Feel free to post what old school Anime you are currently watching, or if you've just completed one. Also feel free to post your opinion, but please try not to leave any spoilers for people who haven't seen the Anime you're talking about.

I'm not currently watching anything at the moment, but the last old school Anime I watched was "Dragon Fist." It was pretty good, but I wish it were longer.

Escaflowne...damn, 1996. A year out from the cutoff date. I guess then the most recent then is Uchuusen Sagittarius, which was a surprising watch. Pity not many people know about it.

Bubblegum Crisis is awesome. I love Kenichi Sonoda's character designs.

Now that I've downloaded it, I noticed it was "only" 720p. Still way better than the crappy Saint Seiya subs on Kissanime :D

I'm currently re-watching the Record of Lodoss War OVA and Utena with some folks that have never seen them before. Ofc, I haven't seen Lodoss since the 90's so it's kind of like watching for the first time. Both are a treat for entirely different reasons.

(I know Utena falls outside what you define as "Old School", but I consider anything from before the shift to digital animation, roughly pre-2000 as "Old School", so apologies)

I'm thinking of starting Kimagure Orange Road, but I've heard mixed reviews... If anyone could illuminate me on how it compares to say, Touch or Ikkoku, I'd love you forever.

Kimagure Orange Road is a great anime, my only grievance is the rushed ending, but thankfully there were the ovas and movies to bring closure to the series. Similar to Touch and Maison Ikkoku, you got likeable characters who get development, a love triangle, a good story, memorable moments, good comedy... I could go on. Go watch this anime and judge for yourself if its good or bad.

Ah, thanks. My only concern is pacing. Touch was great once it got the ball rolling, but Ikkoku seemed to bog down pretty bad in the middle, but I'm sure I was just burnt on the endless misunderstandings.
I truly appreciate the reply.

After watching so much bad new anime, I'm giving old anime another shot. This time I'll likely try watching more of Wolf's Rain. It's not OLD school (made only 14 years ago), but it's older than what most millennials are willing to watch.

I'm actually watching a fair number of them now:

Science Ninja Team Gatchaman
City Hunter 2
Galaxy Express 999 TV
Miss Machiko
Space Pirate Captain Harlock
Gunbuster
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Lupin the Third Part II
Devilman TV

I'll also be doing rewatches of Dominion Tank Police & Mobile Police Patlabor before too long as well.

I've also been watching the original dragon ball, and I'm planning for dominion to be the next show I start watching.

I'm also in a constant state of rewatching cipher the animation. It'll never not be the best.

Currently watching Maison Ikkoku, and I'm on episode 58. Definitely feeling burned out, but I'm persevering. I was originally thinking this would be a 10/10 anime in the first 30 or so episodes, so it's pretty disappointing. I'm just taking it slow now, two or three episodes a week.

A Japanese friend recommended it to me a couple of years ago and I enjoyed it. The OVAs are pretty good for the time period. The first two movies (directed by Mamoru Oshii) were really good. Oshii is a master of composing and framing really excellent shots and these movies were no exception.

I didn't know that, that's crazy. Would be cool if CR starts adding more older shows. Might give a reason to become a Premium Member again.

They might still have the original Space Pirate Captain Harlock from 1978, too. I watched that last year on Crunchyroll as well. I don't think it was as good as Galaxy Express and it was a bit cheesy and melodramatic at times but despite that it was very, very sincere and earnest. I give it a thumbs-up.

Now I’m watching it on TubiTV, meaning I can finally watch all of the anime

I just started Ashita no Joe. The animation bothers me far less than I thought it would. It's... pretty good so far, but I'm not super into it (yet).

Also Gundam Wing, if you consider it old-school. I'm starting to think I just really love Gundam in general.

Hi all, well as Im new here I dont know if there is a thread to introduce ourselves so I think its fairly right to say what Im wathing here as an introduction. I just finished watching Lets Nupu Nupu, its really funny anime, but you can see it as a collection of gags here and there, its 4 pannel origin clearly makes it like that but anyway its really good watch if you feel like you need to laugh without a deep plot or mysteries that never reveal, I need to find another one like this maybe you know of many. Additionally Im re-watching Bubblegum Crisis, but while Im a big fan of the 1st 8 episodes I dislike a bit the Crash part (3 episodes after the 8th) and the same probably for 2040, I think that as this anime was going to have 12 episodes and they almost cut it of and were about to not finish well they kind of merged everything from 8th and result feels kind of different to me, behaviours etc feel strange there, 2040 is alternate universe with same characters or at least their names remain but its different and to me Kenichi Sonoda style is a lot better than the one seen in 2040 where as far as I know he was off the company, if you are new to the series better stick with the first 8 episodes that have a great plot and character development and a great feeling to the whole universe portrayed and cyberpunk atmosphere, you know it feel like they put together a great work there to build this world, although it feels unfinished as its how it is.

It still holds it's own despite being over 20 years old.
Currently reading the manga and it's also as good as you may think it is.

It was a struggle. Really weird pacing, and it felt like it tried to do everything at once, but ended up not doing any of it very well.

It's because when it aired it was almost the only popular shounen, if you watched any shounen before it you won't find anything special. It aired in the 80's, the next gen of shounen were OP and Naruto.... almost 20 years later. The special thing about DB is that everyone got inspired by it's formula.

BTW, DB is not the first shounen but it made the genre popular.
