In my humble opinion the movie is awful. Just awful. They make Ryuk seem like a prick that only wants light to give up the death note. Light just shows the Death Note to some random ass hot girl and then they kill together just out of the blue. Light has no sister his mom died. And alot more things. BUT THE WORST PART IS : THERES NO POTATO CHIP SCENE. Overall 3/10

I understand that Japanese creators needs money (because their shitty personnel management) but they need to stop with selling licenses to west because this movie is only the beginning.

How can i say this they made Light a boy that in the anime was popular AF and he was basically Mr steal yo girl and made him a edgy unpopular teen who dresses all in black with bleached hair basically a school shooter. they killed off his mother and he doesnt have a sister.

Well let's say this:

Movie adaptations of popular shows mostly seem to fail wether it be series from the west or from the east just like Video game adaptations.
Coz for some reasons these movies are only done by Bad directors or Directors who had a bad day.
Which is sad because the west CAN make extremely good movies.

But tbh I haven't watched the deathnote movie yet.

I don't know what everyone was expecting.
Light is an emo kid, not one of the smartest people in his country. L is black.
And no dramatic potato chip eating scene. That was one of the most important things in the anime. And they didn't even include.
An all round disappointment. Let's hope they don't fuck up the SnK remake.

Only watched about half an hour of it so far, but I can't say I like it. It honestly doesn't feel true to the original spirit of death note, Light seems kind of.. dumb in comparison to the Japanese version. I doubt this is going to be a battle of wits like the original, which is a shame.

I also dislike his crush on the girl, it's such a contrived motive. Why bother giving the characters similar names if they aren't similar characters in the slightest? If this hadn't marketed itself as a remake, but moreso something with a similar setting, perhaps Light's character would've bothered me less.

Didn't watch but from what I've read, they made Light to be a total idiot and changed a lot of stuff that made the original enjoyable. I wish Hollywood would learn from these bad adaptations and just stop trying, but obviously their greed goes before common sense.

Well if it has German characters then it will be an improvement lol.

I'm definitely gonna watch it, but I am 98% sure it will be garbage. It's not that I don't like movies. I freaking love movies, but you can't make a movie out of anime or manga... They tried with Dragon Ball, turned out to be a 2.5/10 rated movie...

I'm like 99% sure the director just dumbed down all the themes and characterization and thought he was clever when it really is a giant pile of fail. None of the character remain in their original 'role' in the narrative, in their original personality. The atmosphere of the whole show is changed. It has nothing to do with the original except the name.

Still, no need to go full-on weeb in this thread, fellow MAL members.

It was alright 5/10. I think if they had a full series to work with they could have stayed more true to the anime. If you compare it like a 1 for 1 copy of the anime its more like 3. Ironically the most faithful character was black L.

Haven't watch it yet, but guys it's a hollywood adaptation, it's not suppose to be like the original series. The fact that L is a black dude should give you enough hint that they were never intending to make it similar to the original.

All they did is take the concept from death note and make their own movie out of it. This series had no chance of doing well, since people are going to compare it to the source material.

I would be more interested to hear the opinion of persons that haven't watch death note or read the manga to hear their opinion on this movie, since anime fans are bias when it comes to the source material and to the west in general when it comes to adapting Japanese source material.

You know, when I first heard about this, I thought it could work. Death Note is one of the few popular anime series that could actually be done in a live action and retain most of what made it good.

Unfortunately, based on what I've read, it seems like they failed. Light's casting choice was terrible, and they made his character into an emo, ugly outcast, which is the exact opposite of the true Light. Light was my favorite part of Death Note, and it looks like they ruined him.

In general I think that Western TV is slightly better than anime, but this just further proves that Western TV trying to adapt anime is a terrible idea. Anime should stay as anime.

What's the difference?

And the weird thing is that The west made Western adaptations of Japanese stories. Hachi, 3:10 to yuma and the fistfull of dollars series are good examples of Westernization of japanese stories done well.

So to see them fail at Adaptations of Anime is pretty weird.

It was definitely worse and mediocre at best, even though I liked Dafoe's and Stanfield's performances. I had some hopes for this film, since it was made by the director of "The Guest" which was a good movie.

The Japanese Live-Action movies take some creative liberties with the source material here and there, but they don't stray a lot from the core of the original story. I would recommend them.

I just watched the first half-hour.

Death Note has been "adapted" into a full-on power-trip fantasy for socially outcast 13-year-old boys to project themselves into. I've heard that same accusation made of the original, but this is just blatant. Finds a magic notebook, starts banging a hot girl and killing criminals from his bedroom with it.

Light's mom is also dead in the Netflix movie only, so...wow, they went even harder anime than the original!

Might be interesting ... I will watch but I hate who they chose for Kira... I mean like... He looks like some edgy teen who can't even pass a grade 6 spelling test... Not the super genius, handsome, badass he should be... But I will keep an open mind...

But one things for sure... It'll be better than any Japanese live action film... Since... The US is number 1 movie maker... I mean Ghost in a Shell was off on it's pacing and story but the acting and animation of the movie were amazing... No offense Japan but you suck at acting and CGI...
