About a year after I started watching anime seriously, I wondered if I could get other people to also enjoy it. A lot of my friends were already hardcore fans that had anime blogs and would read manga a lot, and they're the ones that got me into watching anime, so I decided to try to get my family to watch some shows. I got my little brother into anime after giving him SAO (i know its not the best show but it's still an excellent gateway series) and now he has a MAL account as well and watches a lot of shows from FUNimation and stuff. Fast forward about a year and a half and I tried to get my mom into anime. She's really into music so I gave her Your Lie in April and she loved it and now watches a few shows now and then.

So my question is this: Tell me if you have ever tried to get someone into anime (or how to go about that), what shows you gave or suggested (or examples of good gateway shows), and the result. Also, would you say it is harder to get people into anime the older they are? or does it just depend on the series you give them (and how well you can guess their taste)?

Edit: the reason I'm asking about age is because I think the older you are, the more likely you are to be aware of anime stereotypes (as weird Japanese animated shows), and the less open you are to try something that could be alternatively called a 'cartoon'. Like for example, a lot of anime fans most likely watched anime as a kid, and that's how they were introduced to anime (often without realizing that it was a different medium altogether). Adults who don't/haven't watched anime but are aware of shows/anime targeted for kids will assume that's all that anime is (at least in my experience). Basically I think age matters because adults aren't as open to try something completely different from anything else they might've experienced before.

I'm just open with my loving for anime so I gave mum a watch of some Ghibli films and she liked them. Then I watched Toradora and Madoka Magica with her and she really liked both. She's 62 by the way.

Attack on Titan seems to be a great gateway anime nowadays. I have recommended it plenty of times to non-anime watchers and they all loved it and most started watching other anime. Other than that I have also recommended Koe no Katachi to people who don't know anything about anime and they loved it. Seems like you can't go wrong with those two if you wanna get people into anime.

As for the age, most of the people I've recommended anime to are in their early 20's and it wasn't hard for them to get into anime so it seems like age doesn't matter, but that's only my experience.

Drag them into your otaku cave and torture them with anime 24/7

Aside from joking, i don't think age is really a problem, but mostly what the person you want to get into anime, likes/dislikes. If he/she is already watching regular TV series (G.O.T, Breaking Bad, Friends etc...) it will probably be a bit harder to get them into anime.

As for what anime are a good gateaway, I guess any anime that is considered good, or very good, at least by most people. Just avoid too many violence/blood and nudity/fan service. These 2 aren't for everyone

I shoved Jojo into their ass.

And I suggested the typical answers that are good gateways like AoT, Angel beats and etc that are good for beginners. And if they are a closet intellectual, inb4 SEL and Proxy it is.

And obviously, ask they what they like. There are plenty gateway to anime that have brings something differently.

When it comes to getting people into the medium, I usually just ask people what they're just really into or interested. Once they tell me what they are into, I just look into series that fits to the description and give them the selection.

I don't. I mean, I've gotten a few people both online and in person to watch Ikkitousen, but it wasn't necessarily my intention to do so.

If I were to try and get someone into anime, I would start with movies, rather than series.
A series is a big time commitment while a movie is a couple of hours tops. Besides the fact that a number of films are orders of magnitude better than your typical series.

I wouldnt say there is a real concrete answer on how to since it depends on the person. I wouldnt even know how to get someone into the medium besides showing them a show that I think would appeal to their tastes.

As redtailrav said, movies are a better way to get people into anime. I get my parents into anime by this way. I showed them Wolf Children, Bakemono no Ko and some Makoto Shinkai's movies (5 cm per second, garden of words) and they really like it.
So, it movies has themes so much easier to wacth than actual anime series for a non anime fan. And some of it are really very good.

but why tho

we could not try to evangelize anime, but instead we could just let other people discover on their own terms if they are interested in it

I’d say it depends on what appeals to them and how much other media they’re actively into. If they’re into tv shows, movies or games and have already watched/played a ton of them, then they’ll probably be more willing to try out different things, and may not mind committing to longer series. This should go without saying but I’ll mention it because I’ve had a similar experience before - only try to get someone into anime if they’re actually interested in it. Nobody likes someone who forces their interests down other people’s throats.

Give them what they personally want. Depends on their preferences and whatnot.

In my experience the most difficult thing is to get people to accept the subs so starting out with a dub is probably for the best. I got a friend of mine to make the switch to subs when we watched the first season of a show in dub but S2 didn't have a dub yet but he was excited enough to still want to continue immediately.
I probably regret this post by now.

I remember back in 5th grade when my friend liked anime, and she would occasionally make references to a kind of friend of mine. I believe my thoughts were along the lines of "lol ok whatever ", but one day im bored at home and I think back on some anime she's told me about. I start out with Black Butler and im hooked. So I guess just nag your friends with enough interesting stuff to get em to like it.

