Hey. Got time to kill? Take 16 minutes to discover what the Interwar period had best to offer. Futatsu no Sekai is an anime that has been restored and featured by Sumerias1 today. Unfortunately, the dialogue cards haven't been subbed yet.
Here it is:

As mentioned in the title, it's a retelling of a fable about two worlds coexisting: the ants' and the grasshopper's.

FnS had a social commentary approach that was quite innovative, given how most productions of the time were classic folk tales devoid of practical morality. The stark contrast between the two worlds is flagrant. It is presented in a Classist way. Indeed the action takes place as dandy and bourgeois-like creatures enjoy fancy time while the laborious, proletarian-like ants struggle during summer. As winter comes, the grasshopper turns startlingly miserable.

In spite of the relatively underdeveloped techniques of era, Murata managed to flesh out a simple theme in a convincing way. The work put on art is commendable too... Behold the nifty use of spyglass effect to focus on the center of action or the chiaroscuro as the sun rises through the tall grass...

I was positively impressed by this Historical piece of animation.
