Toei misjudged pretty hard, how to start the anime.
I understand why they wanted to retell the movies' stories, they had a short time to put the show on the air and they didn't have a developed plot for the future arcs ahead.
But if they were so preoccupied in making money, why not re-use the movie animation, it would save money and time so to when we got to the U.6 arc, there would be a lot of work already done for the next episodes, making the schedule less constraining for the animators.
This would probably save at least 2 months of work for the Toei animators, you already have 190 minutes worth of material, that's roughly 10 episodes, episodes 1 and 2 are good, and the episodes between the two arcs are also good additions.
So now you have 16 episodes really tight with good quality animation and without feeling dragged at any point, because who in their right mind would "drag" something that's worth a fortune for every minute of animation that has to be put on screen?
Something that can't be said for the version we got with the Super anime, because that version doesn't cost and take as much time as the movie.
Eps. 1, 2, Battle of Gods, eps. 15, 16, 17, 18, Ressurection of F, then ep 28.
Episodes 15-18 would have to be done to match the polish of the first 2 episodes, so that it doesn't clash that much with the movies' outstanding animation and level of polish, but that would just mean giving the animators a couple of weeks more to work on their episodes.
After that they can add some things to develop characters further like showing Frieza's training and developing something close to a story for that arc, maybe to foreshadow future plots like with Champa in the manga, giving hints for the U.6 arc or to just let the show breathe.
2 minutes or so in every episode from BoG and RoF, that's an entire episode worth of material, you can also give half of an episode just for Frieza with good animation and all, another half episode to give some backstory to Tagoma, Shisami and Sorbet. We're at 18 episodes now, shit, just round it to 20 episodes.
This would give Toei 10 episodes less to re-animate from the movies plus 7 weeks to distribute between their animators for the U.6 arc., and make so that this shit show would've been contained.
This sort of questions wouldn't exist if the show didn't have such a bad rep from the earlier episodes. I'm not saying this show is amazing though.
Battle of Gods - 6/10
Resurrection of F - 3/10
Universe 6 Tournament - 5/10 Piccolo, Gohan and Buu got screwed
Copy Vegeta - 4/10 just mindless filler
Black/Zamasu - 5/10 It starts pretty good but goes downhill really fast
Ep.68 to 76 Filler Arc - 8/10 Great arc, best section of the anime so far
Tournament of Power buildup - 6/10 Gohan training with Piccolo, Goku going to hell to get Frieza and the exhibition matches are the best episodes, the rest are okay to bad.
Tournament of Power so far - 7/10 There have been really great episodes, Goku and Hit vs Dyspo, Gohan vs the pendant guy from U.10, 109/110 special (Goku vs Jiren), 111 Hit vs Jiren, Gohan and Piccolo vs the Namekians or U.6, Kame/Vegeta vs Frost/Maggeta/Bottamo, Goku vs Caulifla(113), U.I.Goku vs Kefla, the Aniraza fight and the most recent episode 125, this was pretty great.
But there are also a lot of missed opportunities, let downs and some really bad episodes, not many but there are. |
