What age rating should Neon Genesis Evangelion have?

What rating should Evangelion really have?

I would consider some of the scenes in which EVAs shower blood R-rated—however, it's possible that these scenes are considered PG-13 because of the fact that it's robot gore.

Also, there are scenes with female nipples in the director's cut of the latter half of the series. Should we count the director's cut as being the true version of the show in the same way we count the home video versions of shows, and as such give it an R+ rating?

Even the official anime companies/departments that get paid to rate things aren't sure how to rate Evangelion—the show's ranged from a 12+ rating on one DVD collection to a TV-MA rating on Adult Swim.

I think an R-17+ would suit it best if you're not counting EoE.

I'm against ratings so I'll check the lowest one. Nobody should be spared from the realities of the outside world just to make childhood a kind of "bubble" (something childhoood isn't actually).
It was broadcasted on afternooons in France (and no watcher went in school to kill comrades...).

I think conforming to regular rating standards it would be R, but I personally think that it might be a good watch for some kids under 17. I think I would personally rate it 14+ ; There’s gore, but what teen hasn’t seen stuff like that before? The few and far between scenes with nudity, as well as the potentially distressing content (Asuka’s breakdown in ep 22 could give lots of people, disregarding age, nightmares) are more what made me choose 14 in the end. While it’s pretty clear that the nudity isn’t meant to be provocative, it may bother some younger viewers. And I think that lots of younger teens can benefit from seeing the show. Whatever your opinion on the series, it still stands that the character of Shinji Ikari is really good at capturing exactly what depression, isolation and and existential angst feel like. If viewers relate to Shinji, it makes the last two episodes that much more profound.

PG-13. It’s not that violent and it’s themes aren’t something only an older teen or adult would understand. A 13 year old would be fine with watching this.

R. It has sex scenes, IIRC.

I would say 13/14+ for the show itself, but the movie (EoE) is pretty traumatizing ans there are disturbing scenes so I would give it atleast a 16+ age rating.

PG-13. This is a good for 8th graders who want to take an intro to psychology class. It makes it seem way more interesting than it really is

Once you've taken that class, the end of this show is unwatchable
