With a great art style and a nice staff on board for this project, great animation and gore this anime tries toooooooooo hard to be Hellsing. Am I the only one who thinks that comedy is extremely forced here?

It's gotten a couple chuckles out of me.
I think half of the jokes so far is poking fun to historical references from banter between the three warriors from different periods of Japan, which the average viewer outside of Japan wouldn't necessarily be able to relate to.

The abrupt transition from serious to humor can be weird and seem "forced" I guess. But I'd say they're taking advantage of the absurd plot that has been placed by seemingly putting random historical figures into a parallel fantasy world. Like Joan of Arc being a pyromaniac because she got burned as a witch, that's absurd and hilarious!

Being overly edgy, like Hellsing, would've made it less entertaining for me.
I wouldn't say this anime is trying very hard to be Hellsing either, the animation is just very similar because it is some of the same staff doing this after all.

Comedy is a bit annoying. But still tolerable. I'd prefer if there was more screentime for the other Drifters with non-japanese background. (I guess they'll soon progress the story to a point where they will get more screentime.)

This should at least get a bit more different types of jokes with the different chars then.

I do kinda think that comedy is sometimes out of place, it does ruin the mood in a few occasions, but I wouldn't call it extremely forced. I think that's just Hirano trying to lighten the mood in an already dark anime.

Yes, the comedy is absolutely atrocious. But it honestly wouldn't be that much better, because the characters are bad as well, but the gags make them even worse.

It's a shame since it's aesthetically pretty good.

Well it does ruin the mood, especially when the artstyle changes to look simplistic (probably to save the budget).
There are however a few funny moments, like that guy in the aircraft, he's just so fun to watch.
For me the pacing is ruining it more than the comedy, episode 3 was a bit confusing, a huge cast of characters appeared out of nowhere in the middle of a fight, I had to rewatch most of the episode to tell who's on whose side!

Agreed. As far as I seen, the comedy in it were not even funny. . .

I'm caught between deciding if the humour is awkward because the series is too dark for it or that is the actual appeal of the comedy in that its not what you would expect

The Comedy is absolutely perfect balance for this show. Without it the fanbase would grow into huge retarded bunch like it happened with Erased and Re:Zero.

The historical jokes are pretty great imo, and certainly funnier than the out-there and almost complete randomness of what we got in Hellsing.

Some people seem to dismiss the light-hearted aspects when they are actually so important to rounding out Drifters and the drifters themselves. Without the self-awareness carried in the zany absurdity and Hirano's bombastic irreverential reverence for history, Drifters would simply be a perversely violent conquest-isekai wish-fulfillment. And god knows there's enough fantasy, preachiness, and militaristic war anime to go around.

But as for this issue people have with the comedy itself, I do think it's a fair enough complaint as the anime has done a pretty poor job of transitioning and pacing the joke segments. That said, I think the anime has been poorly paced and weakly presented in general, so who cares what this sourcefag thinks.

To me, the comedy is not bad and is necessary in settings with a heavier darker tone and gore. It is actually a literary device called comic relief and while they do not transition into well at times it is usually placed after something heavy in this anime and that is where it is supposed to be. The transition is the main problem as you can lead into it for pacing purposes and instead, they just throw it in right after a scene which could bother some people.

To sum it up the fact that you relate it to trying to hard to be another anime is comical in itself since comic relief has been around centuries dating back to Shakespeare. The feeling forced is a simple way to state transitioning issues which I can agree with you there.

The starting comedy was sick in a bad way, but those historical interactions between people who are 200 and 2000 years apart are genious.

While I dislike most of the comedy, nothing beats the unbearable historical references. Like seriously, you expect me to know anything about anyone other than Nobunaga and the Joan of Arc bitch? I get that they're trying to appeal to the Japanese audience, but have some consideration for us foreigners watching it illegally please, lol.

Gorgeus art style tho. And Nobunaga is def GOAT

I think the jokes work in the show but it does steer the story away from the full-on bloodbath violence which I'm sure is what the producers are hoping for.

As a person who dislikes humour and comedy, and cannot understand jokes – Drifters nails it for me. But that also comes from a person whose favourite title of all-time is Hellsing Ultimate.

It has slightly improved recently, but it's still really bad and tonally jarring compared to everything else in the show. And no, I don't care if that's the author's style: it sure as hell doesn't mean it's good and to me reflects negatively on him as a writer.

It is quite good actually, it gives the manga/anime another fell than just the gore and serious thing.
It gives a grotesque and absurd feeling to it, ofc you can't always understand it because of historical references but hey, still ok.

not like it worked better it was way less used on there and usually only on the brief calmer moments of the series
