So.. uhh.. anyone read or used to read any anime magazines? Example: Newtype, Animerica, Photoculture Addicts, Anime Insider, Animedia, Animage. And the online magazine I know of is AnimeFringe.

Yeah, I had a few copies of Newtype but never bothered to subscribe. Expensive too. Rather spend the money buying manga. I like the pretty pictures though. Japanese anime magazines seem more worthwhile (since they have exclusive information on a series or characters that are not revealed in the actual anime) but sadly since I can't read Japanese, boo.

You marked the same exsact opinion little lady. Newtype Magazine is way to expensive for just a Magazine with glossy pages. For real uptodate anime info I read WIZARDS Anime Insider Magazine which has alot of helpful info, reviews, commentary, interviews, and jokes about favorite animes. I also read Shonen Jump since I don't buy Manga as much as I used too, I read these cheep magazines to have my fill of anime. It also comes with the things I like and extra goodies (I love Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards).

Also on a side note, Newtype Magazine was actually intended for Gundam Fans only since the magazine was solely based around Gundam and it's models. But as time progressed they introduce more and more to the Magazine. If you don't believe me, then were did the name Newtype come from? Answer, Mobile Suit Gundam.

I was a Newtype subscriber for 2 years but let my subscription expire since there was just too many things I started hating about the magazine. For a long period while I was subscribed they covered the same shows ad nauseam. If it wasn't Fullmetal Alchemist on the cover, then it was Gundam. And even if they weren't on the cover you can be sure they were somewhere in the magazine. Also their reviews are not reviews at all. They never have anything negative to say about the shows they cover; even if the shows have horrible flaws. Instead their reviews came off as an extended summary of the what you'd find on the back of the DVD.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

That is why you should read Anime Insider. It's worth it.

I've read some Protoculture Addicts, Newtype, and Anime Insider. They're interesting to read when I see them lying around and pick them up but they're just either not up-to-date with what's happening in japan, which is something that can't really be helped because of licensing and stuff, or they're just...not really interesting to read.

So I pretty much just buy magazines now (i.e. Megami, CompH's) just for the goodies inside, which means they're japanese hehe.

I've read some of Newtype but haven't read any of the others. I agree with the above that newtype seems to recover the same series over and over. Might check out Anime Insider now after reading this thread though.

Anime Insider is good. I have an issue of Neo, but those magazines are expensive, plus it's British so the information and stuff doesn't match up over in the states. Newtype is good, but too expensive, IMO.

I think Newtype is expensive because they always include a DVD with anime episodes on it. With the amount of eps they have on there, it's like buying a DVD at 50% but you get a magazine free with it. =P

And yea, I work at B&N, and I always see new covers for Newtype, but the inside is almost always the same. I love Anime Insider, though.

And also, I saw a new magazine that's kind of like Newtype that I haven't seen before, where they include a DVD. It's called Otaku USA.

On the front of the cover, is the biggest blatant typo that I've ever seen.

The Melancholy of Harumi Suzumiya. *cough*

I think they're a new magazine. ....Really new.

I like Anime Insider, Shojo Beat and Neo. Neo is not that great and quite expensive, for the same money you can buy shojo beat which has about 250 pages more!

I read Anime Insider and as well collected every issue since it first came out years ago. Anime Insider is at the top of my list. I read Shonen Jump every now and then. I quit buying issues every month in November of 2003.
I like reading Newtype even though they took out some of my favorites sections like Anime Land. I've successfully collected every issue for 3 straight years since 2004. I might start reading Protoculture Addicts soon.

Sadly I only have 3 issues of Megami Magazine.
These magazines give me something to look forward to every month.

Let's make of note of this: NEWTYPE MAGAZINE IS BAD. There is nothing good about it, just alot of flashy pictures and not enough info, and the magazine no longer serves it's original purpose, for the Gundam Fans. The term Newtype came from freaken Mobile Suit Gundam and the magazine was intended for Gundam Fans. Along the lines they decided to change it. Dam them!!

All of the mags I used to read are now extinct...Animerica ran it's last issue earlier this year, I think, an Tokyopop mag has been gone for quite a while. But they were both around when I first started getting on to the anime scene and needed an "outlet" X)!

Animerica wasn't doing so well that's why there are no more. There was also that issue beceause when people wanted to go to the Animerica website they ended up on the front page of a Hentai/Porn site and made many parents upset. People forgot to write animericamagazine.com instead of animerica.com. Tokyopop was going to realease a line of Magazines but then they decided not to do it anymore, because of the competing companies like VIZ Media's Shonen Jump and ADV's Newtype Magazine. They still send the magazines to online members of the TOKYOPOP website thought. I should know, I get them seasonally.

I'm also trying to find a good place to get a subscription to Megami< anyone got an idea?