I don't think I have gotten anyone into anime, I haven't watched anime for long for that matter, but if I had to say I would introduce them to it the same way I was introduced. I would give them an anime which appeals to them and is easy for newcomers. Death Note is not one of my favorites or anything like that but it is pretty good to hook up people who hasn't watched anime.

You aren't, but yet you are wrong.
I'm over 50 and even I watched anime on TV as a kid. Didn't know it as anime, but I liked what I saw.
It wasn't til about 4 years ago that I got into anime seriously.
So in that respect, age isn't so much a factor.
The biggest factor is how much exposure someone had when they were younger, and whether they were raised in an environment that viewed all animation to be for kids.

The other part of your question.. about if it depends on the shows used to introduce someone to anime.. yes, that can be significant.
I had a co-worker that would do one of those eyebrow raises like Spock from Star Trek whenever he heard me talking about anime.
Then one day, he heard me describing a show and it caught his interest.
I lent him my copy of Parasyte and he loved it. After that, then it was OPM, Death Note, Overlord, and High School DxD.
He enjoyed all of them and wanted more.

Now if I had loaned him a copy of say a CGDCT or SOL show, he might not have enjoyed it.
So choosing a show that at least partially includes something of interest to the person, is the best way to start.
Explain that there's a wide variety of anime out there. Not all anime is the same, so not everything will appeal to them.
At the same time, point out that they shouldn't judge all anime based on a handful that don't dsuit their taste.
You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language.

The length of episodes will make them change their opinion but who cares ? I won't force them to do so.

There's so many things better kept unsaid. I actually wouldn't get people into anime and I don't know truly how I can get people to be invested into anime. Like, seriously, I can at least force them to watch some series but it doesn't truly mean that they'll be invested into anime. Part of me feels it's better if I just keep it there.

I don't care about people if they do not want to watch anime. I just let them be. As long as I am enjoying it, it is better to keep it to myself. I truly respect their preferences and there's no problem with that.

Based on my own experience, its much easier to get my male acquaintances to like Anime compared to my female acquaintances. (I like to use that term because I don't have many friends irl.)

I tried convincing my friend (Girl) to watch Tokyo Ghoul because she's a fan of Death Note and she says its the only anime she's ever seen and liked. Sadly, she didn't make it through the 2nd episode. I kind of know why tho but I can't seem to put it into words.
The thing is its really hard to introduce Anime to other people because Anime has these weird, sometimes disturbing elements that we enthusiasts have gotten used to. And my heart is so tired of other people asking me for recommendations and after being extra in finding the Animes that I think would suit their tastes, but in the end they never finish it or they never get to like it to keep on watching.

I therefore concluded that trying to get other people into liking Anime is nothing but farce. And every time someone I know who won't take it seriously, asks me for a recommendation I simply say "Don't bother. You're not worth Anime's time."

Did it by accident through fanfics. I frequently participate in review games and events, which involves reviewing others' fics without any knowledge of the fandom, because I can't get any readers and reviewers due to writing for a lesser known/dead fandom. Happened to draw two reviewers with my Gungrave fanfics into watching Gungrave (plus a few PMs about "Why should I watch Gungrave although I don't like/don't care about anime?"). One of them openly dislikes anime while another just has no interest in anime in general.

I have a pretty high success rate. I give them a tailored recommendation based on the kinds of genres and themes they enjoy in other mediums. Usually it works.

Though some things don't have an analogue in anime, like Star Trek (if you say LoGH I will cut you)

And some people are non-receptive so I don't waste my time on them to begin with.

Yeah but first you need to somehow talk them into at least trying to watch it, while they consider every cartoon to be aimed at kids. Anime is for them like an asian counterpart of Cartoon Network stuff - this mostly applies to older people like my parents for example. And the fandom really makes a bad impression so teenagers and people in their 20s often refuse to watch anything because it's not something they want to be associated with. So yeah, the prejudice and misconceptions are a bigger problem here, especially when people don't really care about getting their facts straight. And I don't want to be pushy so I just leave them alone.

It's probably harder because a lot of show are addressed to young people.
But if you recommend the right shows, I'm sure it can be done.

I would probably recommend films at first if the person is not used to series such as Miazaki and Satochi movies.
Then, It would just depend on the person. I could basically recommend any anime of my list since older does'nt mean more serious and less open minded

I have a buddy who would pop in and out of my group on occasion, mainly for robots and other electronic projects as I'm the "go-to" guy for wooden parts. He thought we were all crazy, two years later he went down the same rabbit hole we all did and loves the stuff. I knew he would come around eventually.

I've found that everyone can enjoy anime in theory but most won't get anywhere near it because they don't realize that it's a medium, not a genre. He came around without us trying to get him into it, we pretty much guilt tripped him into watching it by not trying to get him into it.

Ghibli is the normal stating point for most, so I'd go with that.
