Details on Spiritual Metaphor?

I only just recently discovered this anime classic because I am no anime expert and had it recommended to me by a friend who is.

This show contains some wonderful, deep spiritual metaphors and I am honestly astounded at how expertly everything is tied into a deeper occult subplot.

Almost every element in the show contains a spiritual counterpart or connection to something going on within realms accessible by astral and etheric projection.

However, I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what the beasts piloting gunmen represent. Are they representative of some of the powerful races that live in the upper realms? Even the first race?

Or are they representative of some mischievous and malevolent gods in the Shinto catalog of spirits? Are they representative of something from a realm that I haven't visited and don't have access to yet?

Or do they just represent some of the lower spirits (BEASTmen) who are able to take on powerful and formidable astral forms and I'm overthinking it?

Spoiler Alert: I haven't finished the series yet but my curiosity will not let this go.
