| A bit tough to narrow it down. I have an odd condition that causes sounds to seem much louder to me than to most other people, so lots of things drive me nuts. Just a few: Many years ago I worked in the back room of a retail store. We had a compactor that would crush cardboard boxes and other recyclable stuff. But it was slightly out of whack, and every time we ran it, it would make a loud creaking and groaning sound almost identical to the alien tripod walkers in the most recent War of the Worlds movie. I used to work nights, so I got annoyed by a number of sounds that would wake me up during the day. The worst was the lawn mowing service. They use a very large commercial ride-on mower that sounded like a jet-powered helicopter landing outside my bedroom window. The county tests the tornado sirens on the first Wednesday of every month, beginning at 11:00 in the morning, which was right in the middle of my sleeping. Each set of sirens would be tested separately; so after about ten minutes, they would stop, and the next set would start. It takes about 40 minutes for all the sirens within earshot of my house to complete testing. |
