Great interview by the top yuri manga editors.
Yuri is being read and accepted more and more by the general audience and that will also lead to more anime adaptions.

If things will evolve like described in that interview, I really think it will be nice: avoiding to be bogged down into fan-servicy romances for too long like it happened for yaoi.

I start to feel sick of those manga where the sole content is "it's yuri!" (or yaoi) without any more substance than that. And I'm under the impression that the magazines dedicated to those genres (like Comic Yuri Hime) actually encourage that kind of useless and insipid manga. Those magazines are dedicated to yuri/yaoi, and thus that's all they'll give to you.

If yuri (and I hope yaoi too) manages to re-enter the generalists magazines, then maybe we'll see more manga with a basic substance (from comedy to horror, sci-fi to fantasy…or, I even, maybe: a good romance for once!) but with yuri or yaoi on top of it, like a flavor.

Well, I hope for it. One day, maybe~

I always was under the impression that Yuri and Yaoi were equal in terms of publishers, readers and adaptations. Is that not so?

Great article! I certainly hope we get more Yuri adaptations in the future. Maybe even a Bloom Into You adaptation :P

Can't believe "Strike Witches" was brought up as an example though smh...

Certainly not.

The two genres did appeared in manga at the same time, in the same category (shōjo), by the same group of authors. But after that, the evolution of the two genres took very different routes.
Like, for example, the first yaoi magazine, June, started in 1978, while the first yuri magazine, Yuri Shimai, started in 2003. Nowadays, there is only 2 or 3 yuri magazines, against dozens a yaoi magazines. In return, yuri is more regularly published in generalist magazines, and in all categories. Unlike yaoi which stay tied to female categories when published in generalist magazines, save the otokonoko sub-genre which manages to get into male categories.

This alone should shows how different the two markets are.

I'm little confused/disappointed/terrified. Only Strike witches & some horror manga was "different". Other was yuri at X chapter, "maybe yuri", cooking with yuri, wolf-ears yuri...

I hope there will be more yuri + other genres/tags/1gender/bisexuality/etc but this article doesn't give me too much hope.

Finally. We need more yuri anime. There's so few of it and so many yuri manga. I'm hoping more of the fantasy/sci-fi yuri gets adapted though because I'm kind of sick of the fact that 95% of the yuri anime available is slice-of-life schoogirl yuri. There's plenty of sci-fi/ fantasy yuri manga that are just waiting for an adaption.

To name a few that aren't adapter in anime:
— The Great™ Paros no Ken.
Mare might be a good candidate for an OAV.
Kurogane Pukapuka-tai.
— The Shitty™ Shitsurakuen.

Then you have light sci-fi/fantasy like Tonari no Robot, Ren'ai Idenshi XX or Honey Crush.

There have always been those target groups though.
But I feel it getting better again, since there has to be a high after a low, right?

And thanks @lady_freyja :)

Sure. Here' some that don't have anime adaptions:

Indigo Mermaids (Warning: This one is hentai! It does have a plot/storyline with it too though. It's not just straight up porn. It's about mermaids.)

Scarlet Flower (Yuri vampire one-shot)

Crimson Fantasy(Warning!: Another hentai with a plot story. One of the main characters is some kind of supernatural creature of some sort, but its kinda vague on exactly what she is. )

Nightmare Syndrome(Another vampire yuri oneshot.)

Testify( Vampire yuri oneshot again)

Vampire Girl( Last vampire yuri one-shot)

Zettai Shoujo Seiiki Amnesian (has same characters from Kannazuki no Miko anime, but its ecchi and the plot is kind of "meh". However, I'd just be happy to see another anime with Himeko and Chikane.

The following are ones I haven't read yet, but plan to read:

Alice (Basically a hentai Alice in Wonderland. What is it with Alice in Wonderland and lesbians? Did I miss something in the book? Lol. XD)

Alice Turn Back Clock (More lesbian Alice in Wonderland, but this one is a whole lot less naughty. It's sadly only a one-shot though.)

Angels' Wings (Sort of. It's about two girls pretending they are angels.)

Aoi Shiro: Kaeishou (demon folklore)

Betsukiss(Lesbian vampire)

Blue Line (Ghost girl)

Chirality (Andriods, Cybrogs, etc. It's ecchi and genderbender though.)

Epitaph (shinigami/ death god girls)

Gurenki (demon girl)

The Caged Miko and The Whimsical Witch (about a witch and a priestess)

Mare(Warning: Hentai! It does have a plot though. There's demons/monsters that the main character has to fight or something.)

Mikarun X (Ecchi series with aliens and monsters)

Mugen no Minamo ni (immortality and such)

Cat's Eye Hall (cat that leads to a supernatural shop. I haven't read it so I don't know for sure, but it kind of makes me think of a yuri version of xxxholic.)

Nekoroma (Nekomata/Japanese monster cats in cat-girl form)

Paros no Ken(medieval stuff)

Ragnarock City( aliens, robots, magic, etc.)

Renai Idenshi XX (Sci-fi story with all women world.)

Scape-God (monsters, a girl with goat horns, goddess, etc.)

