Their really isn't anything scary; just little creepy parts. Like the real bloody scenes in Higurashi/Umineko.

Will definitely have to check out Ghost Hunt, sounds intriguing!
(or is it Ghost Hound?)
They both exist, but are completely different.

Also, something else I forgot to add; if Higurashi was real... then it would be one of the most terrifying things in existence, more so than a lot of other horror animes if they were real. (S2 (Kai) spoilers)

Thanks. I watched Ghost Hunt, and I have to admit, some scenes were pretty scary, the Bloodstained Labyrinth-arc in particular.

Okay don't judge me but "Mononoke" would have to be the creepiest I have seen. Don't be quick to judge this anime its rather creepy and weird... but thats how I like it (:

And then , although it doesnt have many parts that i would consider scary, Ghost Hunt. The doll episode was downright creeeeepy.

number of times the word creepy was used; 3-- no 4.

There's no such thing as a scary anime, though I'd be delighted to be proven wrong.

havnt seen many, but the one tht comes to mind is higurashi s1, only anime to ever actualy give me chills. like when he unlocks the door for rena, and she opens it fast as shit, with only the chain holding the door shut. irl movies the closest they come is making me jump by some unexpected seen but nvr felt any true horror from them. higurashi ws confusing but a masterpiece. looking for more horror anime atm.

No anime has ever gotten me to hide under the sheets. Well, one got really close though. Ghost Hunt in the middle of the night? Hot damn.

Fuyuki Ono's other work, Shiki, just isn't as scary but I dare say at lot more disturbing and provides more paranoia fuel.

I love her work.

I might be alone in this, but I've got to say Mononoke. Not so much the anime itself, but rather the character Ochou. She kind of creeps me out, especially the last few episodes of her.

That 8 years last post thread bump.

I don't find any horror anime scary or any anime with the attempt of scaring the viewer. But that scene in Higurashi definitely made me "oooooooof".

the promised neverland manga had some frightening scenes where I almost had a heart attack simply because a certain character bowed down to talk to someone.
Go read the One Punch Man manga please, this awful adaptation by JC Staff is a disgrace.

I haven’t. I’m not a horror fan and anime doesn’t do horror “well” anyway. Kiseijuu had decent body horror, but that’s more revolting/creepy than “scary”.

That one jump scare in Shiki got me freaked out for a few minutes.

The Corpse Party ONA and OVAs definitely have a creepy ambiance. I'd say it's the closest example of "Western horror" that I've seen in anime. The dark animation and creepy setting coupled with a soundtrack of laughing children sets the mood well, even if the anime as a whole wasn't very solid. (At least to me.) I liked the games more, but they scared me less.

Other than that, I've been pretty disappointed in the "horror" genre. It's a cultural difference, I suppose. If I need a spooky watch, I go for live-action, like Black Swan or It Follows. Those give me the most horror thrill.

Anime can't rely on the normal tricks of live action to scare people because it doesn't look like reality. Combinations of gore and music can still be unsettling to an extent but aren't actually scary so the closest I've come to being scared by anime is through psychological horror, Higurashi is the best example of that. There are other anime that I've found unsettling in a similar way, Shiki, Monster and a few others, but I've yet to see anything close to what Higurashi managed. Psychological fear feels very different to 'normal' fear so it doesn't really scratch the same itch but I prefer it as scaring the rational, thinking part of your brain takes a lot more work than scaring the reptilian brain so I appreciate it more.
