I finished watching HxH 1999 and even saw the Greed Island OVA's. I noticed how much more it improved on the manga than 2011 did. (fleshed out characters, better art/animation and even soundtrack)

Anyone feel the same way? I know people gravitate more towards 2011 since it has a newer look to it but if you havent given 1999 a try, then please do. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Hm, as someone who enjoyed the 2011 adaption of H x H much more than the 1999 adaption, it's interesting to see someone who favors the 1999 adaption for the same reasons that I favor the 2011 adaption! However, the scenes that were added in the 1999 adaption that were not in the 2011 adaption were fun to watch.

The only reason why 2011 is somewhat better than the 1999 version is because the older version only composed of 60+ EPs while the 2011 is almost double of that.

I will watch the 90's HxH one day, but my main deal with if it'll be the same level of quality is that the 2011 version has the Chimera Ant arc which is easily the best arc of HxH, blows everything else out of the water, whereas 90s only goes up to Greed Island. And I only liked Gon and Killua from the 2011 version of HxH if we cut out the Chimera Ant arc.

Though who knows, I might appreciate characters like Kurapika more in the 90s version.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

Yeeaaaah, no. The overtly dark and brooding atmosphere just totally took me out of the experience. Although HxH is heralded as one of the most risqué shonen series there is, it does also lend itself a decent amount of levity and lightheartedness that helps to make the characters and setting all the more endearing.

It's the same problem I had with the 1990 Jojo OVAs. They're way too caught up in upscaling the darker aspects of the source material that they completely botch up the core essence of their respective series.

Thats not true. I wasnt even talking about it being darker. I was saying the characters are fleshed out more in 1999 than 2011

1999 has OVA sequels tho, it's 62+8+8+14, so that's 92 episodes to reach the chimera ant arc, while HxH 2011 took 75.
But 148-92 is still a pretty big 56 episode difference.

oh yeah, nobunaga (and the whole troupe) is amazing in 1999, he has my favorite body language in anime, especially this one ting he does where whenever he wants to appear friendly and at ease heputs his hands into his sleeves like a monk to show he doesn't expect or plan on drawing his sword and trusts the people around him (or wants them to trust him), and the rest of the troupe all feel so much more human and their friendship is just better portrayed,
like the scene where paku shoots memories into nobu and coltorpi, in 1999 it has them (nobu and colt) standing next to each other, subtly reinforcing them being partners and on the same team, while nobu has his arms in his sleeves, paku asks if THEY are alright with her shooting them, nobu says "she shouldn't ask dumb questions" and "we've known each other for years", then coltorpi nods his head in agreement, after which paku shoots them,
while 2011 has nobu standing far away from both colt and paku while holding his sword (because he just used it), paku asks the same question, to which nobu responds that "she shouldn't ask stupid questions", after which paku shoots them both without getting any response from colt first.

Agreed. 2011 horribly butchered the source material imho. the only redeeming quality it has is the Chimera Ants arc.

Can't really compare to 2011 since I haven't seen it yet, but the '99 version is definitely not better than the manga. It has pretty art and usually delivers when it matters so I won't call it bad, but the pacing is much worse and the voice acting performances are pretty rubbish across the board.

I'm with you on the paku one but I disagree that the friendship is better portrayed they were the same for and both versions didn't change much from a characterization standpoint.

Yeah, I agree that HxH (1999) is better than HxH (2011). The character designs were better, the soundtrack was better, and the Hunter Exam arc in the 1999 version was better too. I think the only thing that was better in the 2011 version (pre-Chimera Ant arc) was the Heaven's Arena arc, because the 1999 version skipped the Hisoka vs Kastro fight, while the 2011 version showed it.

wew this thread is like my wetdream. I don't know about being canon, true to the story or having more materials adapted to the series, but 1999 ver. soundtrack is godly, watching the first episode as Gon was about to embark on a journey, with the theme song playing in the background, gosh that was amazing! Overall the color tone was also better.. hell I dont want to be thinking Killua is cute when he's feeling murderous. 1999 ver. have the perfect balance. It doesn't look as refined as the newer anime but heck, I prefer my anime a little less than perfect to be frank, looking too clean make me feel out of it. It's like how some people prefer to add a "grainy" effect to the video of a newer anime to make it less polished. (happened to the Jormungand anime apparently stated by the subber)

Granted, I've only seen part of the Chimera Ant arc in the 2011 ver. but that should be enough of an indication to make the comparison.

The best thing in the world?
HxH 2011 plot material + HxH 1999 art style / animation / ost / video editing / voices / atmosphere / emotions.

First I watched 2011 and was very good, especially late Ant arc (my first true chills of excitement in this anime)
And now, after 1 year I'm watching 1999 version and... wooow... chills of excitement all the time, even when I know what's going to hapen. This is art.

Exactly the same goes to FMA 2003 and FMA:B 2009

The 1999 version definitely has more content than the 2011 remake (92 eps vs 75 to cover the same arcs).

More content means more good things, but also more useless things. 1999 filler episodes like 2 and 18-20 were significantly worse than the canon material. If all we cared about was having as much good as possible, despite the useless, we would be all reading visual novels instead of watching anime.

From what I saw so far, Episode 1 was the only one that shouldn't have been cut from the remake, but I can also understand the point of view of those who wouldn't like the simplification of 2011, after having watched the 1999 first.
