 Akko and friends....in their natural environment. OK....Akko is a big irritant who goes from episode to episode doing cringeworthy things and generally making a fool of herself. She thinks too highly of herself, and is obsessed with being a copycat of a previously great witch. Having got that negative energy out of the way....let's get down to business Despite all that, Akko is also the best character in this anime series....and we are going to see why. First, Akko is the character we all identify with, somehow. Because, when we start off in life, and everything is new, and we do not know how to do things properly, we naturally make mistakes. Now, some learn faster than others,others get discouraged and give up....and some just keep trying and trying... Like Akko. Akko is (in Potter-speak) a muggle. She knows nothing about magic, does not come from a family of magicians, does not even have any talent as a magician, and should not have even been admittied to Luna Nova in the first place (and she got in because the school was so cash strapped, they had to take in muggles as students). And boy does Akko make mistake after mistake, after mistake. Every time, Akko shows that she does not know the rules, that she does not know anything about even elementary magic, that she does not even know how to respect her magical elders....and that she is an easy mark for being teased. But despite all that she does not give up. And eventually, her mistakes are going to help her. Because, school is , to parphrase a quote from another anime, Days, a place ''where you are given an opportunity to make mistakes''. That is a lesson many of us don't get...and not just in school, but in life. THis life we live, it isn't our time to shine as brilliant lights.....no...it is our time to show off all our flaws in their glory....so that they can be corrected, and so that we do not make the same mistakes again And so that we can get some help in doing so. Like Akko....who now has the mysterious Ursula -sensei as her mentor....and who as a result, is slowly but surely becoming a great witch. All because....she was not afraid to make mistakes. I guess that is something that we all should think of, next time we get annoyed with Akko....because her cringeworthy errors are going to be her salvation. They make her realise that she is not perfect, that she is not good enough....and they make her seek out help to be better....and to stop comparing herself to the perfect ones...and to be what she can be. Hopefully.(I really wish she got rid of her Shiny Chariot obsession though..and became obseesed with being the great witch Atsuko Kagari..which is what she can do..really). So, a little less hate for Akko please. Trust her....she knows what she is doing. |
