Was thinking about dropping it until I saw all the comments saying Souichii is supposed to be a more black comedy story. It might be 1 or 2 episodes before I really decide. At least I can say the short at the end was pretty good

Agreed, it's very odd that they start with a comedic chapter.
But I'm glad that the anime series is 20min+ and including shorter stories as well.

Junji Ito is one of the best, so it will be interesting. Even though most of his material are kinda bad when it's not in his manga form. For example I own all the Tomei and Uzumaki live action films and well...

I read the manga and i hoped the toad didn't have to die in the anime.
It's a shame he had to die hahaha.

That dude is a creepy kid. More funny than "scary" or "horror", but kind of boring too.

Except for that doll thing at the end... now that was more like it.

This is literally reminds me of ghost stories. Can you imagine this as a dub? It would be on par with how hilarious ghost stories was. Souichi is ridiculous lol

Never dreamed that I'll see this freak of nature animated.

I'm pretty happy with that first episode! The episode convinced me that the style can work, and the doll story at the end reassured me that the studio can bring the scares. I really like the OP/ED, and can't wait to see what else makes it in. I really hope the ruler ladies apartment story makes it in...

I was expecting shit your pants scary, chilling and freaky, but this was neither scary nor funny. The only bits that creeped me out was a close up shot of Souichi's little spider, and the little girl doll monster at the end. The fact that Souichi's segment didn't have a payoff was disappointing. Also, the second segment had the potential to be scarier, but was only two flipping minutes! This show could benefit from just splitting the runtime of its two segments in half.

The opening and ending are really good, but apart from that this didn't really get me. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt tho, Junji Ito's works have a range, but I get the feeling an anime adaptation won't give his signature art style and penchant for psychological horror any justice. I'll give it a couple more episodes to see if any of his scarier stuff pops up, but if it doesn't pick up I'm going to have to give it a pass.

I'd expected horror, but the 1st episode turned out to be more "creepy". Souichi is such an annoying kid... cursing classmates for such trivial reasons. His voice acting also didn't help much.

I didn't like the idea of mixing the episodes. It's gonna be an anthology series, so precaping next episode is kind of pointless, though that horrific doll gave me real chills!

1st episode is 7.5/10 for me.

I've only read a very very very small amount of Ito Junji's work, probably like 3-5 oneshots that I've randomly come across at some point (one of them being the doll one featured at the end of the episode, totally forgotten I'd seen that and was surprised when I recognised it). I wasn't really expecting much for an anime adaptation but I was pleasantly surprised.
I really like the story telling and I was genuinely interested throughout the whole episode, the ongoing creepy atmosphere was really intriguing to me. The dark humour with Souichi was funny as shit too.

I didn't think I'd be excited to see more but I really am, and I'm excited to see more horror focused stories. I also wouldn't be mad if Souichi reappeared with that comical life of his.

Hilarious episode. Looks like the next story will focus more on horror.

The old man and all his “YER MESSING WITH MY GODDAMN CEDAR TREES!” got me good for some reason.

This is a pure garbage. This show feels more like bad compedy show not a horror show

I did like ousama game from last season. Evil or live was ok.

But I probably drop this one if does not get better next episode

Pretty good episode imo I can see why a lot of people dislike it though since Ito's portrayal of horror is kinda different from the conventional meaning of it. Lol Shouchi this episode was really creepy and funny. Looking forward for more

Enjoyed, but not as much as I was hoping too.. I'm quite the scaredy cat (spent three days with no sleep after Amigara Fault), so what I thought was that I'd get no sleep after one of these episodes... going by Souichi's story, it's not going to make me lose sleep, but will give me a creepy vibe and enjoyable time.

Though, that doll segment? I might not sleep today after all

Not what I was expecting but kind of what I was expecting. I expected it would be better but I couldn't think of any way to make it better. It just somehow works for this manga collection. Oh well. Anyhow, it's entertaining to watch Souichi get his ass handed to him.

I didn't like it. It's not a good episode to start and get people into the series, and even worse when they actually tried to fit another story by the end.

At this point, I think Junji Ito is cursed, but I'm still going to watch this through. I really wish they are going to choose better stories, it's not like you have to fish them, they're everywhere.

Little edit: I like Souichi but there are much better stories of him to start. This one looked cheap.

Well this was way funnier than i expected. Came for creepiness, will stay for humor (though the end with the doll was really creepy). I enjoyed it but at the same time i don't want this adaptation to make the manga seem like a laughingstock (i haven't read it yet).
What manga are you talking about? This anime is collection of some of his works. So it's not just one whole series that it's following.

I honestly liked how Studio Deen tried to bring the feels of Ito-sensei's manga into the anime. I love how its animated, but the first episode is more of like a comedy which is kinda lame for the first episode. Should have started with the Enigma of Amigara Fault which will lasts for two or more episodes. Idk the first episode should be the bringer of the BAM! Hahaha.

4/5.

I hope this will be 2-cour; it will be extremely lame if this will only have 12 episodes.

I'm a fan of Junji's works and I liked it. Souichi's antics are far from the creepiest things he's put out and it's too soon to write the series off.

Now that "A Doll's Hellish Burial" short made me pause for a minute. I love how bizarre the manga shot is and it was a nice surprise seeing it animated.

I'm not really familiar with Junji Ito's works but I thought they fcked the story at first lol, since it was so lighthearted for Junji Ito manga, that Doll chapter tho... yep, definietly Junji ito alright

I wonder if they will animate Spiral chapter. That'll be my nightmare animated

As I thought the voice acting was not good, Souichi sounds like a retard not a creepy guy. The inflection in his voice is all over the place, the side characters are similarly bad actors unable to convey any emotion in their voice.

Wonder why they decided to adapt this story first as it is essentially a gag manga, the next episode will either be a 180 and be terrifying or another one of the lighter works with 3 minutes dedicated at the end to cram in another one shot. I'm hoping that this anime can strike fear into me and not out of a jump scare. But maybe anime isnt the medium for that, certainly not with this fucking horrendous acting.

Out of all of Ito Junji, they just have to choose my least favorite story for the first episode. The adaptation is pretty bare bone too. It's just a moving manga, panel to panel, without any attempt to make it works as an animation.

I loved this episode! Great adaptation of a great story. Unfortunately, I feel the choice of adapting "Souichi's Convenient Curse" as the first episode will turn people off, especially those who haven't read Junji Ito's work and have only heard about his creepier stories; Souichi's character is more funny than scary, and in turn that's the vibe this episode had: more funny than scary. Hopefully the next episode will focus on a story with a more serious tone to win people back, because this anime has SO much potential!

AS fare as what they could've adapted first this wasn't all that exciting. But it was a good way to ease into Junji Ito's catalogue

I honestly didn't really like the first episode. It just seemed dull and boring most of the time even though souichi is my favorite junji ito character. I guess I was expecting them to change a lot more than they did in order to give the usual eerie feeling to anime that we're always familiar with while reading the manga. That's being said the preview of the 2nd episode seemed good so I'm not giving up just yet

It was an okey first ep, pretty entertaining. Maybe a little dissapointing since I was hoping for it to be scary.
Also, Souichi's voice seems a bit off, but I guess that's just what happens when you get used to a manga character.

~Loved the ending.
