Start of the ep was awkwardly paced but that Phoenix scene really was amazing. Judging from the OP, I had previously thought that she would die and be resurrected as a Phoenix, 10/10 did not expect.

Damn, Lindel's singing is so good.
Chise finally has her wand and she uses it right away to turn into a phoenix and the whole flight scene was so beautiful and the op being used made it seem more epic.

I really like how Chise being a phoenix ties in with her problems, and the foreshadowing of it. A phoenix rises from its own ashes, stronger than before - but it has to die first (literally, emotionally or metaphorically, with the preview's tears signifying a lot of sadness to come), so having a phoenix as totem animal seems to indicate a lot of future suffering before things can get beter.

The faeries helping ties in nicely with the distinctions between sorcerers and mages: sorcerers bend reality to their will (which is often crude, inefficient and bad for reality, is the inplication), while mages ask the fae to have reality bend for them. Four fire fae spontaneously and voluntarily helping Chise because she's just that good of a person can mean that she stands to become very powerful indeed.
"Though mountains crack, and ice will thaw

Though walls will fall, to tooth and claw

Though stars will fade, and shadow spread

On the heights we stood, with iron red.

And as they died, they killed the dead.

Thanks a lot for reminding. I know this is completely unrelated, but is it the same case for 3-gatsu no lion season 2

Just finished marathoning episodes 7-12. Definitely a better way to watch, it's unsatisfying to only see 20 minutes at a time.

Nevin is the coolest dragon ever. It's really hard to write a "good advice" scene, but this anime did it.

Extended OP over the firebird scene was ... er... "lit". Looking forward to cour 2.
...but then again, I unironically like Warau Salesman.

Seems like Chise's parents could see the creatures too, and she has/had a younger sibling?
I'm glad to see she had at least some happy moments as a child.

Dayum, Chise was looking hot in the second half of the episode, I really like the fact that they incorporated the full op instead of TV version when Chise was flying that scene was absolutely fantastic. Besides that Chise's family were looking nice and friendly and I assume that they were both magicians scene they did say they can see the black thing.
Heckle was here...

man, i knew the phoenix chise scene would be beautiful, but i was still caught off guard by how dang magical it was! i've always felt that one of studio wit's major pros was it's animation since watching the first episode of attack on titan and they do not disappoint with the ancient magus' bride.

i also see that studio wit is taking a page from studio trigger with the opening playing during the hype scene of the final episode (of the cour), which is a very good thing. XD

What Nevin said about Chise's mother became pretty relevant in the manga recently, there's a lot more to her family and we just got more questions and mysteries introduced regarding them.
I was thinking about that as well. I'm glad they finally went into some detail about what happened to them. Still in the shadows but with due time.

Also what a beautifully relaxing episode with the characters and soundtrack. Really liked it :)

Oh damn, this episode made me so happy!

And the whole phoenix scene with the second part of the OP was beautiful- now I know where it came from in the OP.

It was also really interesting to see Chise being happy as a kid with both of her parents. And wow, her mother was pregnant with another kid? I definitely want to see what happened there and also the details of what happened with her dad.

Chise flying home was so beautiful I was crying the entire sequence. She was reborn at last and has finally found her freedom after all the darkness of her "curse". Plus her new wand is gorgeous! Those gems for the eyes and the beautiful red from her hair omg

A beautiful way to wrap up the 1st cour, and I can't wait for the rest.

That dream was surprising though. She finally remembers some good times with her parents (thanks to her newfound lease on life), and... SHE WAS AN OLDER SISTER? :O

Does she have a sister then? And was a child born death the reason the marriage of her parents crumbled and her mother taking her life?
I wonder is Chise ability was the reason of child death...

Anyway, they really didn't have to repeat the song two episode after each other but the flight of the phoenix was great and her return too. If only that out-of-place chibi scene didn't destroyed the atmosphere.

Really great episode. Honestly, I would be even okay if they ended here, it was good conclusion of the first main arc and it would serve manga well.

The second cour better be good then.

