You will spoil yourself on the original story if you don't, because it deals with the historical events in Chaos;Head. There may be a lot you don't understand. However, it is supposed to be a mostly separate story yes.

well after watching the bad reviews about chaos;HEAd i don't think anyone should waste their time with and probably go with the current series.
i know it would spoil some fun but u have to deal with it

well, if its a new story, then NO... if not then YES! i also disliked Chaos;Head... because it wasnt my type, but still i watched it... but i suggest to watch in case it is not a new story... do IT!

There is a fan translation of the visual novel. It's not perfect and the save feature is broken during on chapter, but it's much better than the anime.

The game is quite good, but of course most people won't like it as much as S;G (imo mostly because Okarin is far more likeable than Takumi)

you can watch it any order but watch the prequel first to have a better understanding.
