Voice actress Caitlin Grass: "If an anime hasn't been licensed where you live... you're not allowed to watch it!"

I was browsing the great Dark_Sage's Twitter when I came across a few angry tweets about the American anime industry:

https://twitter.com/feedmeyourtears/status/919290644597739521

Then I came across this retweet about a tweet written by American dub voice actress (lol) Caitlin Grass:

https://twitter.com/animeoutsiders/status/919259078693736448

And what is this absolutely terrible logic she is speaking of, you might wonder?

Not only did she take a shit on a big chunk of the fanbase, she also photographed a dude without his permission. But it's okay, because she's sort of kind of famous. Smells like entitlement to me!

Did ya hear that? If you want to watch a series or film that hasn't been licensed where you live and the only way to get a hold of it is to pirate it, then you're a privileged scumbag who should be thinking of the poor licensing companies... especially if said licensing companies refuse to release that anime! Huh? Amirite? Amirite?

I am already in favor in piracy but this is one of the cases where it's, without a doubt, VERY justified... so GFTO Ms. Grass!

What is in the quotes is true. You might not like it. You might choose to break the rules and watch it anyway. But that doesn't make it any less true.

I can't find where she actually said that, though.

Yes how dare someone care about the ability for the industry in which they work to survive.

And I think you have some sort of fundamental misunderstanding about both Robin Hood and what socialism is.

You like posting irrelevant stuff and pretending it counteracts what the person you are arguing with said, don't you?

Firstly, that hypothetical scenario is completely unrelated to the topic at hand, and secondly even if noone cares about the rules (which quite obviously is not the case in the situation that is the actual topic of the thread, if you remember what that was) then it does not change the fact that it is against the rules.

im not saying its wrong im just one of the poor people that only can afford monthly internet connection (heck my internet is somewhat illegal too since i bypass its firewall filter to maximize the speed)

so i do not care much since i cannot afford it anyway

Everything I post is relevant in one way or another
Firstly, that hypothetical scenario is completely unrelated to the topic at hand,
How is it unrelated? The OVA is old, shitty, the company that animated it doesn't exist anymore and the chances that said OVA will ever get a release in the US, even less where I live, is zero. It's very related.
and secondly even if noone cares about the rules (which quite obviously is not the case in the situation that is the actual topic of the thread, if you remember what that was) then it does not change the fact that it is against the rules.
And? The rules can be wrong.

Am i the only one who thinks like this?: Piracy makes some people that otherwise would not do it (cause they don't have the means/are not willing to pay), start watching anime. As a result some of them get into anime enough to start buying things on their own even though they can just pirate them. In other words Piracy in some way gives the anime industry money. (if it wasn't for piracy those people would have never gotten into anime and thus the anime industry would have gotten no money regardless)

If one doesn't watch anime, they can't pay money for it.
If one pirates anime, they might pay money for it.
But yea obviously the "correct" (and best for the industry) way is to properly pay for things they can.

But if you tell me to not watch something cause its not licensed then fuck you and your shitty voice acting.... i'm sorry, my deep inner thoughts leaked a bit.

also please, please don't compare piracy with drugs....

If the anime industry doesn't care enough to license a show in my country then why should I care about their profits? The money goes more to the publisher than to the animation team anyway...It's not that piracy is killing the anime industry, the anime industry is killing itself

Somewhat off-topic here, but:
Robin Hood was about a yeoman-turned-outlaw who stole money from rich travellers and gave money to poor ones.
Piracy is about taking from anyone (rich or poor) and then hoarding it to yourself. Or in the case of some forms of internet "piracy", distributing it around to anyone (rich or poor) who wants to take it.
Socialism is a socio-economic system, that doesn't support either of these things.

well you are playing with semantics game here

so lets just agree to disagree

and anyway the yearly AJA report (im waiting for this years report) says the anime industry total profit still have a healthy growth so piracy is not hurting their profit much anyway

With your logic pretty much anything, from child marriage to spousal rape, can be justified as long as ”it’s the rules”.

If child marriage is within the rules of where you live then it is allowed. If it is not within the rules then it is not allowed.

Whether or not something is allowed has nothing to do with whether I believe it to be morally correct or justified. There are plenty of things that are illegal - which is to say not allowed - in my country that I believe should be legal - which is to say allowed - and vice versa. Under the society we live in one's personal moral convictions does not determine what one is or is not allowed to do.

Why am I even having to have this argument? It should be obvious to anyone with a basic grasp of English. "Allowed" is a synonym of "permitted", not of "right".

I have nothing more to say to someone who makes statements in response to one line of the post which would be not just answered but shown to be incredulously stupid by reading the following line of the same post that is being quoted.

Your every post is filled with shoving words in my mouth that I not only did not say but which I specifically stated that I was not saying and where my entire point was a repudiation of the very argument you are claiming that I am making.

This entire thread is bordering on libel, anyway, given that it all started by you putting words into the mouth of Caitlin Grass which you haven't provided any evidence that she ever actually said.

On the matter of whether it's morally acceptable to illegally watch series that are not legally available where you live? I used to do it myself, so I certainly understand the reasoning behind it, and it would be hypocritical of me to start getting preachy and telling others that they're wrong for doing it. Which is why I very deliberately avoided doing exactly that, even though I can also understand the arguments against the practice.
The reason why I've largely stopped, though, is thanks to the big increase in the stuff that is legally available here in the UK, and I'm firmly of the opinion that as many series as possible should be made available to watch in as many places as possible, and the best way to make this the case is of course to support legal sources that do exist at every opportunity.

Tbh privacy itself is not the problem itself, but rather the resultant of the problem itself, which in the case, is the lack of proper streaming services. I live in a place where only one legit streaming site provides the most current anime to stream but even then they only stream only 2~3 animes per season. Due to this I was forced to watch all the newest anime on illegitimate websites with accurate translated subs, and a tight uploading schedule a 12 hours behind the airing time at Japan! AND IT'S TOTALLY FREE!!! WHAT A F**KING BARGAIN!!!
If Japan wants to stop people pirating their weeaboo trash, they should allow more streaming services to stream all their anime, just like the gaming industry with their online digital distribution softwares like steam. Ever Since having steam installed on my computer, I have never ever in my life used utorrent to torrent a single game from the internet and found steam is a convenient and safe place to get all the latest aaa games and indie gems like undertale, without the hassle of buying dvds from a store and some storage for these disks and their packaging, or downloading from sites asking you to do a free survey. If we don't have to endure the lack of legit streams for anime, wait for mangas and light novels to be translated god knows how long, then we would have paid for services due to convenience! So please distribute more of your weeaboo trash Japan .

Steam-like service for video streaming will never happen, because copyright laws of movies have one of the most bullshit regulations that additionally make things complicated and are designed to fuck people over even more.

The opinions of a non Japanese voice actor are equal to nothing, she doesn't even exist.

btw @Kuuderes_Shadow
whats your personal opinion on this matter?

Well at least Funi showed that it wants to expand towards the rest of the EU if it can.

I live in the country next to you (The Netherlands) and I only have half of crunchy and Netflix who also has drawback like No english dubs of Trigun and FMA, heck they used to have FMAB dubbed (but that only had 52 eps so it didn't had the last 12 eps) it sucks that they removed FMAB's dub really (or did it just got regionlocked on Netflix?)....

I see piracy as a Necessary evil that should go away when Anime has a bigger and better legal reach.

Yes, yes, person in capitalist society supports the evil of universal copyright in the information age, failing to understand understand how a society can possibly value things which aren't owned by someone and turned into capital. Tell us something new.
