Can someone explain to me why Nikolai Krasotkin and Alexei Karamazov had to die?

I don't get why they had to die, or what the point of them dying was?
I think that Alexei was trying to show Watson what the secret behind making a corpse with a soul was, but couldn't he have just told him? Is this why?
Nikolai Krasotkin seemed willing but I don't understand why. I really liked Nikolai Krasotkin, and I don't see meaning in his death.

It was explained by Burnaby that the two had received orders from Russia. They weren't going to "spare" them so they left their engineering in pieces.

I guess you could say that it made them despair on their situation.
