Seeing how Part 2 started, I wouldn't be surprised if the hypothetical Part 3 just ended up doing something completely different than what its setting up lmao

I was expecting the ending to hook Zero and Shirube back up after getting backing from the old man, in that way I thought part 2 would feel more unnecessary than it actually was. To not only do those, but deeply tie Zero's backer with Zaizen over a petty and personal grudge is smooth! We can already see how part three would have turned out.

As for my overall thoughts on part 2, I definitely enjoyed it more than part 1. One reason is that three major problems I had were done away with.

Problems
I understand that Zero selflessly carrying the incompetent on his back was central to his character and the themes the text pursued, when looking back on it I actually found it super cool. However, during the moment I still found the hordes of predictable idiots, or the Hiroshi and Yuuki's to be frustrating and boring!

Another problem was my pet peeve of fake stakes. Zero always won at the last second and it was presented as shocking but it was never shocking to me because Zero was never permitted to really lose.

The third problem was simply that the subject matter didn't appeal to me. It was too mathematical.

Solutions
Looking at those three issues, it should be clear that part 1 wasn't for me. Cast, stakes, and subject matter are three huge areas to take issue with. However, I did like the character's Suezaki and Itakura, I found myself waiting for more screen time from them. This part did away with the characters that I didn't enjoy and brought in the ones that felt far more lively. Beyond this, Junko, or honestly the entire family from the treasure hunt were not only a consistent presence which I could enjoy, but had many different sides to them! They were more interesting to me in that way. So clearly the cast issue was solved.

Instead of acting like Zero would lose when he never would, part 2 leaned into his winning streak. He played the cheesily cool role of the guy who always has it under control. Instead of asking will he? It asks how did he?(with style!) It's a slight difference but that relieves my issue with that writing style, there is no longer dissonance between the story/tone and the audience when it comes to stakes.

The subject matter was easy to follow this time around. Golf, poker, beer, and treasure hunts are far more fun to read than math equations for me at least. Like the cast issue, I don't think math is bad, part 1 was educational as hell and attempting to be inspirational for the youth! I respect that, I just don't enjoy it myself.

Closing Thoughts
Not to only compare, the treasure hunt itself was the most exciting part in all of Zero for me. The traveling and sightseeing was unique, the family flashbacks were profound and emotional, the characters were some of my favorites, and it felt like it could go anywhere. I, at least, was unsure if the old man would be alive or dead, if one person or the entire family were working together to keep him captive, or if he was pulling the strings all along and wasn't actually in danger.

So yeah, I would only go so far to say "I liked part 2", I don't mean to sing it immense praises, but I thought I would write out why I like it when I feel indifferent to part 1. I find the manner of which the two differed slightly yet changed my entire perception of the work interesting. Rather than being a difficult read at times, this one was smooth the entire way through, it just didn't take me that high.

And here I thought I was wrongly looking around, but it was just that it didn't even exist in the first place.
Damn.
Well... I suppose we'll never have the end of the story, but I enjoyed it for what it is anyway.

i thought that more games would be played in part 2 but it's all good

it all was set up for Zero to get the money backing he needs for his final bet

altho even when he mentioned that everyone loses eventually i just don't see him ever losing lol
