Genco Solicits Partners for Anime Adaptation of 'Pluto' Manga

At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which opened on Monday in France, anime production company Genco revealed plans for an adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's award-winning science fiction manga Pluto.

Pluto is based on Osamu Tezuka's Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) series, taking its title from a villain in one of its story arcs. It was serialized in Big Comic Original between 2003 and 2009 and has been published in eight compiled volumes. The series is published in North America by VIZ Media.

Genco is exhibiting a poster of Pluto at MIFA, a professional marketplace at the Annecy festival where producers can make project pitches as they seek partners for distribution and funding of animated works. The question of funding for an anime adaptation of Pluto previously surfaced at the 2012 Japan Expo in Paris, which Urasawa attended.

At the time, producer Masao Maruyama, who worked on the anime adaptation of Urasawa's Monster manga, indicated that securing funding for a complete adaptation of Pluto would be difficult because few companies today want to fund an extended production. Maruyama estimated that a complete adaptation of Pluto could approximately take 39 episodes, or three broadcast cours.

Crunchyroll reports that the solicitation for a Pluto anime indicates the project has an estimated completion date of 2020.

It's probably one of those anime meant for showing off to foreign fans for the Olympics.

Urasawa is one of my favourite mangaka and Pluto has been rumoured to be getting an adaption for years now, with several high profile industry people showing interest. I hope Murayama can get a hold of this for MAPPA, but I will watch it anyway - no matter what happens.

Fucking finally. It was either an anime adaptation or Universal and Illumination Entertainment was going to shit one out as a live action/CGI film. No, really, they have the rights to it. But it's been seven years, they might've forgotten about it (hopefully).

The waiting game begins...

Is it Madhouse or MAPPA.

>MAPPA it is, since they lack of budget these days and had no choice to but pick it within it's source material.

Genco?? I hope they won't give this to JC Staff like they usally do with most of their projects. actually they recently funded "In This Corner of the World" movie wich was animated by studio Mappa, so I hope they will give this to them as well. But maybe it's Madhouse after all, since every anime adaptation of Urasawa's mangas ever done before was animated by them.

No hype until they secure a studio. No guarantee they'll even find one it seems, but best case it can arrive before 2020.

OMG, so happy for this. I read the first three volume at a library since I had nothing good to do. I loved the manga (from what I've read) so I'm excited for the adaptation :D

Time for a 3 year wait...

I'm not the biggest fan of the author's work (which was Monster) but I'll keep on watching it sometime. But as for this itself. It will take a long ass while though. I might understand why though.

Hope it's not a slow motion adaption, because a 3 year-wait for a 39 eps based on a 8 volume-manga sucks.

Hope this actually happens instead of just a date like that. And sufficient episodes pls, the quality of the manga suffered a bit in the last third but a sci fi mystery setting like that will only blossom once animated. Fingers crossed.

No it's not. looks like this tweet doesn't provide any source, so I'll just assume that it was just based on an old interview with Maruyama

Edit: apparently Maruyama's newly established studio (Studio M2) will be doing it

If it is the case that M2 is doing it then I'm not too sure about this. I haven't read the source however when it comes to M2 they only did Onihei, and in terms of production it doesn't look too good either. Unless the staff is good enough then I'm not too sure about that.

I knew it would be M2, Maruyama left MAPPA a while ago and he's been fighting for a Pluto anime for years. Now whether or not M2 doing this is a good thing I don't know yet. Onihei didn't really look that good at all...But this is going to air in 2020. So they better make it look good by then. Still don't know why they'd announce it now, it'll make the wait even worse because I know it's actually happening. Ignorance really is bliss.

He's at the event.. I think he knows a lot better than ANN who got their info from Crucnhyroll.fr and other sites instead of getting it from a person directly there. He's the one who's been providing the pictures/leaks from the event such as the Mazinger Z camrip trailer plus what they said there and pictures, etc. Would take his word over ANN.

Also even adala-news (http://adala-news.fr/2017/06/lexcellent-manga-pluto-adapte-en-anime/) confirm what he tweeted. My bet is that it's a co-production between MAPPA and M2 though, due to M2 not being able to fund Pluto fully and needing the name and staff of MAPPA for sales due to them becoming well-know thanks to Yuri on Ice!!! as well as their animators and funding (even though he was president of MAPPA, he's still involved with them).
