The annoying sub-genre of Yaoi: the shoujo-yaoi!!

[I'll just state first that I'm totally against all sorts of inequality and sexism and all things bad. And I completly understand that everyone has their choices and likes and dislikes.
I don't speak for any man, gay or straight coz I don't really know about their opinion on this topic] I say yaoi manga specifically coz I don't read shounen-ai.

There are all sorts of yaoi sub-genres and seme and uke characters out there, but when I come across that specific shoujo-style shoujo-everything yaoi genre, I'm fine with it until I see the Uke!
No, there is nothing wrong with him. I think I just get a bit annoyed at the author (i.e. those female authors) to draw the guys pose like a girl EVERYTIME whether he is happy or angry or crying (which happens all the time) or during sex too (that comes with a flowery background by the way). An effeminate guy is totally fine, but what's with the poses!!
I get that it's fiction and an artist's right to express themselves however.

But sometimes I just feel "that's not how they all are." And I wonder if it's unfair for gay men to be described like that. I've read mangas where it literally felt like they took a regular boy-girl romance and just erased the girls boobs and hair. Literally! And then I think "girls aren't dumb enough to believe that's what happens for real rite........or are they?" I can't even dare go near a shounen-ai 😱

Well, I was just wondering, if any of you felt the same bit annoyance I feel?
Can't just be me rite...... (T_T).......or is it.....

Someones got to be the submissive bottom of the pair and lots of gay relationships have one strong type and one effeminate type. Love stage was amazing and he practically looked like a girl except where it actually counts.

okay
but

It's not like the cute anime girls and generic moe blobs really have counterparts in real life who act like that either. Anime is full of exaggerations, cartoons in general, it comes with the medium as there's not extra work to have your show stray from reality.

It's purposely made that way so that girls (mostly teenage) can relate to feminine guy and picture themselfs with another 'strong' guy. Such stories are not in any way a real representation of homosexual relationships. It's just a romantic fantasy of a female author for female audience.
You may ask why not watch just a heterosexual shoujo then? Well, because the same story about guy and girl can seem too unbelievable whereas relashionship between guys can be as perfect as you wish, there is no way to check for yourself if you are a girl.

Haven't watched Love Stage but there doesn't have to be a bottom and a top, people can switch.. this is kinda ignored in yaoi manga. You don't have to own specific, effeminate traits or be 'submissive' to be a bottom and vice versa. What I mean is, they don't have to fit in archetypes.
Writing gay relationships between two men and making one of them more effeminate just to make him like ''the woman'' of the relationship is damaging and homophobic. Not every relationship has to resemble to one between heterosexuals, people and relationships can be all shades of everything.

Yeah, I always feel really annoyed at ecchi-harem anime not only because it degrades women (for obvious reasons), but also because it degrades young males (by making them mostly braindead), as well as the overall audience (by making them out to be perverts that only care about some boobs and butt, which may or may not be true).
Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you.

Well I was with you right up until you said that the depiction is homophobic. Just because someone writes their preferred type of gay pairing doesn't make them homophobic. That doesn't even make sense. I hate gays so im going to write homosexuals having sex for my enjoyment. Its their fictional characters to do with as they please like any pairing straight or gay its up to the audience to decide which types they prefer or enjoy.

I personally prefer and enjoy those types of pairings compared to two people who are both around the same types. Or masculine X masculine. Yes people CAN be all shades of everything but fiction doesn't have to represent everything or be phobic. Authors are allowed to choose their depictions otherwise. Every character has to represent everyone and nobody is allowed to depict anyone. Nothing can be universal its up to a viewer to seek out what they enjoy seeing rather than a writer expected to write the ultimate gay couple that somehow represents everyone.

Another "Am I the only one?" thread on mal.
OT: Most gay manga are made by females, so that just might be the case. You should read bara manga if you can't handle girly ukes.

Sorry, what I meant to say was that thinking that every gay relationship has to be like that is homophobic. You're right, authors are free to create whatever they like and make the characters however they want but if almost all of them want to make one character effeminate and depict the other as the 'man' of the relationship, that can be quite damaging and maybe create homophobic tendencies. For example, how many people (men and women, but I feel especially straight men) believe that gay people are typically flamboyant and effeminate? A lot. And then they make fun of them as if being into men diminishes their manhood or some shit. So yeah you're right that everyone is entitled to writing and reading whatever they like, but I believe that if other types of relationships are ignored, and this specific type is the only one that is written or gets any attention, then many fans may falsely perceive this as the norm.

You must have a nice life if you're able to put this much time and effort into being this upset over it. It's not really supposed to represent gay relationships but likely reflects general attitudes about balance.

But if you have more than two you can eventually chain them together so everyone is a top and bottom.

Damn it man we're not stacking frogs here....The logistics alone....
Such a stacking is surely a crime against humanity.

I guess many of you are trying to explain why such yaoi is the way it is and I appreciate that πŸ˜πŸ˜€ though I already know and understand why. Like @Bowie said - this is an "Am I the only one?" thread πŸ˜€

@traed YOU must have a nice life if you're able to put this much time and effort into being this upset over me having a nice life and putting this much time and effort into being upset over this 😝

@Bowie when I said there are all sorts of sub-genre, that meant, I have read different types of yaoi.... including bara πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ it's just that while I'm scrolling through yaois randomly to read or searching something with a particular plot, the maximum ones that show up are girly ones

@CatSoul I did not know that! Thanks for the recommendation πŸ˜‰

BL and yaoi are abstract genres, that don't really show gay romance, it's like "lesbians" in porn for guys. Bara is for and about gays, as far as I know.
Maybe the genre would've really won with more sanity, but it ain't gonna happen, so find solace in variety or something.

Gay manga made for gay men is called "bara" and therefore is a genre separate from yaoi. There are some josei yaoi, although very few manga on MAL have both tags. Not many yaoi manga have the shoujo tag either, but most yaoi manga are targeted for that age range.

It's pointless to get offended at that considering these yaoi aren't even seriously attempting to do anything other than make the readers horny.

Even bara is pretty terrible if you're looking for a realistic portrayal. Bara generally just has beefy guys doing the same things.

Uhm . . . I'm pretty sure 99% of Yaoi is not "accurate to gay men", not just "a few", then again, that isn't really what the demographic wants. Go read "Bara" if you want things targeted towards actual gay men.

Just going to point out that shoujo is a term used to describe a demographic, in this case girls . . . As you can imagine, most yaoi is targeting girls, i.e. the vast majority of yaoi is Shoujo yaoi.

Female yaoi writers write the yaoi with effeminate guys.
Guy yaoi writers write bara.
Of course there are more female writers than male ones.

It's what gets the money rolling in. I don't know many girls who like bara.

These "effeminate guys" that a fujo writer portrays freak the shit out of me. I'll immediately give a 1 if i happen to watch that kind of a show.

i love normal shoujo stuff though.

@YaoiMaster I don't know about others, but I'm pretty fine with Bara, although I don't prefer it first. I guess for girls, the characters can be a bit too beefy to like, but I've come accross bara with good stories so it was good. But I would definitely prefer it over this shoujo-yaoi!

@Ryo_Misaki hahaha true normal shoujo or shoujo smut is better than yaoi shoujo. And what if you liked the story and all πŸ˜‚ Would it get a 3 atleast?

Well, if the characters are not annoying or unnatural, the show can get a 3 or even higher score. but it is very rare for a yaoi shoujo to be that way, i suppose.