Seishokuki(Ecchi. Plots sounds funny. Probably more of a parody manga. Aliens.)

Shishunki Seimeitai Vega(An alien who gets her powers through kissing)

Sweet Peach! (Uhhh...I'll just let the MAL summary do the talking for this one: "After becoming an adult, Kisaragi Touka is attacked by an evil blob of darkness. But it's alright because she is saved by her school nurse who is dressed like a maid, and a samurai girl with fox ears, who kisses her. She is then taken through a gate to another world where she is met by a hamster... who also kisses her.")

Tenshi no Shizuku(Warning: Hentai. It's about an angel and a demon and their um...encounters with each other.)

Tokimeki Mononoke Jogakkou (yokai, Japanese spirit creatures/monsters from folklore)

Transistor Venus (about a spy with special powers)

Tsuki ga Kirei desu ne(animal-ear people)

Vespa( Will use MAL summary again since it haven't read it and the summary is kind of vague: "Love story between a guard and her princess in a world with drastically reduced men.")

Renai idenshi xxx and honey crush are nice (fantasy afair). Honey crush have nice ghost theme and it's serious enough.
Shitsuraken... well, it's one of 2 or 3 yuri harem so... the other one is even worse, so... well, yeah.
... And how "porny" is Mare? I don't want to read porn for few lines of plot or something.

@caninesrock
Transistor Venus (about a spy with special powers)

It's just echi plus some "plot". It's not worth reading if you don't like comedy/echi because the plot is very small.

@Lawli-Pop

Fantasy:
Banana no nana: https://myanimelist.net/manga.php?id=20281&referer=malupdater Sadly, it was rushed. It shounen (fighting) manga
Mugen no Minamo ni (!): https://myanimelist.net/manga.php?id=30791&referer=malupdater Killing & "age stuff".
Gamma: https://myanimelist.net/manga.php?id=56057&referer=malupdater Hero organization, little bit of "incest" (it's nice kind of incest!!), superpowers etc

Sci-fi:
(light scifi or fantasy) Fragtime (!) https://myanimelist.net/manga.php?id=57401&referer=malupdater "time stuffs"
Murasakiiro no qualia (!): https://myanimelist.net/manga.php?id=51493&referer=malupdater First volume (afair) is little "fantasy-like" but it will have some nice science... It's hard to not spoil - Just read it!
Pure marionation https://myanimelist.net/manga.php?id=12630&referer=malupdater Android stuffs - so far, it's the best android title I've read/watched.

There are more but they are not so good (or I forgot about something).

It is a difficult manga.

By that I mean that Milk Morinaga started her career by doing porn, but drifted into moe romances that we know nowadays with Girl Friends & co.
Mare is in the middle ground, between porn and plot/romance. In that regards it is an interesting manga, if you like the author. And it's definitely not a "pure porn" work, there is enough plot/romance for making it interesting. (I don't like porn, so…)
But in my eyes it miserably fails at everything it tries: not a good porn, not a good romance and not a good plot.

And considering the plot, the "porn" is gorish rape with monsters/demons, not much erotic. In fact the porn could be considered as "heterosexual", it is the romance that is yuri. (EDIT: to be sure (it's an old read of mine…) I quickly skimmed the manga, and there is yuri porn too, 1/3 of it I'd say)

In the end, the romance is its weakest element by far, really really light and it is nowhere to be near her weakest romances manga, while the plot is interesting (if you like occult stuffs) but isn't developed enough.
Not being fan of porn, I felt its amount was sufficient.

Thus it is a "wasted potential" manga, lacking few more chapters in order to develop the romance and the plot.
If you like the author you should try it, or if you like ero-guro, otherwise I don't really see the point.

But I really think it could produce a good OAV if the studio try to overhaul it a little, to develop the romance/plot.

How much yuri is in Murasakiiro no Qualia, Gamma, and Banana no Nana? Is it canon stuff or just subext? The reason I'm asking if because they aren't tagged with yuri or shoujo ai tags and I want to know if they are worth reading just for the yuri.

I've only read Banana no Nana and the final chapter if nothing else definitely made it yuri. It's really something you gotta see because of how out of left field it was, which was due to an obvious cancellation.

Gamma I've seen that the author draws some pretty explicit yuri artwork of the characters so I'm guessing it is at least heavily implied.

Gamma have canon yuri and it's not only 1 relationship.
MnQ & BnN are about only 1 relationship (both canon).

The BnN is the simplest from the three mentioned mangas. I guess without whole "journey" and fights this manga doesn't have too much yuri (per amount not per quality). However, I think it's worth checking... it has 13 chapters after all!

And while MnQ & Gamma has a lot of yuri, if you cut non-yuri stuff you will miss a lot.
MnQ is very sci-fi. Gamma has interesting stuff about heroes (not only fights!!).

That's a generalization. Lol, yaoi is definitely far from a good genre for Japan to fall back on in terms of manga genres. It's rife with problems that have been addressed, but never get fixed. Yuri has always bee for "adult women", but times are changing and more people are reading and embracing Yuri because it is one of the most consistent types of genre that portrays LGBT+ couples and stories in a lighthearted and positive manner.
