Me and my friend were arguing on what anime is. I feel like anime are cartoons inspired by Japanese animation techniques or culture, like avatar the last air bender, Batman the Animated Series and Samurai Jack

Avatar with clear strong anime influence as far character designs and animation style

Samurai Jack through Samurai and Japanese culture, the animation it self is meant to look like an old Japanese painting

And Batman the animated series because it was actually animated by a Japanese studio and there are many Japanese animators that actually had a big role in directing certain episodes

I dont get why people make such a big deal about what's anime and what's not. Anime is simply short for animation because they don't have a word for cartoon. So technically all cartoons are also anime in the eyes of the Japanese.

No, it was created by Americans for American audiences, influenced doesn't make something a part of the specific subsection of animation. To do a more extreme comparison it would be like saying Kill Bill is a Japanese film because there is a portion heavily inspired by samurai and Japanese settings.

Never heard of a new series and Samurai Jack proves that episodic action cartoons can be well-done. I'd like to see action anime in episodic format, but the same league as Samurai Jack.

Anime in Japan refers to anything animated... So even Family Guy would be called anime

But in the "Anime" world, no its a western Cartoon

Anime is just a term for Japanese animation, so no, Samurai Jack isn't an anime.

depend what definition you use... if you using anime literaly with it definition... sure it does, because anime is just another word for cartoon... it mean anything in animated form...

if we use MAL definition of anime, no it;s not... since MAL identify anime is animation made by some east asian people that some part of it made in east asia that east asia listed as it primary distribution...

Not anime. Heavily influenced by anime though.

I actually admire how MAL refuses to consider RWBY, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and now Samurai Jack as anime. Hummingbird does though, a little. I mean it is in the Hummingbird database.

In Japan, the Word “Anime” is just a lend word from the American word Animation and describes any form of traditional or computer generated animation regardless of its origin. So Japanese people will call any Animation, even American ones, Anime.
