Most anime I've seen weren't actually classified as 'scary', but Chaos; Head did scare me a little, no idea why.

Cat Soup, scary and extremely disturbing.
Also the only few minutes of Oh! Super Milk Chan I've seen really scared me to death.

I must admit, I've never been properly freaked out by an anime.

But the scariest one I've seen has to be Ghost Hunt.
I mean, it doesn't seem like it's gonna be that creepy at the start, but some of the episodes shook me up.
Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that I watched it in bed while it was dark? Hmm. Anyways, it was still somewhat freaky. :')

Not sure what gore has to do with being scaried but each to their own.
Personally I don't think I get scaried by Films/TV Shows in the same way I don't believed I can be shocked by any Film/TV Shows

Tokyo Mew Mew scares the crap out of me :P

Aside from that, I'm not really scared or freaked out by anime per se, although Ghost Hound had some unnerving moments thanks to its more psychological approach (far more than Higurashi, which to be honest was pretty mediocre on the horror front).

Also, check out Hakaba Kitarou, which is one of the most underrated horrors in anime.

Honestly, Higurashi scared the shit out of me. O_O I refused to leave my computer before watching, like, FLCL or something to calm me down after watching the climax of some of the arcs. Like the nail scene... Still makes me shiver.

I thought Perfect Blue was pretty creepy.
Ghost Hunt had its moments too. Especially that with the bathtub.
Higurashi is pretty creepy too!

Lol.
Ghost hunt is one of the scariest anime out there
and the title of the anime already said it, it's Ghost Hunt for god sake, so why do you think that it's romance anime ????

I don't find that gore equals scary. I can't say I have been scared by an anime the same way I would by a horror video game but I would suggest Paranoia Agent and Boogiepop Phantom, Berserk (because it's ending actually was kinda scary), Hundred Stories aka Requiem from the Darkness.

Good horror anime is so hard to find! I'm hoping that the upcoming anime Shiki will fulfill that role though. Horror/supernatural is honestly the one genre I wish I could see more of in anime, but it's just never there, or not frightening at all. Most of the time it comes off as pretentious.

Yeah it actually was pretty freaky. The anime series, anyway, makes little mention of the craziness that's about to ensue at the end. The manga's pretty crazy to begin with, but with the series, that ending and the music especially...

To everyone who says they don't get scared; I recommend Perfect Blue.
I have never ever found a movie scary, (anime nor live action) but Perfect Blue truly freaked me out. It's not only scariest anime I've ever seen, but the scariest movie in general, or actually the only movie I've ever seen that was able to freak me out.

Ghost Hunt made me jump near the end
Nothing more than that though, since gore and blood bath seem to equal horror now.

There was one or two, both from the same series, about two sisters, who fight ghosts and evil demons, was pretty gory. I think there were two OVA's or something, can't remember the name. it had that wooden doll with the white face, and painted on black hair, which was held by a small girl, whose sister was murdered for not agreeing to marry some rich boy, she was hacked to death against a sacred tree or something. while her sister witnessed the murder, but before the sister was silenced as well, she was saved by the doll.

I think they were both Miko's at a temple, one had brown or auburn hair the other black long hair, I think tehy were both reincarnations of japanese gods or deities.

If anyone knows the name. Please tell me so I can add it to my list :P (I was 4 when I saw this ^_^)
