Everyone I've talked to calls NGE either genius or pseudo-intellectual trash, but barely justify why. Can any actual
philosophy majors/buffs weigh in on this?
Your in the right hands. I consider myself a humanitarian freethinker.
NGE is "pseudo-intellectual trash" and now I will carefully explain to you why this is the case (teeth grinding).
Shinji has an existential live crisis. He mesures his selfworth by his usefulness for others.
So he fights evil monsters to get loved by anyone.
26 Episodes a 20minutes wastes your time till he came to the conclusion "He has a right to live on his own".
Theres no proper buildup for this, theres no plan, theres no scale, its a mess.
To make mathers worse its combinded with a story about robots fighting monsters,
which is more interesting than Shinjis Self-discovery - which tells you how inadiquate
the philosophical part is handled.
Nobody talks about shinjis brafe self-liberation - course you never see an actually changed for the better shinji.
The story just declares: "Hes healed now" and stops without ending.
It just confues a young mind with its unclear language, and therefore does mor harm.
Every movie from John Hughes does far more in less time.
The truth is: Live is meaningless, everybody is an idiot, cynism is our friend, so we can get old together.

the school of life has all of your answers friend
Its 13:00 in Germany.
I take a walk for 2 hours, like Immanuel Kant.
When I return, I want somebody to offer resistance to my intellect.
Then I will focus my thoughts like a laser.
This will be like sodom and gomorrah.
Anyone should burn in my brightness.
