Okay my 2 cents for all they are worth:

First of all Zeke's betrayal - it doesn't really feel like one.

Honestly my first thought was - he was instructed to betray them to get the Mare's trust and gain the titan shifter powers.

Pure speculation - all Eldians have some sort of titan stuff in their genes that potentially allows them to become titans, but not titan shifters. That's why the other nation claims they are bad of blood - they can transform into mindless weapons that kill humans in a pinch (of course with the added cost of staying mindless killing machines for ever and having to be put down by your friends/family - great power great responsibility yada yada)

From what the chapter tells us - 7 of the shifter powers are in the Mare's control, but I don't think it's Mares people who control them - they probably kindapped/brainwashed Eldian children durring or prior their rebellion against Fritz and company, preparing them as vessels for the shifter powers, which they then stole.

Now it feels as though they are up to their old tactics again - since the people of Mare can't use the shifter powers themselves, they rely on the Eldian children - they will indoctrinate them, test them and find out which of them CAN actually become shifters (if not all..or which of them are the most loyal of the bunch)

Then they will send trained, loyal, brainwashed soldiers like Annie, Bert and Rein to try and extract the coordinate without causing a war and triggering the titan wall's attack which will supposedly destroy the world.

This is kind of backed up on why the Eldians weren't all just killed off after the war - the people of Mare need to control them, and reeducated them to back their cause.

In the end I think all Eldians can be transformed into mindless titans and all mindless titans, if fed a titan shifter, will become shifters themselves. That would explain why Zeke betrays his parents - if the Mares are holding a competition of sorts, among the recruits the two qualities they would be looking for are:

Loyalty and Physical strength/endurance. And what screams loyalty more than betraying your own kin? I'm fairly sure Grisha had this orchestrated so his son actually gets the titan shifter powers.

One place where my theory falls flat on its face, now that I think about it - is the fact that Annie, Bernie and Rein were working together with the Beast titan.

Anyway I kindda liked the chapter.

Still the overall plot feels a bit wonky. I think that there was a place where the general plot was theorycrafted more or less accurately (the whole time travel, repeating groundhog day style thing, with the "Your hair… it’s gotten longer, hasn’t it?" in the first chapter) and the author is trying to figure out another ending/plot as he goes.

Nah, there is far too many foreshadowing to make such a statement. The part where the titan said "Ymir's people back in chapter 18.5, the fact that someone name Ymir, the ackerman stuff, blood line.

I'm sure that part will be explain, also the first chapter tittle, " to you 2000 years from now is making sense now. Not to mention this http://www1.mangafever.me/Read/Shingeki_No_Kyojin_1_5#gohere with persons moving inside the walls.

I would recommend you reread the series it willmake you realise this was all planned from the beginning, the puzzle is slowly coming together.

It is indeed a very mind-blowing chapter. So much information to process.
Right now, i'm confused who's bad and who's good here. Every party has their own reason for their action. I like Hajime sensei create a storyline in which no one's really pure or innocent. I like how Hajime sensei wrap the mysteries and twist and then reveal it. Makes the readers always wonder how's the story gonna be.

I hope in next chapter they gonna reveal some information about Ymir. I always have a feeling she's not an ordinary titan based on her name and her ability to understand old languange.

My biggest disappointment is i have to wait for one month for next chapter. T_T

So Bertholdt, Annie, Reiner & Ymir are some of the chosen ones to take out the Eldians is what I got out of the chapter. And it seems Zeke must be the head of their crew. I really feel bad for Grisha pretty naive to think that the Marleyans wouldn't brain wash his kid.

What if someone (a regular Titan or a Shifter) ate all of the Titan Shifters, wouldn't he become just like the original Titan they speak of in this chapter?

Jyuubi in SnK confirmed!

Seriously though, this is a pretty interesting thought.

Zeke seems less a Mare sympathizer and more that he ws pretty much giving his parents the finger for basically trying to use him as a puppet. Zeke most likely has his own agenda.

Fantastic chapter!! I'm gonna need to calm down so I can read it properly but damn. I wonder what Eren and co will actually do now. There's still so much that needs filling in but all the pieces are coming together. It's so weird finding out the truth of the world.

Alright. I dunno about any other theories, but this island has to be one huge-ass island. Wall Maria is about 480km away from the center of the landmass surrounded by walls, which means the size is ~723k km^2. By comparison, the entire country of Turkey is sitting at 780k km^2.

Also, the island has to be even larger than that, since no single person living there has seen the ocean. and the view has to be pretty good on a 50m-high wall. Assuming this planet is about the same size as ours, from 50m up, the horizon is 25km away, so the island has to be at least 505km radius, thus giving us ~800k km^2. And that's MINIMUM size assuming the island is a perfect circle, which we know it is not.

