Merry Christmas to all of you here on MAL and a Happy New Year :)

As an anime fan, Why do Japanese celebrate Christmas? As far as I know, Christianity is a minority religion in Japan. I just want to know the reason why. I'm curious :)

(FYI: I'm glad that non-Christians enjoy a Christian holiday. And in my country the Philippines, we also observe holidays that are Muslim-related to give respect to our Filipino Muslims and we enjoy it as well because there are no classes)

Is it the same reason that I mentioned above? To give respect to fellow Japanese Christians? I want to know. CURIOSITY I am full of.

Probably American influence, after all, we ran Japan until the 50s and gave them a lot of assistance in jump starting their economy again. A lot of their culture after WW2 was at least partly influenced by the US or Europe. Makes sense that they'd copy our holidays too.

Yeah as the prior person said it was pretty much a western influence. Like one of the more famous traditions in Japan is to have Chicken because KFC did a huge Christmas campaign at some point dressing up the Colonel as Santa saying it was like the meal of the season. It's also taken up the consumer aspect and somewhat turned into a romantic holiday, so it hardly has any religious ties whatsoever.

actually that part I think is just because of japanese modesty, not necessarily taken from 1940s-50s usa
"I like young-girl sexual creations, Lolicon is just one hobby of my many hobbies," he says.
I ask what his wife, standing nearby, thinks of his "hobby".
"She probably thinks no problem," he replies. "Because she loves young boys sexually interacting with each other."

Like others are saying, it is likely western influence - though I do believe it is celebrated in a secular fashion. The Japanese also have a holiday for many things, having had seventeen national holidays this year.

No, porn was censored since the Meiji era because the king/emperor was a huge western fan. Fuck him.
Religion is a parasite, and the only way to exterminate it is to accept facts that can be proven by regular every day activities.

Also, most Christians in Japan identify to be a kind of Catholic worshipper. I'm a half Japanese Catholic and we celebrate Christmas for the bandwagon and sales and shit.

I think it's a generational thing. Taiwan is the same way and at least my Vietnamese side of the family celebrates it as such. You'll see christmas trees in like malls in stuff but so few are actually Christian.. So there's no religious aspect to it but it's more for younger people as a "romantic" holiday equivalent to Valentine's day. So most younger people, millennials i mean, will celebrate it for the fun of it

Since the fall of Japan in WW2 Christians have gained a large foothold in the economic and political world of Japan, I suppose the allies thought they could trust people who at least followed the same God, combine this with the growing influence of American culture and you can see why they celebrate Christmas.

Christmas is now a global holiday celebrating the winter and, well, that's it. It got so popular that it was stripped of its original meaning. Then again, that happened to every holiday in history.

I've seen alot of anime where people get laid on christmas. So I'm guessing part of it is that. The other part is KFC.

Most its just western influences. I don't think there are many christians in Japan. Maybe like 1% if that and maybe that percentage only makes up foreigners who went to Japan. Maybe they did missionary work in Japan :p

That 1% has had over 8 prime ministers.

It's a western culture that they adopted, simply.
Many buddhists and people of many other religions celebrate it too. Chiristmas is more of a cultural holiday, and not a religious one.
Today they say you're crazy, tomorrow they will say you're a genious.

Christmas there is miserable, it's another Valentine's Day. Lots of people get left out in that version of Christmas. China's version is a lot better and pretty close to Western Christmas.

Not a whole lot of people in Japan are Christians. However, the secularized version of Christmas is quite popular, and Japan is no exception to that. It helps that there's a lot of cross-cultural exchange between the US and Japan.

Because they like to party, that's why. They aren't very religious despite being buddhists. They basically have holidays, ceremonies and traditions just because it gives them some time to have fun without caring too much about historical purposes.

honestly though, Japanese Christians aren't that common. It really is just 2 or 3%. It's just that most of the Christians in Japan are very wealthy, hence the stereotype of elite wealthy schools being overwhelmingly Christian.

The Japanese government has this weird dynamic where the two main types of successful politicians are either wealthy Christians or yakuza-backed nationalists like the current Shinzo Abe, who was photographed meeting with top level yakuza members in private.

Because Japan wants to have their cake and eat it too...

Sure, their pop culture is heavily influenced by Western culture...but they still want to be the "Far East".

Same thing for Christmas.

These HEATHENS don't believe in our Lord and Savior...they just want to be like the cool kids.
