It's on my list to play, but probably will be a while, don't want to spoil the game.

i'd recommend playing the game. it's heavily story and character driven with 100+ hours of gameplay... i don't know how the anime will fit all of this within a series and i don't know if they'll miss important details, so just try out the game to give you an idea of what exactly is going on

hell yeah i personally consider p5 as a 'must play' game. there's a lot of grand things that this game gives and it really sucks you in just because of how intriguing and detailed it is! plus, there's a lot of heavy themes presented in the game are very much relevant in our society so thats pretty cool. story aside, it's an jrpg with turn-based combat so if you don't mind playing those then i think you'll end up liking the gameplay

If you have the time and are committed, I'd without a doubt play the game. First off, the game is a blast in terms of gameplay and story progression, also it goes into a lot of details with just about everything and I can guarantee that the anime will leave out a lot of stuff and will probably only cover the highlights. Secondly, the characters in the game are really great and relatable, you really get to know them well.

Persona 5 was my first Persona game and it was fantastic. And for a turn based JRPG, I'd say it stands as one of the best.

Just a forewarning though: I think most people finish the game in 100-120 hours. I was slower and took my time with the game, and I finished it in 180 hours. So just take that into consideration, this game is jam packed with content. It was completely worth every minute however.

As everyone has mentioned, you should play the game first to fully appreciate the anime. I imagine P5 anime to follow P4's style of sticking to the main plot without dwelling on Social Link stories. In P3 anime, non gamers may find it frustrating to watch because some details were skipped making some scenes confusing and they miss out references from the game. In the end, they're kinda spoiled for the game and still didn't enjoy the anime because they didn't understand what happened.

Because you say that, i recommend play the game before watch this anime.

I don't have PS4, so for this game i just followed walkthrough on youtube. But I played Persona 4 before in PS2 so i can followed gameplay and story of Persona 5. Until now i hope i can play Persona 5.

If you watch this anime before you ever persona game before, you will be confused by gameplay stuff like monster, battle etc.

Should I play 1-4 first. I don't have a PSP or Vita just PS1 and 4. Do I need to play those games to understand it, or is it like Final Fantasy where I can jump in pretty much anywhere I want?
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

No you don't need to play the others to understand P5. The main stories are not related to each other.

I'm a bit interested in how much of the story they'll include after the Casino Castle, since Atlus have restricted all gameplays and alike from that point on.

Most of the restrictions after the casino palace have been taken off Atlus has not really been too strict on it now.

The only thing you 'might' miss are some Persona 4 and 3 references (Like in the PV2, Rise, one of the main characters in P4, is seen on a billboard and you might see characters like Naoto or Yukiko or Chie on the TV as part as interviews, they are all main characters from the game) but it does not affect the story in any way, it is just an Easter egg.

Play the game first while waiting for the anime to finish, then if you want more Persona, bingewatch anime. The Persona animes don't do the games much justice to be honest, the games offer a much better experience. Just think about it for a second, Persona 5 is a 100 hours long JRPG, I doubt they'll manage to fit it in 25 episodes without cutting a decent amount of content. And Persona 5 is a game well worth playing, it's the best jrpg in the last 10 years.

For the story, you can watch it without play P1-P4 first for understand P5, yes it's like final fantasy that have different story on each edition.

But if you want try to play, just use PS2 emulator and play Persona 3 or Persona 4.

Definitely play it. Its one of the best JRPG games of the past decade and really superior to its competition (like FFXV..) Its a very story heavy game with great characters & fun addicting gameplay

no you don't.
there might be a few references to previous games that aren't really important
and the persona concept is similar

but outside of that it should be independent, a standalone series i think

Literally, just play P5 then decide to watch it, this series is merely a promotion for the game. I might try this series out however the game is an experience that u will never get from an anime.

Yes, i sound like those people who says just read/watch or play the source material to get the true experience.

In Gaming alot different people u transferring from an Active (Game) to Passive ( TV show) viewing of the series. However i mainly state this its those kind of JRPG that are so rare nowdays and literally just a great game

It's a 94/100 on MetalCritic and was the highest rated PS4 game of 2017.

Only if you want to. I’ll say this though, after playing the game and watching ep 1... The game was a much better experience.
