If you buy manga is it just to support the author or do you re read it?

I've never heard of someone who buys books that they can't read

No... it's better to buy it English or whatever language you can and enjoy it.

what I mean is it worth it to you just for collection purposes/supporting the author.

Well, when I was in Japan last month I bought most of the Monogatari series and ReLife manga. Besides the fact that I want to collect it, I'm taking Japanese in my university so I plan on eventually learning to read it.

Tldr: It depends on many circumstances.

You're answering your question.
It's mainly for supporting mangaka or for collection. Thus it's "worth it" in that perspective.
Some can also buy it in the expectation of learning Japanese later, like said by Brandon-san.

Personally, I wonder since quite some time about buying some manga from the Forty-Niners (I'm fan of them), especially the less well known members. Since I'm pretty certain to never see them in either English or French (languages that I know), even as scanlation.

Plus yeah, when I have some motivation, I try learning Japanese, so it will helps.

And even if I can't read them, the art alone should be nice.

I buy stuff I really loved so the idea is to be able to share and reread them. I can't always say I reread everything but I will for a lot of series. Or some series once I start buying it I drop the scans, depends on how I feel.

No, if you can't read it, then there's no point. Isn't buying merchandise the same thing though? If it's from a legit production line that sponsors the author, I would assume it would be the same thing as buying their manga.

I haven't bought any in Japanese but I have bought a few volumes in French, German, and Italian so that I could translate them myself in the near future. I had started reading several series that were being scanlated but were dropped partway and this was the only way I could finish them.

if you've already read it and are a big fan then yes, I suppose it can be a collectible of sorts.

I buy Japanese manga/LNs and to read it. But I have a friend who can't read Japanese at all but she has bought each and every volume of the manga as well as LNs and even extras and booklets for her collection as well as to support the author because the series is not available in English.

Well, if there is no official translation then you can buy the book in japaneese in order to support the creator and read the fan translation on the internet

Personally I can't. I bought the edition of Chihayafuru for English learners though since that's the closest we'll ever get to having the manga in English.

For the art. Sounds like a lame reason but there's something satisfying about seeing it in a physical edition, assuming there's no translated version available.

Not really, no. I do have a random volume of Black Jack in Japanese, but it was also $1.

Artbooks on the other hand, yes, I buy those. They usually have some small amount of stuff I can't read, but enough is usually art that we're good.

Yes, I would. It might be stupid of me to purchase a manga that I cannot even read. But I would be more than thrilled to have a non-translated manga of my favourite. Since I take aesthetic and the importance of art into account, I would happily buy it even it means that I can't read it. Specifically doujins, because you can't get those things officially published in English at all.

Actually mangas aren't that hard to read, so if you know a little japanese it't ok. If you don't well...no

I'm assuming you're saying that because of the furigana, but well, I wouldn't exactly say that. For most shonens that might be true because they have furigana that helps begginers a LOT, but often Seinen and Djosei won't have them since they're assuming the reader is mature, thus more knowledgeable in Kanji reading. (Outside of stupids/scientifics words no one uses or strange words made for in-world purpose. Oh and of course, they will usualy write the characters/places name a coupe of times.)

For me, I have a pretty huge library of japanese mangas, but I can read them without much trouble when I take time to, and a bunch of LNs that takes a much longer time, since I'm not exactly fluent enough to read them on my own and they don't have furigana, making some complexe kanji takes more time to read/translate when I'm not used to seeing them. It's pretty fun to learn new words every now and then will reading stuf I enjoy ^^

My brother in law is a huge SAO fan, and has bought many of the Japanese-printed only SAO manga that have never been released in English. He doesn't understand much Japanese, but wanted them to be apart of his collection to support the series' creator and to just have for collector's sake.

I'm the same, I'll buy an anime or manga in Japanese for the sole purpose of owning it. I own many of the R2 Sailor Moon DVD's from CDJapan that are Japanese-RAW.

Yes. If I read it online or watched the anime. I will buy it even if I can't read it -just so I can add it in my collection and support the manga artist.
