Honestly, the one-shot seems too short, and the manga series seems too long for a movie, so iunno what to think.

Manga bruh. They didn't adapt some parts of the manga.

I would say both. The pacing of the introduction was more similar to the one-shot, while the rest of the movie took bits and pieces from the manga to form the complete (or incomplete) picture.

It's from the Manga in 7 volumes. It's not a simply abridged version but the essence are taken out and pieced together as the director, scriptwriter, and the KyoAni team saw it. There is not even one scene which is an exact duplicate of the manga, but overall it feels like a very faithful adaptation of the manga.

What might be in conflict with the spirit of the manga was carefully avoided, I think, by referring to the manga. This might have been ensured by the director even bringing in the manga to the recording room of the voice actors to refer whenever any doubts occurred (which can be seen on the TV documentary on YouTube; she has the 7 volumes of the manga piled near her).
