Anime in English usually refers to a style of animation originating in Japan,[1] heavily influenced by the manga (Japanese comics) style and typically featuring characters with large eyes, big hair and elongated limbs, exaggerated facial expressions, brush-stroked outlines, limited motion and other distinctive features. The term may also be used[by whom?] for other animation connected to Japan or to anime proper, irrespective of style. The word comes from Japanese アニメ anime, meaning "animation" in general, and is typically pronounced Anime-en-US-pronunciation.ogg /ˈænəˌmeɪ/ (help·info) or /ˈænəˌmə/ in English.

The plural of anime is anime, just as the plural of put is still put. For your info the plural of fruit is still fruit, reason being they are all categories or general reference terms

English is hard eh?

sadly, put is generally a verb, and thus doesn't have a plural form. However, in the archaic noun form, the plural of put is puts.

English can be a difficult language sometimes.

Moreover, fruits can be pluralized if you're counting multiple fruits. ie one fruit, two fruits, three fruits etc. afaik, the reason why anime isn't pluralized as animes is simply because it's a foreign word, and japanese doesn't use -s to pluralize.

as for anime/animes, yes it is a bit ignorant to make that mistake, but it really isn't that big of a deal.

I deem this debate irrelevant.

Yeah, put wasn't the best example of a plural that doesn't end with "s" , replace it with "fish" or "sheep", which would both fit.

I prefer it if people call it anime as they should, but there's too many illiterate people on the Internet to complain about it. Some of them may only know English as a second language, which would make it tougher to master if they are used to speaking in another language.

Thinks... now that I read your posts, I have to say I should have voted the other way. But then, I was going with the idea, there are always going to be gramatical problems where ever one goes. Most of my mistakes, and English is my first laungage, lies with words that sound the same and/or spelled the same, and the ie, ei, because I learned from my mother, who learned German and English at the same time, and she is used to the reverse rule.

it would sound irregular.

then shouldn't it be
"I've seen so many different animes"?

Putting that aside, anime means animation in general and since plural form of animation is "animations", I love to put "s" for plural anime.

True... it is one thing to point out a grammer issue, another to come down hard on it. But I don't think that encourages people to continue saying it wrong. More likely for people to come down hard on the person for being a grammer nazi.

Who in the world says animations? Its different for cartoon because cartoon is singlular. Animations does not fit anywhere as an adjective or noun or anything. Animation is in itself a plural world you need multiple pictures to turn things to an animation. you don't make multiple animations to make an animes....

I think making a thread complaining about people using the term animes instead of just anime crosses that ling between pointing out a grammar issue and coming down hard on it.

I think it's cute your trying to argue the English language.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/animation

the Plural of animation is animations, weather you like it or not, that's what it is.

Also the people who say animations are people like me, you know ANIMATORS.

If you're going to argue back to how Englishmen spell animation in plural, why not argue back to how the Romans spelled animare? Oh wait, it's a verb, it has none. Well, no matter, standard Latin plural then.

The conclusion, is anime is the singular, animi in plural.

What you say, go later back?

oh shit

Either way, who cares, I don't see any good reason for either - if anime is better than animes because it's closer to the original, okay, but then why do you not say "universe/universa", "piano/piani", "smörgåsbord/smörgåsbord" or whatever other proper original language plural forms (or other, like definitives or infinitives or...)? Putting an -s to a word is indeed proper English procedure.

And then I'm one of those who try to go to the language the word was loaned from. There's no right or wrong in language in all matters, and definitely not in this case.

also, this is silly

Yes its irrellevant indeed. but its funny to see people keep insisting there is such thing as animes. Its funny how youre linking a web2.0 site thats a spinoff of wiki. Like KyuuAL said anyone can write that drivel. Theres not even any references so how can that be legit?

Just Google it. How many "professional" anime sites use the word animes? Even japs don't use the word animes so whos the correct one. The japs who made the genre mainstream or the weaboos who insist that anything the European Union says is infinitely true?

Google results:
Animes - 16 million results
Anime - 173 million results
thats 10.8 results for every 1 result. There isnt even one website that is labeled like http://www.animes*.com. Why is this? Even the webhost that owns animes.com refers to only things that say "anime" With the exception of forums or user made comments, animes is virtually nonexistent.

I challenge you to find the word animes in reputable websites

funimation
sony
animenewsnetwork

etc

and prove that they in fact do use the word animes. or even write what the word animes is in kanji. then ill shutup.

Heh funny my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Computer Animation says other wise. Your the one claiming your personal opinion on how to spell the plural of Animation over rides the god damn dictionary.

But in the end it doesn't even matter because the term Anime to begin with is a Slang term you might as well be arguing the proper pluralization of Shizznit or 1337, this only proves your a hyper nitpicker who feels the need to validate his own personal opinion through useless threads about nonsensical information.
