I'm glad it's back because I missed it. Lol! Nikaidou and Rei on the commentary are doing a great job.

while i don't care much about Saku, it really looks hard to be the oldest player, specially with all the "sashes" he got from others :o

I'm not sure who I want to root for more in this match, they both have excellent motivations.

Really one of the best episodes of the series so far. I loved the internal struggle of both characters as they both have weight on their shoulders. Really well done.

Sakura has to fight for the legacy of his old comrades. "I'm still burning"... I expect an amazing ending for the match next episode.

Amazing, amazing!
These last couple of episodes have all been that good, and I just keep getting impressed in how they keep coming out this good, while the arcs and focus keeps changing.

Haunting and deep, I dunno who to cheer to win the title here, wow.

That poster is so bad, lol. I love that Nikaidou and Kiriyama get as much room as the actual players of the match. Kiriyama describing the ovals as someone absent on school picture day is so spot on. The Chairman angrily saying they should have a nurse on standby and a machine measuring their heart rate was hilarious. That is quite the responsibility you need to bear, boys. I can imagine that being quite a demotivator before such an important match, seeing your opponent have such overwhelming support. "And with apologies to the old man, I'm going to end these reunions." B A D A S S. I love that burnt field imagery so much. Yanagihara remembering his past because of Kiriyama and Nikaidou arguing was cute. I never realized Yanagihara had such a depressing past. That's quite a load to bear. What an awful question to ask someone. Doesn't matter if it is right or wrong, you don't waltz up to the elderly and say "So when you lose eventually, are you going to retire then or nah?" That's a lot of pills he was taking. Shimada's teachers came to visit him! Why are Nikaidou and Kiriyama in a room like that? Weren't they supposed to be running the demo board? Wait, how did they get there? Wat? Looks like both of these players have a lot on the line for this match. I obviously want Shimada to win, but whoever wins clearly deserves it. The next episode is going to be great.

Ah this episode some perspective of the old man Saku, must have been a bit lonely growing old while comrades quit the competitive shogi world

Curious to see who is going to win, Saku earning his eternal status as Kishou or Shimada earning his first title after all his hard work

The poster is always hilarious lol they always bully Shimada hahahahaha and the 2 baby boy looks out of place in the poster hahaha

Chairman's suggestions is so funny! I'm laughing so hard (*´∀`)

Congratulations Saku, but I hope he retire already, he should rest and relax.. he's too old to be stressful. He played shogi for longest time.. it's better to end it while he has the title than having it steal to him.

This episode brings me back to the age old question, do you work to live or live to work? I don't know the full extent how the Japanese define work, but I know in the states, people work to live. We value our free time as much as we do work. A job doesn't define who we are. It does give meaning.

When Gan-san was layoff and then ask Saku how he would handle losing his A class standing it shows that work defines many in Japan. They don't seem to have the idea that time with family, friends, hobbies, etc. is also important. If I had been working for a job for x number of years as Gan-san did (I'm assuming at least 30 years), then a forced retirement should not be the end of his world. He could become a mentor, a teacher, join a club, even take a job (that will be below him) to let him be busy. Sounds like he considered this a death sentence.
Which one do you want? An Addiction or A Good Life?
A) Addiction - a progressive narrowing of the things that bring you pleasure.
B) A Good Life - a progressive expansion of the things that bring you pleasure and includes pleasure through motivation and hard work.

Rewatch here:

This episode really reminded me of Rakugo, especially its second season. One of my favorite 3-gatsu episodes without a doubt, I just love stuff like this!

Sakutarou's 'sash' scenes were really amazing, I'm starting to see the justification for the season's weighted score now as it's starting to lean towards a 9 for me. (although I still stand by the notion that season 1 is slightly lesser than what it's weighted score makes it out to be.)

This is by far one of my favorite episode of this series, the way Sangatsu no Lion can develop every single character on the screen in so few screentime is unbelievable. The way it shows the weight in Yanagihara's frail body, how he carry on his friends' desire to win is just WOW.

Honestly, I was bored out of my mind in this ep I don't really care about yanagihara and Nikaido. I used to care a bit more about shimada when he was one of the ones in the centre but now it's just boring. I want to see more Kyouko.

It’s hard to root for either of them since they both have their own burdens that they’ve been carrying for many years: Saku doesn’t want to relinquish the only title that he has managed to hold on to for over a decade, tying it back to the faith that others have put in him after their own dreams fell flat; Shimada wants to make his own village proud by finally winning a title for their sake while proving himself not to be a failure.
