"Hey everyone, the chairman of the FCC is very likely to announce a vote to gut neutrality, possibly as soon as Nov. 22nd. Once a vote is called, it will become much, much harder to stop ISPs from charging us extra fees to access sites like reddit, and controlling what we see and do online by throttling and blocking sites, apps, games, and streaming services.
But there’s still hope. The most effective way to can stop this is by driving as many calls as possible to our Senators and Representatives, now through Nov. 22nd.
We're getting word that there are lawmakers who are sympathetic to our cause and considering taking action to slow the FCC down, but they won’t act unless they get more phone calls from constituents.
Please, head over to https://www.battleforthenet.com and give your Senators and Reps a call telling them to stop the FCC from slashing Title II net neutrality protections. The time to act is now.
We also have ready-made banners, modals, and graphics of various sizes here: https://www.battleforthenet.com/#join

The Net Neutrality business started way before Trump though.

Attempts to gut net neutrality have come at least as frequently and strongly from the left as the right (though not necessarily for the same reasons). It's just that Democrat attempts tended to run afoul of several of their core constituencies, whose vocal opposition caused Democrats to back off. Nonetheless, Democrats will happily assist Republicans in doing it for their own benefits - and then pretend it's all Trump's fault for the extra windfall.

What, net neutrality? Didn't this thing already go into effect a few years ago? I heard a lot of people complaining about it but I never noticed any effects it had on my internet use. I heard allegations on Youtube that net neutrality was selectively slowing down people's internet speeds but that's just a conspiracy.

So now the beast is back like SOPA and all those other weird government issue Internet restrictions? Looks like it's time to armour up boys and girls.

Let's get this rodeo going again.

Republicans have the majority in both the house and senate. They are not going to cave on gutting Net Neutrality. Most Republicans tend to be very pro-business. It amounts to calling elected officials in California to support the 2nd amendment or calling elected officials in Texas to repeal the death Penalty or calling elected officials in Vermont or Oklahoma to enact Californian gun control laws.It ain't gonna happen.

the time to stop this from happening was when trump was running for the elections. at this point

im just worried the ISP companies manage to force the supreme court from having net neutrality ever being brought back a thing.

The sky is falling!

I say let it fall. If ISPs abuse their position enough, the backlash might get our elected idiots to permanently include the internet as a "communication service" (which it obviously is, and not an "information service" that the incompetent/liar Ajit Pai (FCC Chairman) has tried to claim). Being conservative leaning myself, I can say this guy is hurting the Republican party (from a voter's perspective).

Unless this applies world-wide, it's not a big issue. Competition of non-profit or at least non-corporate sites and sites of those who are unwilling to pay extra will outsource to domains other than ".com" - if the speed restrictions become truly significant, in the long term the US server market will get crushed.

That is, if I understood the issue correctly. I kinda forgot whether the issue was server-side or client-side.

We already pay extra for premium internet services. Perhaps gutting net neutrality will make it more affordable for people to meet their basic internet needs.

ISPs already overcharge if you don't monitor your bill.

But it was apparently mostly Democrats who openly went against this. And mostly republicans who were openly for it. Obama gave Pai an FCC seat in the first place, yes, but he had to be non-partisan by design. It was Trump that made him head of the FCC.

Lawsuits will be filed, Congress can pass laws to weaken this, but I wouldn't give them that much credit.

MAL's gone full Reddit now...

Prior to 2015 we didn't have Obama's net neutrality and everything was fine. He basically passed SOPA/PIPA/CISPA and renamed them as "net neutrality" to make gullible idiots support it. Even if what the Redditor types say about this being a corporate takeover is true (it's not, they're just being watched by the FTC instead of the FCC now) it's easier to fight against corporations than governments.

The internet wasn’t broken before 2015 and ISPs don’t block or throttle

TL;DR: It remained unbroken because of constant vigilance, not because ISPs didn’t try

As evidence that Title II-based rules are unnecessary, critics point to the success of the internet before 2015. Leaving aside that, as we noted above, internet access was governed by Title II for a good deal of that period, this argument is true. Of course, it’s only true because of constant vigilance by regulators!

Internet providers have attempted to throttle traffic by type or by user (Comcast in 2007), have imposed arbitrary and secret caps on data (AT&T 2011-2014), hidden fees that had no justification or documentation (Comcast in 2016), and tried to give technical advantages to their own services over those of competitors (AT&T in 2016). These attempts were only revealed in retrospect once they were discovered and lawsuits filed. If the deterrents those lawsuits provided eventually had been part of preemptive rulemaking then these practices would never have been attempted at all.

2015 wasn’t some magic year, either: the FCC and Congress had proposed net neutrality rules going back more than a decade before then. It’s only in 2015 that they made them stick.

Now, even if we were to grant that ISPs had not attempted these things when they clearly did, it would be unreasonable to think that they wouldn’t attempt to in the future. Voluntary agreements not to are hardly a substitute for strong rules against anti-consumer practices known to have been instituted before.
