| if you’re talking about most popular anime, it based on it’s member, it has 1,375,338 member as for now, tehcnically it’s the most popular anime in MAL (1.248.853 if you dont count PTW and Dropped) and keep counting. member dont meant anything though, but that’s how the system works. someone has to work their ass off to remove Death Note from number one spot, look at SnK, in just 5 years already number 2 |

| Probably because it's a show with an immediately interesting concept, compelling characters, thrilling plot, great visual design and direction, great soundtrack, and a good introduction to Japanese culture without relying on already established anime tropes which makes it accessible enough to people who have never consumed nor cared about Japanese media before. |

| Popularity doesn't equal quality, opportunity and accessibility are better indicators of popularity. If you look at the most popular shows most if not all of them had western TV (USA specifically)releases. As many said Death Note is easily approachable and quickly engaging anime that even people who don't like anime would watch. I have some doubts about its quality but I still rated it pretty high because of the sheer enjoyment and hype it achieves.
