I'm pretty big into romance anime, as I believe that comedy and over dramatizations aside, anime often portrays the gradual progress of falling in love much more realistically than any other form of entertainment. That being said, there's a lot of total CRAP out there in this genre, probably moreso than in any other sect of the medium. What are your own personal favorites where romantic anime are concerned?

1. Spice & Wolf
2. Toradora! - I disliked the ending, but it's still pretty good.
3. Shakugan no Shana - I've not yet watched the second season, but the first was good.
4. Eureka Seven - Kinda cheating since I've yet to finish it, but I like what I've seen.
5. Love Hina - This would be number one if it followed the manga. This was my introduction to romantic anime, and about the only harem I can stomach.

2. Onegai Sensei

Those are like the only two I've actually seen. Maison Ikkoku is my top 5 though.

You mean romance as in the genre is romance? Or that there was romance in the anime...? Because those are two different things. Anyway:

1. Kimi ni Todoke
2. Kare Kano
3. Whisper of the Heart
4. Fruits Basket
5. Hana Yori Dango

And anime with romance:

1. Clannad + AS (it's more of a slice of life/fantasy than a romance. There just wasn't focus on the romantic part of the romance)
2. Honey and Clover II (slice of life, primarily, but again, what drove most people was their love for other people)
3. Kemonozume (the basis was a Romeo x Juliet-esque romance, but it was an action fantasy. Plus, it's arguably one of the few anime in existence to depict an adult relationship built both on lust and love)
4. Shugo Chara (it's mahou shoujo, but Amu's romantic exploits have always fascinated me)
5. Basilisk (a ninja action tragedy, but again, the driving force was a doomed romance between members of warring clans)

1.Paradise Kiss (Amazing Art and really captured the anxiety of being in love)
2.Nana (Fantastically realistic and also tragic)
3.Clannad (made me cry like a bitch)
4.ToraDora (Really good at capturing teen angst)
5.Spice and Wolf ( Really good conversations between characters, too bad season 2 was pretty terrible)

My least favorite:

1. Honey and Clover ( Overrated, unrealistic and flat out stupid with pathetic characters.)
2. Maison Ikkou ( Overated 90+ episode bore fest)
3. Basilisk ( Romeo and Juliet with ninjas, how original)
4. EF (crappy characters were crappy)
5. Tokyo Marble Chocolate ( very forgettable)

Not in order; soo many I can't choose 5 from the top of my list. I'll list my top (their all tied).

* Clannad
* Hanbun na Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
* Spice and Wolf
* 5 centimeters per second
* Tsubasa Chronicles
* Yoake Mae Yoro Ruri Iro Na
* Myself; Yourself
* Allison & Lillia
* both ef's

I have a couple more, but the romance in them were all subplots.

My top five romance shows, in no particular order:

5 Centimeters per Second – A hauntingly beautiful, but bittersweet, romance story.

Please Teacher! (Onegai Teacher) – Turns the normal romance story progression on its head: two strangers (in more ways than one!) get married... and then they gradually fall in love. It does take a while to get going, and the sci-fi premise requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief, but it's a wonderful romance.

Whisper of the Heart – A gentle story of a young girl's first love, although anyone who finds slice-of-life shows to be boring should give it a pass.

Millennium Actress – A stunningly unconventional and surreal romance story, from director Satoshi Kon.

Planetes – A surprising pick, perhaps, considering that Planetes isn't normally classified as a romance. But the romance that slowly develops between the two leads is as enjoyable as any found in a traditional romance story. Both leads are also adults, which makes this a nice change of pace from the student romances that are so popular in anime.

To many to list but if I had to pick my top 5 they would look like the following(No order)

-Nana(One of the best and most realistic experiences I have come across in anime)
-Lovely Complex(My favorite and one of the best executed Rom Com's out there)
-Honey and Clover(Talking in a general sense)
-Peach Girl(Not the greatest but I just fell in love with it)
-Rec(Short and sweet and good)

This is talking about anime, I find manga to contain much better romantic material and most of my favorites are contained there(Such as mars for example)

- Clannad Afterstory (I can't even begin to explain... the love between family, parent and child, man and woman, it's all so touching in Clannad AS)
- ef: Tale of Melodies (there was so much more angst and tragedy in this one, compared to the first season)
- Honey and Clover (I can totally relate to the characters... falling in love with best friends, love triangles, uncertainty in the future...)
- Myself;Yourself (Ending was a bit abrupt, but this show's full of drama and angsty relationships)
- 5 Centimeters Per Second (A touching story of a long-distance, puppy-love relationship. I was amazed that so much could be shown to us in one hour.)

Overrated Bore fest to be exact, but your post just further proves it's highly over rated like all of Ramiko Takahashi's work.

My post doesn't prove anything. Not like I disagree that Takahashi tends to be given more credit than deserved at times.

1. Bokura Ga Ita (greatest EVER!)
2. Suzuka (Story a bout a Girl next door and a moron)
3. School Days (clearly shows the difference of getting loved and getting laid)
4. Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien (tearjerk anime)
5. Clannad, though I really don't considered it to be romantic, its more of a slice of life anime.

Maison Ikkoku has way to many filler episodes in it, was hard for me to sit through it. I love it, but if it were shorter it would've been much better.

can't really choose 5 choices out of my favorites but at least, i'll arrange them in order.

Kimi ni Todoke [slow paced but good :D]
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ [action-packed and the pace was good]
Bakemonogatari [mysteriously good]
Honey & Clover [too dramatic but made me cry]
Ouran High School Host Club [funneh, unforgettable]
Kara no Kyoukai [the hints kept me on watching it but is also mysterious]
Fushigi Yuugi [probably one of the most underrated, adventure-romance anime]
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora [the sad ending that ever made sense]
Kannagi [also one of the most underrated good stories]
Shakugan no Shana [this just keeps me on watching]
Spice & Wolf [good, wise, rare romance]
Elemental Gelade [innocently good]
Tsubasa Chronicles [^the same]

2) Clannad series
3) 5 Centimeters Per Second
4) Honey and Clover series
5) Itazura na Kiss

I love Chihiro too much so it's always going to be first, beating out Clannad which made me cry so many times. In fact, I just love females that have something wrong with them; part of the reason why I love Honey and Clover. Itazura is there because it went way beyond what I expected.
