| Gintama's comedy is like Binbougami ga, Danshi Koukousei, and Barakamon. Parody and comedy anime with dirty jokes but giving moral messages at the end of episode. Depend on your taste...what kind comedy do you like? What is the best comedy anime that you've watched and why? Edited: After read your synopsis on your profile about "watched a lot of moe anime and will avoid action anime that doesn't have cute character design" this show is not for you. |

| I watched Gintama as an anime newbie and it became (and still is) my favorite. However, it depends on what type of humor you're into. It's heavy on parody, but that's not the main focus. There's more non-parodical jokes than parodical ones. In most episodes, there will be one or two line that's a parody of something. Even if you don't get it, missing out those reference won't hinder your experience that much. There are certain episodes that is a complete parody of something (especially the DBZ ones), but even if you don't get the references, the series still manages to create comedy using its characters and their absurd situations. It's just that getting the reference adds more to the experience. Considering that you like Nichijou and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, you might like Gintama too. But the problem with Gintama is that it might take a lot of episodes to get into. There's no definitive point where the series gets good. It just gets better and better as the series progresses. For example, the first 20 episodes is weaker than the next 20 episodes, which is weaker than the next 20 episodes, which is weaker than the next 20 episodes and so forth. Therefore, you might end up liking the series in the first 20 episodes, or might need 50+ episodes to gain interest. This is why it's up to you if you feel like starting a series that can otherwise be seen as demanding. Personally, I started liking Gintama at around 20 episodes, but I started loving Gintama at around the 80 episode mark. |

| The humour of Gintama is not for everyone. Besides the parodies... The Anime has a dark humour, sarcasm, dirty jokes and many weird dialogues between the characters. If you like the characters, you will most likely enjoy this Anime because the characters are beside the humour a huge part of the Anime. Gintama is overall hard to recommend because not everyone likes the humour and some people think it's boring. |