"To value oneself so little, as though one were disposable, is to say that those of us they've saved are just as worthless."

A powerful message.

I was considering dropping this, but this episode was genuinely delightful -- full of resolutions, character growth, heartwarming moments, and several doses of beauty and kawaii. Phoenix Chise was amazing.

After this episode, I can't help but continue it for now.

I absolutely adore Lindel's singing. It's beautiful and angelic <333333

Phoenix Chise was STUNNING.

Fainting Chise grabbing onto Elias' hand tighter-- KAWAII~~~~~ xD
Says she can't wait to tell him something. Wakes up 2 days later and still hasn't told him anything lmao. I guess these things take time, haha. But Nevin's advice on her expressing herself sooner should do her some good ^-^

I like how simple joys are highlighted in animes, like a delicious meal or breakfast :') it's very nostalgic and warming.

As before, even here the narrative focuses on the relationship between Elias and Chise, seen by both characters; a great thing, which makes the plot even more interesting. Now we move on to a new narrative arc, at least from what we see in the previews of the next episode.

Well, I suppose as well it's because he's not technically a dog or a human, but a fairy who can take on either form.

Chise gains a bit of confidence and goes full Phoenix, She seems like a handful. But yeah I agree with her. Sometimes when you realize what you have.. things just seem way better. Rather than thinking of things you don't have.. and the dark past.

I sat there smiling, waiting for the inevitable gut punch... and then nothing happened.

Things are going too well and I’m scared. Especially with how much they’ve been building up Chise having a place she can call home, and how much she wants to say to Elias. Something’s going to tear this apart real soon.

...of course I’m perfectly fine if nothing bad ever happens to my baby girl Chise ever again...

I still don’t completely trust Elias; he’s still shrouded in mystery and I can’t help but feel like there’s something big about Chise and his plans for her that he’s hiding.

I’m gonna miss the OP/ED; they’re so fitting and beautifully somber. Especially the ED — I think that one is going in my all time favourites. The soundtrack in general fits the emotions and spirit of the show so well.

Here’s hoping OP2/ED2 are just as poignant.

Another incredible episode, and seeing Chise rise and soar like a phoenix with the opening music in the background had me glued to the screen, not to mention Lindel singing the same song again while putting the finishing touches on the staff was a beautiful scene too. Both were fantastic but Chise's conversation with Uncle Nevin where Nevin speaks about how grateful he is to have met her and 'had his last flight' with her too, not to mention she being born to help out many people's lives and change them for the better through her kindness and goodwill. Grateful to Chise's mother who didn't kill Chise when she easily could have in a fit of rage like that. It was just an emotional rollercoaster from top to bottom with so much going on, but I'm left incredibly satisfied seeing so much vivacious stuff happen in this episode.

The first cour was fantastic. I really had zero to complain about, it left me amazed with most of its episodes so far and the music/visuals have been simple but stellar too with such delicate finishes present. The pacing was slow, maybe could leave a lot of people bored, but the pacing for me felt more natural and fitting that way as it makes Chise's slow-burn development of her skills, her personality and her relationship with Elias feel a lot more organic, engaging and believable that way. I feel like everything so far has been near perfect in my opinion, and really entertaining too. Can't wait for the 2nd cour to see how that goes along (although I already hate the 2nd opening sadly from the time I saw/heard it the first time and that's not changing).

Still though, a well deserved and earned 10/10 for the first cour of this anime.

wand is cool. red, from that draginosaur tree. but kind of odd having the thing end be the one she holds and the big bird end be the one she points with?

phoenix was cool. song that played was pretty fitting

liking the soup at the end was kind of funny/charming. but wouldn't silver have made that, not skullhead?

and that dream! she had a younger sibling?!

I loved the way the interconnection of all beings was portrayed in this episode. The conversation with Nevin was powerful, it's only a temporary farewell because he exists in all things and so is she. Also, the fact that Nevin helped her reflect on the light she brings to everyone's lives was so powerful. Chise taking flight and burning with the fire was so so beautiful, I almost cried!
