I enjoyed Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, Death Note and Psycho Pass. I loved Lain and Psycho Pass I think I watched Psycho Pass seasons 1 & 2 and Psycho Pass "The Movie" in 1 sitting. I thought Ghost in the Shell was amazing but I have not had the time or money to buy the rest of Ghost in the Shell movies/series.

I do like "fantasy" settings as Feudal Japan or Medieval Euorpe etc. However I prefer a more realistic anime even if that anime world is totally different from the real world. As long as it seems plausible Science Fiction instead of to Science Fantasy.

On my to watch list are:

Ergo Proxy (I've only seen it recs on here no idea what it's about but I've pre-ordered the Blu-Rays)
Akria
Monster (Can't find a DVD of this anywhere.)

That's it for what I know I'm looking for any recommendations welcome. I don't mind gore or violence but don't go out of my way to find it. I think if you get too much of that it makes it rather childish same goes with nudity. This of course is just my personal opinion and should not be taken as a slight.

Haibane Renmei (supernatural but not the main gist)
Welcome to the NHK

Perfect Blue
Mawaru Penguindrum (some supernatural tidbits but mostly grounded)
Shinsekai Yori (a bit more fantasy, but deals with humanitarian themes)

Gasaraki deals with some very interesting historical, philosophical and political themes and not enough people know about it.

I'd say Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor since you liked Death Note and they have similar aspects.
