Do you consider the use of "xD" as childish?

I've just used this classic emoji, that I hadn't been using for a lot of years, in another thread, without thinking that much, but now reading my own comment I was like "am I not looking childish when using this?" , "will others see me as a child having used it?", so I felt kinda uncomfortable, since generally that symbol well, is generally associated with a lighthearted, innocent and somewhat immature attitude, not something you would expect from a person over 20.

Do you think adults (18 or 21+) shouldn't be using it? That is something only expected to be used by under age people?

Of course not, as long as you don't over use it then I think it's a great way of expressing that you laughed.

I don't think that it is childish to express your emotions freely.
Emoticons make your statement more believable. :\

I don't like it.
I think using such faces in general is childish, unless it is not in excess.

do you think expressing yourself is childish?

Not in my book, and I'm 21! I still use it quite often, especially when chatting with my friends :) When you use it in every single sentence then it may come across as childish, but when used when you're sincerely chuckling or even just similing, it's totally fine!

That's sounds sad, why would someone slightly older suddenly change and not be able to feel innocent and lighhearted? These are both awesome qualities, I wish to have for the rest of my life! People don't suddenly become wise and mellow over night, just because they have to work, or whatever. If they do, that's just fake imo.

Personally I don't really care for those answers.

I was about to comment the same and agree, being lighthearted, serene, and innocent are all positive qualities.
Many adults would be a whole better if they didn't have the bad habit of tossing those away in an ashamed attempt to look more grown up. (which only results in making them shallow)

Immaturity is all an other matter, and mixing it with those positive qualities feels off. Immaturity has more to do with being insecure or being unwise, than being carefree.

KaiserNazrin said:

That's exactly the proper use of it, it's the same as saying "joking" or "jk"

Emotes exist to give a further tone to the text, since you can't really hear the voice or see the face or the body language of a person from their text alone.
And body language together with the tone of the voice are important parts of human communication, those can change the whole meaning of a sentence while keeping the words the same.
It's one of the many reasons why sarcasm doesn't translates well on pure text, because it relies on those other parts of communication which go past text alone.

To answer OP's first question:
Yes, xD is childish (which isn't the same as immature), and it's meant to give that light tone to the text.
Other uses is to show hilarity, same as "lol", but xD is more of a snicker or a grin, than a loud laugh like lol.

*Worrying* about appearing childish is in fact the main symptom of being on the edge of childhood and adulthood.

e.g. some animes or other shows are great for children, great for adults, but in between ... they'd make you *cringe*, because you're in that "wanting to appear as an adult" phase.

It's certain that nobody who's actually an adult will notice or care in the slightest which emoticons you use. Someone caring in the slightest that you used a "childish" xD emoticon would in fact be a giveaway that they themselves are insecure about their own "adult" status.

Emojis have little to do with emotional maturity unless you really do act like a child instead of just using it to liven up chat.
