A Naruto and Boruto joint stage event at Jump Festa 2017 on Saturday has formally announced that a live-action film production based on the Naruto manga is in progress.

American entertainment news platform The Tracking Board reported in July 2015 that Hollywood media company Lionsgate had won the rights for the adaptation. Japanese entertainment news platform Eiga Natalie confirmed that Lionsgate holds distribution rights for the film.

The Jump Festa stage event also confirmed that commercials director Michael Gracey will helm production with the involvement of mangaka Masashi Kishimoto. Gracey is currently directing a biographical musical drama film depicting the life of American circus showman P. T. Barnum.

Screenwriters Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath from Teen Titans Go!, as well as Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair, are drafting a story based on the original manga. Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad and his son Ari are credited as producers for the film. Production also involves Zareh Nalbandian, chief executive of Australian animation and visual effects company Animal Logic.

Production art for the film (pictured) was revealed at the stage event. Cast information will be announced at a later date.

...But why? I can't wrap my head around this. I understand it because Naruto's huge in the west and they can make money off of it, but it's one of those stories that only caters to the die-hard fans, not one that can cater to a mass audience. I like that Hollywood is taking more risks with bringing anime to the masses, but this isn't one of those anime. Something like Monster, Paranoia Agent, Cowboy Bebop, or Trigun would do a hell of a lot better.

Dude, story in a nutshell is fucking Harry Potter. Of course it can appeal to mass audience.

This is definitely going to be shit. Super long manga/anime series like Naruto should just never be considered for live-action movies.

The only thing I'm going to look forward to is the cast, because I'll bet anything it'll be another "whitewashing" controversy, even though a vast majority of these characters (despite their Japanese-sounding names) don't look like they'd be played by Asians. Seriously, who looks at Naruto's blond hair and blue eyes and thinks "he HAS to be played by an Asian guy."

I'm sure this won't be an adaptation, They will just use the characters and the theme of Naruto, As if they could even adapt something like it in a movie.
Oh, well more Japanese property adapted by Hollywood is always welcome. After all Dragon Ball Evolution was just a test run.
Because technology was limited at that time. Heck, just looking at the trailer of Ghost in the Shell was fucking awesome.

EDIT: Lionsgate? Not sure if this gonna be good. If a co-production any of DreamWorks, Warner Bros, or maybe Marvel would surely be great.
Haters always gonna hate.

One thing I can say is thank god Kishimoto is actually involved in this.
The main reason for Dragonball Evolution's failure was because they didn't consult Akira Toriyama.

I read that Toriyama did provide input, but the producers just ignored him and didn't listen.

If they're truly adapting the entire story, the only possible way that I think they could possibly do that would be a trilogy... otherwise there is way too much content to fit into one movie. If it were a trilogy though, they probably would have announced it as a trilogy rather than the vague "live-action production", so I think we're out of luck. If they try to adapt the whole story into one movie then it will undoubtedly suck, but it would probably suck less if they make a new story that is loosely based on the original but just much shorter.

Movie 1: Pre-Timeskip
Movie 2: Shippuden up to Pain(Or maybe 5 Kage Summit?)
Movie 3: Post-Pain

Don't have any expectations for this, Well if it releases in theaters and it's available in my country I will go watch it but definitely not getting my hopes up for this at all. Don't really see how they can make an interesting and acceptable story out of such a huge series like Naruto in normal movie duration time.

Most probably will be a case of so bad that it's good.

Haha this is amazing. Got a no-name director, the writers of a bad Teen Titans Go, 2 other no-name writers, and the visual effects of Happy Feet. Avi Arad and his son are probably why this is being made since they're producers for Ghost in the Shell too.

You can see the whitewashing controversy already. This movie is going to be as bad as the future Death Note and Ghost in the Shell adaptations.

I have no idea how they're going to make this without making it look like the cringiest thing in the world. The setting, outfits, fighting moves, comedy, none of these things from the manga translate to live action and it's all 100% Japanese culture. People who do Naruto cosplay look ridiculous enough to me.

Yeah, that is all the matter in this movie. If they do not adapt that properly then it is therefore objectively a bad adaptation.
