Why did you think, when people tend to talk about bad animes, they pick the easy targets, instead of the real crap? It's maybe because it's more obscure, and most of them doesn't have any fandom, which make things less funny because there's no fanboys to make mad? Or because they didn't even know about those shows? What do you think about the shows called overrated or overhyped?

I think that people enjoy being contrarians, and ragging on things that people tend to like.

Funny, because I could say exactly the same about people advocating utter mediocrities as masterpieces with the energy of despair.

It depends...

For me, I'm not going to go out and defend an anime i personally would rate as a 5 or less, but there are a lot of anime that the general public sees as 6.5-7.5 that are actually hidden gems that should be counted as much higher.

I think in such cases it is worth advocating for these anime as it would be a shame for people to miss out on. we're all here to enjoy anime after all, garbage connoisseurs or not...

It's only fair that you add an option of "none of the above" (though that would likely outvote any other option...)

Elfen Lied.

Everyone who loves it was it when they were ~14-16 when they thought that anything mildly "dark" or had slightly more depth than Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh was some sort of deep masterpiece.

I don't have a problem with someone liking it or having nostalgia for it, but it's just not that good.

Except for the soundtrack. Elfen Lied's soundtrack is godlike.

Some of these I watched 10 years back when I was first getting into anime, and I look at them now and think: "Was this good or just violent?" Specifically thinking of Elfen Lied. I haven't watched it in years but I remember the sheer shock value was enough for me to rate it highly. I'm not sure I'd give it the same rating now. I'll probably watch it again sometime.
