I know I'm repeating things from other forums, here. But eh, why not?

Anime like the YKK anime:

Aria (any and all)
Kokoro Toshokan
Haibane Renmei
Ocean Waves
Whisper of the Heart
Tonari no Totoro
Piano

Manga like YKK manga:

Aruku Hito
AQUA & ARIA
Chikyuu Misaki
Emma
Kamichu!
Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsuna Koto (Someday's Dreamers)
Mushishi
Onna no Ko no Shokutaku
Yotsubato!
Yuunagi no Machi, Sakura No Kuni

Not to mention the manga that Ashinano-sensei started as an assistant with:
Aa! Megami-sama!

Lastly, it's interesting to consider the manga-zine that YKK ran in: Kodansha's Afternoon. Here's a sampling of what's serialized in that:
* Ah! My Goddess
* Blade of the Immortal
* Blame!
* Genshiken
* Mushishi
* Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko
* Narutaru (Shadow Star)
* Eden - It's an Endless World!

Other suggestions:
Shirley (same author as Emma)
Mohiro Kitoh's Short Stories (especially the later chapters)
Ichigo Mashimaro
Yotsubato!
Mushishi (Ayase's job seems somewhat similar)

Of course, you could also check out Ashinano's other works:
PositioN
Kumabachi no Koto
Kabu no Isaki

God, I love that one. Colorful visuals, pleasant music, lovable characters, and an interesting premise; all tinted with the nostalgic atmosphere of the 80's. I was planning to write a review for it but Ashrie has already mentioned everything that I wanted to say. In many ways, I prefer Kamichu! to ARIA. XD

Seishi, you can usually find the people who are hosting the scanlations on http://www.mangaupdates.com/releases.html But if that fails you, then there's #lurk on irchighway.net #lurk is a sewer of trolls and flame-artists, but I usually just lurk and leech and leave. ^_^

Tanaka Yutaka is among my very favourite mangaka. _Ai-Ren_ was just beautiful, but what's even more like _YKK_ is the one-shot, _Mimia-Hime_ and the recent continuation in serialization, _Tales of Mimia-Hime_. You should check it out.

Sure thing I will look them up and add them to my list of things to see.

Amanchu! And Sketchbook Full Color's, they are not similar when it comes to the story, but both animes/mangas have caused me the same sensations as YKK and especially Amanchu!. This one has a beautiful OST, just like the 98 OVA, the OST of both animes, they were created by the same composers who go by the name, Gontiti. These made the OST for these two anime and if you enjoyed the OST for the '98 OVA, you'll love the one for Amanchu!.
Pd: Sorry for my lousy english :(
