Sports genre
Competitive and stuff
but now after the release of haikyuu and kuroko no basuke, I gotta say the sports genre is dying or will probably die.
The ideas are too cliched. There's gonna be an old team that was good but it is failing and new students arrive and rebuild the team. Along the way, they get a rival, a wall(Team that focuses on defense and hardships), bla bla bla.
Don't hate me
Its my personal opinion.

People like that cliche stuff (Haikyuu and Kuroko are pretty popular and highly rated) so I highly doubt the sports genre is ever going to die

You know, it's only been 3 years since Ping Pong saved anime.

....sports are repetitive. Naturally you'd expect a very long running sports anime to be repetitive. There's only so much you can do focusing on a sports team or a boxer or anything like that.

It's really hard to find a sports anime that I will give less than 8/10.

I like it. That's called character development. D= and I always enjoy a hood MC, who finds his own strength and has to struggle to do so.

There is Ballroom this season. What's wrong with it? (Not the necks, I know xDD)

I second this, the only sports I really enjoy is Ping Pong because it does not use the same kind of pattern that sports anime usually use. Although it didn't sell well in Japan... T.T

Haikyuu appeals to a wide audience, Kuroko is more for the fujo both sold well too. Also, Ping Pong didn't save anime in fact it didn't even sell 1K.

It's funny how people seem to dislike the "weak protagonist turned strong" progression (admittedly quite a few sports anime don't exactly have weak main characters, just that competition gets tougher). How else is a long running sports anime supposed to go? It's just how any feasible long running sports anime would naturally progress. I do have my personal issues with the sports anime I watch, but the "OMG another weak protagonist turned strong story" criticism is ridiculous.

You can't "Ping Pong" a sports anime for 50 episodes!
I swear I'm not a lolicon.

If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Opinions are all relevant. I express mine freely and believe everyone should too. Unless you say "<Insert anime here> is the best! Everything else sucks", then GTFO.

Sooner or later it will be on Funimation's discount line and [be a] S.A.V. E. anime though. :p

As for the topic, aren't there at least 2 sports anime this season though?

While sports Anime are still being made, I will admit that they're more about eye candy than story these days.

You'll have to jump back a few decades to get a sports Anime with a quality storyline.

Temporary solution: Watch Ashita no Joe. It's certainly not a new anime, but it's nothing like the things you described.

Go watch Major
Go watch Hajime no Ippo
Go watch Cross Game
Go watch Chihayafuru
Go watch Ping Pong

All those are sports anime that have had seasons aired recently so this tells me that sports anime is not dying. Although I will admit that the genre tends to rely more on fujoshi appeal these days, but that just makes it more rewarding when a decent sports anime does come around.

This.

Also, no matter how repetitive sports get, as long as you've got a hot strong set of characters, you can't really go wrong imo.
After all, if you're invested in the characters you'll probably stick around regardless. That's how I feel about Haikyuu anyway. The volleyball matches are way better than I could have ever anticipated, but what makes the series really shine are the characters and their interactions.

Plus, there are tons of different sports that don't necessarily end with straight up win/lose results. In non-team sports like Figure Skating, there are tons of placements and lots of other interesting bits like musical choices, choreography and the overall image of the skater...it's one of the things I loved about Yuri on Ice, and I feel the same about Ballroom e Youkoso so far as well.

All we need now is an anime about the Olymics.
Or some sort of deconstruction of the sports genre where all the players are on steroids or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What we need is more seinen sports anime. Something like Slam Dunk or One Outs. That should save sports anime.
Looking at this season, Ballroom e Youkoso looks really good. I really like it.

slamdunk and ballroom e youkoso is shounen... funny because IIRC, slamdunk also really famous for fujoshi back then...

ping pong sales around 4K (which already pretty good since it doesn't really cater towards BD buyers audience)...

it's also win awards...