Btw, for those ppl thinking this island is Madagascar, the surface area of Madagascar is 587k km^2.

That's gotta be a big-ass island jeezus.

Well I wasn't expecting Big Zeke to be Erens brother. Going on similarities I thought he'd be Grishas (possibly jealous of his medical success and popularity?) brother - Erens uncle.
I guess we now know where the walls are in the world. I guess the government gave Zeke the power to create Titans? Afaik Eren still has the original Kings Titan power doesn't he? Zeke makes them, Eren controls them.

Eren must feel like crap knowing that he's related to the "enemy."

Also, how come Eren had to be injected with a serum to turn into a Titan?

Damn with all the information in the comments.. Yes they said that these people of Eldian will be sent to Paladis to roam the island as Titans and so they did ( as they resemble Titans seen in some arc ) But Grisha somehow made it Inside the walls ??

Also I just got to know that Zeke is a beast Titan. Where did we get that information because I think i missed it somewhere or wasn't paying enough attention.

Haha this is what I was thinking! Zeke ruined it all! I guess he got brainwashed when getting trained to become a warrior.

But man, I never expected the truth of the world to be like this. Honestly, this blew my expectations out of the water. I was expecting some type of science experienment or something like The Village, but this was WAY better.

It just makes so much more sense with all these relevations. The Titan powers, king Fritz isolating himself, why Eren's father was so motivated and eager to take the God Titan's power, why the warriors attacked the walls, etc etc.

I'm really looking forward to watching the second season and picking up on all the cues and hints that I didn't notice when I first read it.

After the mild disapointment of the end of the last chapter as I thought that was the point the plot would star getting shitty, and not really looking forward to this chapter, I can only say that after reading this chapter, I read it again and began the search for my brain because, honestly, my mind was blown away. The elitists say that the theme on which SnK was based upon would make any story enjoyable. After this, I say NO.

A vastly interesting story with a skillful narrative that never made you too confused. Mind boggling revelations, and a thrilling yet sad end that made me demand more. This chapter truly was a masterpiece among a masterpiece.

I can already see many people disagreeing, even if slightly, but this is my honest sarcasm free opinion about this masterpiece of a chapter.

I think Zeke looks old because he is hairy, not because he is all that old. Should be in his 20s.
Not necessarily.

As far as we know there's no information as to how much time has actually passed between the moment Grisha and his clique were turned into mindless titans/condemned to roam Paradis Island for all eternity and the moment Grisha actually ate a shifter/turned back into a human. However, we do know that people trapped within mindless titans can survive for many of years without aging; Ymir herself, by her own account, remembers wandering for a whole sixty years before stumbling upon Bert, Reiner and Marcel and eating the latter.

For all we know a whole decade, or maybe even twenty years could've passed before Grisha became human again and was discovered by Keith.

And for some reason SnK manga rating is 8.5 ..

Yeah I feel like it's kinda underrated. Maybe the art is not good enough? But HXH manga art is horrible and it's rated high.
Gintama is the same. The anime is sucking 50% of MAL top 10 (11 actually) and the manga is rated 8.37... I know Gintama's animation is phenomenal but still the deficit is kinda huge.

- 8.5
- Underrated
What? Lol.
Why is it that no one on this site is able to use a proper rating scale, anything above 5 is fine, anything around an 8 is instant classic, and a 10 is unparalleled storytelling both narratively and thematically.
What set this mentality that anything under a 7/10 is garbage.

This suddently started to feel like another manga. So titans went from experiments to magic!?! I feel like this world building is way too late in the story, like it's been 86 chapters since the beginning and we're now getting it!
And another thing. All what is happening eight now happened in the outside world right? When did this happen? I think I missed some information. Why are people inside the walls not remembering their story? Why are hose outside the walls, which can turn into titans, trying to kill them? JUST WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!? I hope the mangaka tells us in the next chapters...

Don't take the magic thing and the devil thing literally. Also re read chapter 64, on why people inside the walls can't remember their story.

also, reread chapter 86. Also where did you read that chapter from? Since some siye has the chapter with bad translation and missing pages. Maybe a re read of the entire series will make everything clear to you.

Well I guess obviously we the readers should be on Eren aka Eldians' side bc more than probably Zeke Annie etc all have been mind washed into killing their own people. I don't know about others but I'm definitely with the Eldians here

Lately, Shingeki no Kyojin has felt like a shell of its former self in a lot of ways and this chapter cemented those feelings for me. After years of waiting to see what was in the basement... to think it was a backstory talking about devil magic. If I knew then what I know now I would've told myself to just stop reading. Unfortunately, I'm now too invested to stop. May as well see what this tire fire looks like a few chapters from now.

