depictions of characters through its writing, visual design, or with the lack of explaining of certain events. Like how the heck is Benedict a freaking James Bond action hero all of a sudden in the finale? Kicking a bomb mid jump off a train on the bridge?!! Or Cattelya character design not matching her new persona for the anime? Or that they barely touch on how Violet met Dietfried, so Dietfried's initial animosity is never really fully unraveled to the viewers, so he just comes off as a dick to Violet instead?
However all in all the most important part to the whole series was conveyed well. A satisfying emotional tale of a young character dealing with grief and PTSD after a period of intense war, everything else was just supportive to this idea IMO. It touched upon how hard it is too adjust to civilian life that most shows don't really expand on for soldiers coming home from war. They really went all out with Violet development where they made me initially annoyed with Violet's beginning to fully empathizing with her by the end. (Which is the normal reaction I guess in hindsight to empathizing with people coming back from trauma, that failure/struggle to empathize and understand. Even getting annoyed sometimes?)

Animation was fantastic throughout, but I think I rather prefer simpler character designs with more expressive animation versus detailed designs with limited movements after experiencing Kyoto Animation go all out in the character designs. Film Composition did get tad annoying with the over-usage of depth of field effects, and the old photo film effect did make majority of the colors look desaturated and washed out then it should have intended.
The visual development artists definitely went all out for this series, since I was initially worried Kyoto Animation might not be able to do location designs outside of modern day Japan, but they nailed it. World building was fantastic not just visually, such as creating realistic but unique fantastic locations like the city of Leiden which combined Victorian and Mediterranean aesthetics, but also narratively with the nations of Flugel and Drossel, and its love letter tying with the peace effort after the war.

Looks like they are doing a sequel film/ova? Probably something similar to Kyokai no Kanata or Chuunibyou's sequel movie. Hope they don't drop the ball on that one. For me the series is finished, it wrapped up all major plot points and ended satisfyingly with no big loose ends. Only thing left I want them to depict is Violet's past with Dietfried and her initial life as a soldier before deployment. (barrack test please...)

uhm .. did you have to write down that spoiler ? .. ?? ? Maybe there's just one or the other person that was looking forward to reading the LN ... ......

The action was quite enjoyable, although them holding onto the bridge like that seemed rather unrealistic. I loved the anime from the beginning to the end, one of my favourite shows so far :D As in almost all of the episodes I was in tears at the end of them and especially seeing Violet finally having become a quote on quote "personality" that knows what feelings are just made me excessively happy :')
They really had me thinking that the person at the doorstep was Gilbert
but it turns out to not be him, I'm quite confident in that opinions since honestly, if it was for Gilbert, Violet would have exploded from happiness and not kept telling her sentence, she does have feelings after all, only that she is not quite sure of the why's and how's of them.

After that spectacular beginning I was hoping that this was going to be truly special. Alas, the almost overwhelming beauty of the art and animation was not matched by the story. Too much pathos porn at points and somewhat formulaic at others. The ending was well done though.

This.
Not for sure, but it gave us a chance that it could be him, although it could be also somebody dear to Violet, because now she can feel and express emotions normally, so it was a two meaning ending, which I really liked.

All in all, this show had some gem episodes, and some pretty average/boring ones, I think 7/10 would do it justice.

Aaaaaah I cannot express it in words how much I came to fall in love with this series. It feels a little empty now that we won't get a 14th episode after all and I'm not too fond of the idea of waiting until July to know of what didn't get to be aired. But I still feel like the show got a real conclusion to itself and I found the ending highly satisfying. The only thing I didn't like as much was the very unsatisfying cliffhanger in the end, but I have hopes for it being resolved in the 14th episode "special" in July.

But I couldn't ask for anything more of a near masterpiece. The concept in itself is really wonderful and right after I watched the ending I started looking after the novel itself to experience the story again from another perspective. Too bad it's not actually licensed in English. But the fact that it was KyoAni that animated the series just made the whole watching experience so much better with their out-of-this-world animation skills.

At this point, the whole series itself is definitely my current pick of "anime of the Year"

Disappointed.

_ The story is interesting but the way it is told wasn't.
_ Great visuals.
_ Not so likable MC who's voice always triggered me in the wrong manner.
Side characters with potential (Cattleya, Hodgins) but nothing came out of it. They just kept the focus on Violet but she was precisely the problem/weakness of the show. At least they managed to make some character development with Dietfried.
_ Some actions scene were great (the first ones) some other didn't make any sense realistically (the later ones).

This should have been an easy 9 or 10 for Kyoani and in the end I'm just disappointed. Wasted potential and I'll keep saying this director does shit (as far as my taste is concerned of course).

2 rand notes :

_ the highlight of this episode for me is when Violet was saying "i love you" but with such an inappropriate military vocabulary "Your orders means everything to me" and "I want to follow your orders (until the the end of the world or end of my life)" that even the sensitive Gilbert didn't understand her. I think that was truly beautiful and dramatic (for once).

_ all the novel readers not realizing they were spoiling parts of the story, even outside their spoiler buttons. Using your brain is hard. I didn't care much, so no problem. It made me smile :)

Best ending they could have done! I was really hoping that she would learn that Major Gilbert was still alive, but now that a new project has been announced there is still hope for that! This was an emotional journey that had me in tears every week! The stories of love, loss, and friendship were touching. Violet's growth from a tool for war to a beautiful young lady with some understanding of emotions was quite the journey! I loved this one and overall it was a 9/10 for me!

Violet Evergarden, it is a touching series and I'm curious to read da LN but it is beyond my reach for now.
I enjoyed the series a lot and there were of course there were quite a lot of tear-y moments; I was keeping my hopes up for Gilbert or the Major to show up at some point just for the fact that since they didn't find the body and reported for missing in action but assuming dead I hope that he would be alive but yet again to be realistic there are a lot of reasons for him not to be alive(he lost a lot of blood, might have survive but probably not enough to find sources to live, could have been found by someone, died for the explosion,...) I know that some reasons might not be plausible, even if its anime and theoretically anything is possible, but this series is leaning towards actual stuff that happened in the past. The ending is a beautiful finale, with the letters scattered,Violets massage flying then landing in a camp of violets.

About Dietfried I think it would have been much clearer if they would have shown also the past with him,why is he a jerk to Violet, cause leaving him like that without much information to why he's like that toward Violet makes him look like a straight up dick. But overall the series was amazing especially the arts, there were some really touching moments and the story line is kinda sad, but beautiful how the anime shows us different forms of love during the road of Violet from being a Robot /tool for others and who struggles with expressing feelings and understanding to being an auto memories doll who understands and feels all kind of overwhelming feelings.