Devil magic that should'nt be taken literally smh, also that bullshit was made up by the Marley government in favour of themself, think of it as a bible. Let me spell it out for you, we still haven't learn the true origin of the titans, though I suspect there is some truth in Grisha story, but Grisha don't know shit as well. So that's a pretty premature statement to make. The narrator is unreliable, take everything with a big grain of salt. The only things we can believe is that where the survey corps live is on a island, and the Marley discrimination against the Eldian ect

But hey, if you don't like the direction it's going that's fine. One thing though, no one can call this new direction asspul, since this all has been foreshadowed early on in the series.

Hi first comment here, non english speaker .

I agree with some people here not to take the devil thing literally, since it is Marley propaganda to keep Eldians at bay.

The quadruped titan can't be a shifter, but more an special titan that obeys orders. Shitfers have unique abilities and this one is kind of sad/pathetic.

I can't be the only person realising that there are ONLY 9 members of the survey corps left. They were hundreds, what are they gonna do?
This is keeping me more than it should, it worries me a lot. They are the wings of freedom in so many ways to the Eldians inside the walls, and now they are 9...

I loved the idea of the Marleyans turning Eldians into Titans to eat alive their own kind; even more using their own children to be loyal killing machines. Is the kind of calculated drama this series needed at this point. Well played.

And now I wonder if Zoe will explain everything to the authorities or if she will consider there are things that should not be revealed, since there are a lot close minded people amongst the new order inside the walls (after king fritz and reiss arch)

Don't know if I made up myself but I kind of remember someone saying(from the manga itself) that the royal family,The Frizt family were to live inside the walls under the Reiss name, as a fake noble family, to keep their identities. I don't understand why some of you are confused between the two families. Fritz are the real royal family, as Grisha's books state, and they were to live under the Reiss name, to keep their true identies. They put a fake king Fritz and that's all folks. If they weren't the royal family then why they have "the first king memories?". It wouldn't make sense.

And please, READ the manga carefully, don't just give it a glance, then you would actually understand what is it saying. It's hard to see so many posts of people misunderstanding things clearly explained.

EDIT: what also bothers me is the fact that inside the walls there IS THE technology to manipulate Titan Serum. I can't remember the chapter where Reiss wants to turn Historia into a titan but he tells that he has "chosen a powerful titan type for historia" to avoid another massacre like the one Grisha did to his family. So, not only there is the tech to manipulate the serum but it is possible to choose among different types. Also, where did grisha got the serum he injected to Eren? From the reiss church?? Maybe, but there has to be people who knows how the serum works and how to work with it.

Go easy on my grammar mistakes!

I also noticed the 1820+80+100 thing.

I want to see a legit detailed flashback of when ymir made a deal with the devil.
It sorta has similarities to garden eden.
Im guessing the devil is the snake, the apple is the serum the snake gives. And ymir is eden
But probably remixed beyond recognition as to not be an exact copy.
And 2000 years ago is jesus ish times.
Maybe the devil is a jesus type character.

WOW WOW WOW this chapter was absolutely AMAZING. Mind bloooooown! I knew Isayama was a writing genius but this surpassed all my expectations. I currently have SNK rated with a 9 but if the next chapters develops as great as I'm thinking it will get a 10, just as Berserk, my top rated.

The backstory of Grisha and the 2 nations confrontated and all the revelations about the origin of the titans were very interesting and well thought. The world-building is great.

We finally get the answer about the meaning of the chap. 1 called "To you in 2000 years" and why RBA + Beast Titan are attacking the humanity. Also it's incredible that the revolutionary Eldians were some of the titans that attacked humanity on Trost, like the smiling titan being Grisha's first wife and also this funny guy. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FlCjC6-DSUU/U1X5twLrLQI/AAAAAAAAAlY/YkCXSsCzoOY/s1600/Attack+On+Titan+Episode+creepy.jpg

Who would have thought that after 20 volumes our protagonists were not alone in the world since the start and were just locked in an island? (yeah there were some hints already since chapters ago but still) There's so much potential in the story from now on, I hope Isayama will take his time and will make our protagonists to take part in the outside of the world.

I could see SNK lasting for about 10-15 volumes more, there is so much to be told and to happen.

I really can't wait to re-watch s1 and the new s2 with my brother (who doesn't read the manga) to see his reaction to everything that has happened until now.

I realize you're probably caught up and already know a lot more than me, but anyway for me at this point... I don't think it works that way. It crossed my mind too but if this was the case then Frieda would've looked the same as her father. At the very least I don't think physical appearance is a determining factor at all.

Also, we clearly saw that Ymir's titan is identical to when she ate Reiner/Bertholt's friend. That's how they recognized her to begin with.

And Reiner implied that hardening was a skill that he "learned", so he's probably just putting that armor all over himself manually. When the beast titan broke his face it showed that he just had a normal face underneath the shell. Meaning I don't think he's just naturally an "armored titan".

I think the particular injection might have something to do with appearance though, because Historia's father said he was going to give her the "best titan made for fighting" or something along those lines. But I think whatever they look like might just be the same.

But I guess the final determining factor will be if Armin looks like the titan he first transformed into or like the Colossal titan.

Wow…my heart feels heavy right now. It’s sad that both sides suffer. The non-Marleyan Eldians suffer, because of their ancestors’ genocide to the Marleyans and dominance many years ago… Remembering what their ancestors experienced, it makes sense for the Marleyans to treat the Eldians on their land cruelly. It’s sad that the cycle of hatred never ends... The Eldians that the Fritz King abandoned…did he leave them because space behind the walls were limited? I doubt all of the Eldians chose to stay on Marleyan land, like Dina Fritz (Grisha’s first wife).

It’s tragic that Faye was killed by the men from the Marley Public Security Authorities. When the man who beat up Grisha told him to stay, and watch the airship…he knew Faye was being killed. It’s cruel, because Grisha and Faye were just young children, who chose to take a walk. Grisha definitely couldn’t forget his sister being killed for doing nothing wrong, and it’s sad that his parents couldn’t do anything to protect Faye either… :(

What went through Zeke’s mind?? Why did Zeke betray his parents?? I feel bad for Grisha and Dina. >< These two worked hard, to bring power back to Eldia! Their plan of getting the power of the Coordinate out of the walled world, would have been successful, if Zeke agreed to be a chosen Marleyan warrior that would become a titan shifter, and use his ability to take it… Did Zeke get swayed and became loyal to the Marleyans?? I want to know what Zeke’s reasons were…and what his motives are now. Earlier in this volume (21), in chapter 83, Zeke did tell Eren that Grisha brainwashed the youngster, and that he would “come to save [Eren].” I wonder what Zeke meant, when he said that he and Eren were victims of Grisha?? I also didn’t expect Zeke to be Eren’s half-brother, since they don’t look alike. Zeke does look like Grisha, which is why I thought Grisha was the Beast Titan at first glance, when Zeke came out of his titan form… But I truly didn’t expect Eren and Zeke to be related. Isayama made Eren look like his mother, Carla, completely, which gave me more reason to not consider this possibility…

I wonder if there’s more to Eldia, that we’ll learn about eventually… The Eldians’ ancestor, Ymir Fritz’s titan power was put to good use, since she “cultivated the wastes, built the roads, and erected bridges to span the mountains.” By enriching the people and developing the continent, she did good deeds. <- …But is any of this accurate? Grisha interpreted this information based on the images in the historical documents, not that he was actually taught how to read the historical text. What if all of this is just Grisha’s assumption, even though he insisted “Isn’t it obvious from looking?”

This was an excellent chapter. 5/5

Two questions: Why did the 145th Eldian King decided to not fight back the Marleyans and retreated with his people to Paradis? Was it merely because they were losing the civil war? And the other question is, why did he decide to abandon some Eldians back in the continent? Or did every Eldian who was left back decide for themself to stay in the continent? We know some Eldians decided to stay and not flee with the King to Paradis (Grisha's first wife claimed to be the last descendant of them), but could it be that ALL Eldians who were left in the continent were left because they REFUSED to go to Paradis. If so, why did they refuse to flee with the King when they were losing the war? Did they believe they could defeat the Marlyeans? Did they have a secret weapon? Did they know something that the Eldians who fled didn't know?

Grisha's father tells Grisha that the Eldians who fled to Paradis ABANDONED some Eldians in the continent, but, later on, Dina appears and tells Grisha and the Restorationists that among the Eldians that were left behind in the continent, some DECIDED to stay there a fight. But not only that, among those who decided to not flee with the King were members of the Royal Family itself!

My head hurts. I have to reread this.

I noticed two things:
- This chapter shares the same title with chapter 2, "That Day".
- Some of the pictures from the history book are used in Season 2's ending sequence.

So this entire time Marley has been punishing people by turning them into titans and sending them to the island? Those motherfuckers.
"At some point, I stopped hoping."

This chapter was mindblowing.

Zeke is Grisha's son and half brother of Eren. WTH

There was a war between the nations for the control of the titans, and looks like the King Fritz, who was the Founder Titan, fled to an island with his subjects to live in peace.

The problem is that Marley and Eldia are counting two diffent stories about what happened in the past. Who is the real villain?

And where I thought that I couldn't hate Zeke anymore...
Man, listen to them tear into me. Good thing I'm used to it.

After 8 years of putting this on hold, I'm finally making some progress.
It's nice not to have to wait for the next chapter.

So as expected, there were other nations outside the walls, but now we get the full scope, and it's pretty great.

Overall this chapter is a lot more interesting than the lackluster Uprising Arc, and it's shaping up to be as great as the first two.
